Dell's $299 Mini 10v netbook spotted, SSD options added
Looks like the first iteration of the Mini 10 evolution is getting ready for retail. The Mini 10v (aka, "Bear" or model 1011) has just made it's first appearance in Dell's May catalog with "mid-May" anticipated availability. The 10v swaps out the Z-series Atom for the netbook standard N270 while remaining true to its 120GB disk, 1GB memory, XP, and 1.3 megapixel webcam origins. The big news here is price: the Mini 10v costs $100 less than the base Mini 10. Also spotted on Dell's retail site are new 32GB or 64GB SSD options for the current Mini 10 for an extra $75 or $125, respectively. Sorry kids, no Android option yet (which might not be a bad thing). SSD screengrab after the break.
[Thanks, Willy N.]
Update: The Mini 10 can now be ordered with Ubuntu, hooray!

like the 64GB SSD option.
mitt @ May 7th 2009 6:32AM
please dell give us an ubuntu 9.04 option!
vvnraman @ May 7th 2009 7:18AM
Even if Dell wants to give the netbooks with Ubuntu installed, they can't advertise about it. This is because of a licensing deal they have with Microsoft. And also they can't offer a system without any OS becasue of the same licensing deal.

But all is not lost. If they do have an option for Ubuntu and the customer requests them explicitly, then they provide Ubuntu with the system.
dc @ May 7th 2009 10:45AM
Dell now has them with Ubuntu. Go to their site.
Adderz @ May 7th 2009 6:43AM
its nice to see theyve replaced the Z530 with teh N270, its been shown that the Z530 performs worse despite the same specs.
Heres to hoping it comes standard with a 6 cell battery and non soldered ram.
If so we might just have one of the best netbooks.

Depending on your use, doesn't the gma 500 take up some of the slack(vs. the 950 you get with the n270)?
andrew autopsy @ May 7th 2009 8:37AM
Yes, but the 500 has terrible drivers and for most people, its probably not even worth it. The GMA500 is the reason why Ubuntu wasn't available on the mini 10/12. Maybe this will change things?
bombastinator @ May 7th 2009 6:57AM
How well does it Hackintosh?
Tones Jom @ May 7th 2009 7:14AM
I was wondering the same thing, i.e., if maybe Dell just dumped the Mini 9 guts into a Mini 10. That would be the only way this model could get the Hackintosh treatment.
Joe H @ May 7th 2009 7:52AM
Considering they switched to the N270, it sounds like that's exactly what they did. And honestly that'll probably be a very smart move for them. I'd bet it at least doubles sales, if not more.
therpham @ May 7th 2009 7:58AM
I was considering getting a Mini 9 (actually the Vostro a90) for Hackintosh goodness, but it looks like the price is going to be even more right on this as long as it ends up being as friendly as the 9.
Colonel Panic @ May 7th 2009 9:59PM
To elaborate on what Tones Jom said, the Mini 10 does not have the requisite GMA950 for Hackintoshing, so go with the Mini 9 or Vostro A90 if you want a hackintosh. I do not think the Atom type matters.

