Tonium Pacemaker unboxing and hands-on
So we just got one of the first Tonium Pacemaker portable DJ rigs to land in the States, and while we anticipate having plenty to say about this trick little device, we thought we'd quickly share some pics with you, since it's seriously one of the best and most fun unboxings we've ever done. Each cable is individually packaged in tissue paper inside its own box, and the flaps all have different little fortunes printed on them, from "Your future is looking sound" to our personal favorite "Listen to your mother." As for the Pacemaker itself, it's been pretty fun to mess around with in the few minutes we've had, but we've got to get some more tracks loaded up before we can say anything meaningful. Stay tuned!

Didn't the main guy from LCD Sound System have a hand in making this thing?
God, why does EVERYONE have to make their device look like an iPhone!!! Isn't anyone original???
wait. wrong thread.
strange accustoms?
I thought the exact same thing. To be fair, they are based in Sweden.
Surprised you didn't point out the "Your move will music the world"
I seriously though that Engadget was starting to review actual pacemakers for a minute there...
So did I. In fact, I still have no idea what this product actually does--the article spends all its time talking about packaging.
They talk about it in detail in this post.

my comment is no comment
i think this thing has potential. i wouldnt want to see someone DJ'ing a paid party with this but i enjoy mixing it up when it comes to a good ole' fashion hotel party or a good late night hang.
Recession antidote, please.
word
I would just say give it to aaron for this obvious comment. But if not then give it to me for being nice and nominating him for getting it!
Are your offices really dusty?
DSLR macro makes everything look dusty because every single speck of dust shows up.
I thought it has been in the states for around over a year. I have a friend here in the states that got one at least a year ago.
@pistolpete
+1 First thing that jumped out at me, too. I like the design & packaging, but the 'wit' was lost the moment Engrish stepped into the room.
Unboxing pics...just pictures of it being taken out of the box....really? that has to be one of the nerdiest things i've ever heard of...
You must be new here. Don't worry, we're quite nice, except when we're not.
Nilay, are you promoting your own band? =P.
"...one of the first..." in the US??? I purchased my serialized unit in the 200 numbers, a year ago. The device was covered by Wired months before it's release as well.
It's a neat device. It takes a lot of time to get used to the power and functionality. I like the idea, but still think it needs a few generations to get it right. That being said, I would highly recommend it to any gadget freak like me who want the coolest toys...this one is high on the list.
Ha! I've got you by 99... Mine was 101, and uhhh yeah... had it for like a year... C'mon Engadet it was all over the mens mags (Stuff, FHM etc..) as a must have gadget item 12 months ago.
Wow! Does mine come covered in dust / debris too! Awesome!
As a Dj for over 10 years i've had my eye on this thing... not so much to dj gigs... my technics and SSL take care of that... but to use instead of the Ipod/touch... for down time i can get down on the virtual ones and two's... or even if i show up to a party and there is no music i could get down...
I think like Eric says... it will be a generation or two to work a few things out... and bring the price way down... atleast to about $200 (wishful thinking).
I have yet to see any real hiphop dj's handle this thing yet (i understand it more as a house/trance gadget).
Engadget, please can we have live unboxings? It seems a bit stale when the product is already unboxed when the post goes live. These post-unboxing unboxing posts are so 2008. And a webcam of your letterbox would be nice.
Thank you.
I spy a Numark M3 Mixer in pic 17. I've got one of those!
Back on topic, I really like the Pacemaker concept and all, would loooove to try it and would be pretty cool at home parties and all.
By the way... Unless you just couldn't get it on film so you skipped it, try holding the black tissue paper that everything is wrapped in up to a bright light. There is a surprise watermark in the paper awaiting you. Think goat (not goatse)
The folks over at thereviewcrew.com reviewed the Pacemaker last month. Apparently it's not too bad.
I love my 120GB original Pacemaker. I wouldn't really play a paying gig with it, but maybe a small picnic or beach get together with friends. But it's awesome when traveling, melts away long flights and ferry trips. The new firmware is really nice, it really makes it a finished product.
