ASUS' Eee PC 1002HAE: a faster 1002HA dressed in Eluminum
When you think Eee PC, or netbooks in general, the usual image that comes to mind is thick slab of white plastic. That's certainly true of the Eee PC 1002HA. However, drop the letter "E" into the model number and you've got ASUS' new Eee PC 1002HAE dressed in a swank aluminum skin and 1.6GHz N280 processor within. While the rest of the specs remain unchanged -- 802.11b/g/n, 1GB of memory and 160GB disk, 1.3 megapixel webcam, memory card slot, 3.8-hour Li-Polymer battery, and 10-inch 1,024 x 600 pixel LED backlit display -- the new shell drops the weight from 1.45kg to 1.2kg for a savings of about half a pound. At the moment, this model is either Japanese-only or at least a Japanese-first (unusual for ASUS) with a May 16th launch for the tax inclusive price of ¥49,800 (about $506).

I bet Engadget was tempted to use Eeeliminum but felt like it would be corny.
Engadget fears not the corn.
A shame it doesn't run OSX, I'd rather save the money and spend a little more for a Macbook Air.
troll troll trolly, troll troll trolly, troll troll trolly, troooooooolly, trolly!
Four times the price isn't "a little more" you embittered tool.
Oh comon im a total Mac fan, im typing this from an iMac but even i think your a tool.
I bought a Dell Mini because i wasnt going to pay $1649 (Aus dollars) for a Macbook to view websites. Im very happy with my decision.
Apple need to hurry and fill the hole in their lineup. Im aware it would encroach on Macbook sales but a tablet like device wouldnt.
The Macbook Air is built and looks nice, but come one. I will not pay $2000 for a laptop without firewire, without an Expresscard slot, without eSATA, without Ethernet (builtin), Without a removable battery, etc.
Sony, Panasonic, and Toshiba have made it clear it is possible to make an ultraportable that is very thin and light with an expresscard 34 slot, a 4-pin firewire and/or an eSATA/USB combo port, 2 or more dedicated USB slots AND an extended life battery.
The naming was far out of hand wayyyyy back, now its just horrific. Call them different names, these lettering to tell them apart is only killing your business model
I'll care when they make one with a higher res screen.
i would buy this if it had ion
I LUV the red one. I have a skin on my current eee 1000he, but I have been looking for something sleek and aluminum looking. Is the red to bright for a guy? I'd love to get a skin like that!
A regular guy? Yes, too bright...
A flaming homo? No..

In my opinion the blue and black are more manly, however, if you were to stick a Ferrari logo on it it would trump the other ones in manliness. Acer did it.
I don't get the difference between the 1002ha and the 1002hae...color?
Did you not even read the headline? If you did, you'd know it's faster and it's dressed in eluminum (or eluminium to those in the UK).
(If you read the article, as well, you'd realize the "Eluminum" bit in the headline was facetious (to explain the added E in the model designation) and that it's really faster and dressed in aluminum.)
Matt: if you can find a lower end or refurbished Sony Vaio Z, it might be something you like. Core 2 Duo, 9300m/4500HD switchable, 13" but 3.4lbs with 6 hour battery life. If you check on ebay or froogle, sometimes you see the lower end models (which still kick ass) for around $1200-1300.
Does anyone agree with me that instead of netbooks, we need a decent compromise between cheap netbooks and expensive ultraportables ?
Intel's cheaper low-voltage CULV chips will probably help, but even those are overkill. I would love to have a thin and lightweight laptop that doesn't kill the budget. God knows a Sony TT would be great, but I'm not going to spend $2500-3500 for one.
Whoever can make a nicely designed laptop thats 1" thin and weighs less than 3.5lbs with a standard battery with the following specs or better gets my money:
1) Dual-core Intel Celeron ULV *or* Core 2 CULV *or* dual-core AMD Athlon/NEO low-voltage
2) 11-12" LED backlit display with 1440x900 resolution or similar (must be decent quality)
3) Nvidia 9400M chipset
4) 64GB or 80GB SSD
5) $1200 or less
why not just go 1 whopping inch more and get a macbook or a dell studio xps 13?
I mean I sit on my back porch all the time smoking a cig and surfing the net, holding the macbook with one hand. 4.5 lbs isnt that freaking heavy......at all.
I say
Iphone/G1/Pre or whatever
+
macbook, or netbook or whatever.
+
A good solid phenom II 720 or intel quad desktop (if you need it) with a 23'' display.
That should take care of you plenty, what is with this need for a iphone + a 10inch snazy laptop + a desktop.........lame get something cheap, or get something expensive, quit complaining about 1-2lbs or 1 more inch screen resolution.
I agree. A 10" Atom based netbook just can't capably handle most of the things I want out of a portable computer (basic web browsing and word processing, yes, but such a machine would choke on HD video, light 3D gaming, or Lightroom, and the lack of full sized keyboards is still a major drawback for me). As for johnthezombie's suggestion of just going to a 13" Macbook, I find the difference between a 5lb Macbook and a 3lb ultraportable significant, especially when that weight is primarily going to an unnecessary disk drive and screen space (and the battery to power them) that I don't really want or need. My ideal machine would look something like the following:
-11" 1366x768 screen
-Full size keyboard
-9400M quality gpu
-Weight under 3.5lbs
-4-5 hr battery life
-Price under $1200
I believe the MacBook Air is 3 lbs.
Those are some pretty warped looking keys...
Engadget: What part of the 1002ha is a thick slab of white plastic?
The author is pointing towards older EEEs, I reckon. They used to come in pure white colors
This ain't going to matter to anyone living outside of Japan, but the shift key has been put in the right place for the first time on an Eee PC model in Japan, plus it looks like an old-skool keyboard.
ASUS EEE 1002HA has been upgraded and it is now named as EEE 1002H. Perhaps that model is not available in Japan. To read review about EEE 1002HA, visit the following link:

Wow, I reaaaaally like that dark blue-grey lid... or whatever color it is...
I wish they'd change the mouse button though..
Engadget, the original model 1002ha was never a slab of white, it was/is aluminum on the outside, very classy looking... the big difference between that and this new model seems to be the n280 instead of the n270, and the keyboard on this model looks like the chicklet style keyboard that they introduced recently with the 1000he model.
C'mon... How much longer do I have to wait to buy the T91...
is it really worth an extra 200 bucks for aluminum???
I guess 1002HA^2 didn't work out :\