Mini 10v + (still not ION) = Fail.
chispito @ May 7th 2009 2:29PM
How can it be a failure for not having a chipset that's not available yet? Have you had some quality hands-on with an Ion netbook?
AVG @ May 7th 2009 3:13PM
@chispito
You new here? Assessments can be made from benchmarks, hardware specifications, and reviews from trusted sources. I don't need to handle every piece of fucking computer gear in the world to form an opinion on which pieces are the superior.
vvnraman @ May 7th 2009 6:59AM
Hey Engadget, how come this is not a breaking news and iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 coming out news is one.
I mean its $100 cheaper.
Whats the crieteria for a post to get a 'Breaking News' tag?
thef1re @ May 7th 2009 9:05AM
it has to be microsoft related. duh!
nizzy1115 @ May 7th 2009 10:33AM
OMG beta number 5...wasn't breaking news on beta 1, 2, 3, and 4 enough for you?
Id rather have this article any day. In fact, i think im going to buy one.
gerrrg @ May 7th 2009 6:59AM
Now that is interesting...needs more RAM though.
Mike @ May 7th 2009 7:00AM
What I like about the Z series is its support of the new virtual XP feature in Windows 7. Although the N's performance might be slightly better, I don't think it makes up for the loss of this option.
Joe H @ May 7th 2009 8:34AM
.... Seriously? Honestly, what programs do you have that don't work in Windows 7 that would warrant needing a VM XP?
I know, there's probably some eclectic business apps or something that some people might need, but it's handled everything I've been throwing at it for the last 6 months.
I really just think people are overstating the value of it. It's not really as necessary as you think.
Jorvay @ May 7th 2009 9:03AM
Totally agree with Joe. Sure there are some cases where custom software solutions will still render the XP virtualization useful, but those products are rare and almost always owned by big businesses who aren't providing their employees with netbooks in the first place. So while XP virtualization is going to be a useful tool for some people and groups, those aren't going to be the same people and groups that will find netbooks useful.

Hey the trackpad is really big. That computer is really a looker.
BigReg @ May 7th 2009 7:43AM
Its not about how BIG the trackpad is, its about how you USE the trackpad!
strider_mt2k @ May 7th 2009 7:33AM
Meh.
The 9 is better.

Yem @ May 7th 2009 8:14AM

Phade @ May 7th 2009 10:19AM
The upgrade is available on the Mini 10: 10.1" HD Widescreen Display (1366x768)
Stereotype @ May 7th 2009 8:28AM
Still waiting for ION....
Lou @ May 7th 2009 8:37AM
Can you hackintosh the 10? I think I remember hearing you couldn't because of the processor and all.
Mike @ May 7th 2009 8:48AM
No hackintosh with the GMA500... also makes linux difficult.. can only use the Ubuntu 8.04 image from the Mini 12.
telepheedian @ May 7th 2009 8:41AM
I'd be all over this if it weren't for the soldered-on ram. Dell's netbooks really haven't impressed me much, but this is pretty close.
Ruffy @ May 7th 2009 10:24AM
$700 for roughly the same specs as the mini 9
Dell's perfect 10 is shaping up to be a major flop
ive9th @ May 7th 2009 11:24AM
Has anybody seen a review of the dell mini 10 with the new screen option or even screen shots of how the screen looks? screen option = 720
roper @ May 7th 2009 12:37PM
I have a Dell Mini 10 with the high rez screen. It is very sharp with good viewing angles. I use it for web surfing and spreadsheets and it is much better for this than the 1024 x 600 screen I have on my MSI Wind. I did have to use slightly larger icons and fonts though. There is nothing wrong with my eyes, but at its native resolution, some things were just a little too small to easily read at my usual visual distance. Bumping up the size a notch took care of it.
chispito @ May 7th 2009 2:35PM
XP looks like crap when you try to scale it up.
Jimbo @ May 7th 2009 12:28PM
Looks like they yanked the SSDs
charlie @ May 7th 2009 12:46PM
its not on the dell site. and the ssd is missing on the mini 10. dell chat says they are updating the site and the 10v will be back "in a couple of days"..... :-(
Lionel M. @ May 7th 2009 3:08PM
The larger SSDs are only options for Mini 10 systems with Ubuntu. More information here on Direct2Dell: http://bit.ly/16qelY.

Wonderful, Dell. Making progress. But uh...
TV tuner?
GPS?
2/4GB RAM (or better yet, user upgradeable RAM?)
WWAN?
WiMAX?
We're waiting for those long-ago announced options to arrive. Any day now would be great!
CallDon @ May 7th 2009 8:44PM
What do you mean "soldered-on ram"??? Can another gb be added?
poached @ May 8th 2009 5:20PM
if they do put a GMA 900 graphics card, I would buy one to replace the mini 9 so I can get the bigger disk (for xcode and others) and better keyboard and higher screen realestate.
