T-Mobile to release "multiple" Android devices this year
It's no secret that T-Mobile has some grand Android-based plans after the million-selling success of the G1, and although we've heard sketchy reports of future devices to come, it sounds like things are starting to firm up: CTO Cole Brodman told GigaOm yesterday that the carrier is planning to launch "multiple" Android devices from "three partners" later this year. One of those is pretty obviously the HTC Magic / Sapphire / myTouch, but that's just the tip of the potential iceberg here -- we've got a feeling that the Samsung I7500 "Houdini" will be involved, the G1 v2 is certainly interesting, there's that mysterious Huawei set we saw at MWC, and hell, we've even got reports of netbooks, tablets, and home phones in the mix. That's a lot of directions Timmy-O can go, any predictions?

Samsung i7500 here I come!
I'll believe it when u see it,overated os.
App store 40000 n counting!
perish.
The thing is with "40,000 apps and counting" why does Android have apps that iPhone still doesn't have. That's what open source allows, iPhone's seems to have 20 copies of each kind of app due to its larger base, and therefore larger amount of developers. Maybe this is just me but I'd rather have tethering, themes, gps nav, alternatives to basic apps, emulaters, widgets, document editing, etc.. rather than 27 versions of a fart app. But again maybe that's just me. With Android expanding to more carriers and having multiple phones, it will also have a bunch of the same applications, but unlike iPhone it will also have those apps I previously mentioned.
I am a G1 owner and am really frustrated with the whole android marketplace thing. The free apps are very good but the paid apps are a definite ripoff. To add insult to injury the search feature for the market place is far from what i would expect of google
I havent found any games for the G1 that can compete graphically with the top notch games for the iphone. I find the games on the iphone to be far more polished and most of them also offer free demos.Doom is great on the G1 due to its hardware keyboard though.
Of course the Productivity tools on android are in a different class and i expect improved versions soon. Most of these excellent tools are very expensive, the marketplce really needs a free tool that can read acrobat files and common MS office files.
I am eagerly waiting for t-mobile to push the cupcake update and hope that it will solve most of androids major deficiencies.
Ignore the trolls guys..
TheGM - the iPhone does have alt browsers, gps nav, and doc editors. Emulators are sorely missing, but I suspect Apple will relax on them soon. Er, "hope", not "suspect", to be accurate.
You can forget about tethering - it is not Apple but the carriers which dislike tethering apps on the iPhone, and although you'll be able to d/l a tethering app, you won't necessarily be able to use it, because the carriers will prevent it from working.
I agree that an open marketplace will have more app types available than a closed one, but I don't think it is going to be as big a difference as you suggest. The iPhones already have some of those apps you imply won't be available; and although emulators, widgets and themes are very important to some consumers, I don't think the wider buying public assesses a lack of them as being a deal-breaker.
Also, anyone who thinks the Android Marketplace won't itself have dozens of fart apps, is kidding themselves to an extraordinary degree.
Apple wont allow emulators on the iPhone. Not only is their the rules about engines that can run code other than those approved by Apple, there is also the fact that most emulators (at least the kind people want like NES, SNES, arcade etc) are largely used for running copyright violating copies of their games (even if you happen to have a copy of Mario Bros sitting in a closet somewhere, that still doesn't mean its legal to download a copy from the Internet, if you dump it yourself from your own cart it MAY be legal depending on which country you live in)
Good stuff. Hardware manufacturers have always had excellent hardware, but very pitiful software support in their handsets. Google Android has definitely raised the bar for what a consumer should get out of their mobile phone experience.
Android seriously needs to spread out more. It needs diversity in order to sell more. Aside from that, I seriously think the G1 v2 is some how a motorola phone. Just look at the three buttons on the front and compare them to the buttons on Rival A455 and the iden QWERTY phone they have. There's no brand logo on it, so the possibilty is not low.
Here's the evidence for those too lazy too to bother searching. Yes, I know its a cheap MSPaint picture, but it does prove a point.

hey! you're onto something...

instead of calling it the G1 G2 etc. they should just call it THE T-DROID
If android is a developers dream y is it that they are so underdeveloped with a handful of apps.how is it iPhone closed source has 40,000 apps ,?
Is closed source better?
So what u doing more for the people as far as apps iPhone 40000 or android?
Could you type that in english please?
I realy hate peapole who missinterprets the concept of opensource so incredibly badly on purpouse.
Opensource has nothing and will never have anything to do with how "better" something is to write applications for. That is a matter of API's, not source licencing. But ofcource something entirery open has a head start in this concern since API's have to be open to. But something open is only that, open. A API for a closedsource application may still be better than the API for the open application. However you may improve the open application and its API if you wish, something that is impossible with a closed application.
And there are less than 2 million android users out there in a few places on earth. How many iPhone users are there out there globaly?
@ mvp
He clearly typed it from an iPhone.
aww its cute how its a bad english iphone fanboy vs. a bad english open OS/android person.
I would prefer a couple of exceptionally designed android devices with good software support over a large number of devices.
The android platform needs a kick in its pants as the new applications are not that exciting anymore.
It seems they are playing the "devices" means anything that runs on electricity game.
Since Android can't support any resolution above Half-VGA, it's always going to be fail for me.
I have good vision and I can easily make out the pixels in QVGA or HVGA phones, plus I web browse on my phone so if I were to use an HVGA phone for that I would need to zoom in and then side scroll around to be able to read the text .. on a WVGA phone I don't need to do that nearly as often since the full web page displays readably when I hold the phone a foot or two away.
If Android is open source why cant they change it to support a higher res?
Android is great.
I just need Cupcake.
I hope at least one of these multiple Androids is a Tegra with a physical qwerty keypad...
I love my G1, and the few apps that I use don't run on an iPhone and are the best apps out there in my opinion.
T-Mobile is ass though, and I terminated my 2 year agreement with them after only 2 months. I HAPPILY paid $200 to terminate my contract with T-Mobile. My customer service experience with them sent me running.
In fact since then I have considered buying a Zoombak, but decided not to since T-Mobile handles the data side of the contract...
what are you talking about? t-mobile is by far have the best customer service in the wireless industry...well, at least here in the USA
anything with android and querty keypad
One word. Motorola
I just hope they're not stupid enough to call it the G1 v2
highly agree, its a real easy way to confuse the crap out of people.
Domo arigato, Mr Robotto!
Android is practically brand new with 1.5 now. You will see a major Android surge in the market in 09. I don't think anything can match the Apple media juggernaut but Android will still do well. I love my iPhone a ton, that being said, GURU is still a tool.
You have to refer to it as _ndroid because of the legal battle over the name ;)
I was expecting a better image from engadget
maybe like the grey boxes on the sides of the T lined up to the eyes of the android
Have to love the predicament about 85 million of us Verizon users find ourselves in...
1) Anything Android will be exclusive to T-Mobile AKA check out our non-existent 3G network
2) Palm Pre is exclusive to the sinking Sprint-tanic
3) iPhone is exclusive to AT&T AKA we don't have coverage in half of your state
All of Verizon's smartphones are last years trash except for the "Storm" ---- which, don't even get me started on that POS. Really the only thing to look forward to in a small way is the Blackberry 96xx Niagara, which is basically called Verizon-gets-the-bold-a-year-later...
Lol thats what you get for having such a big-ass country! :D
Android isn't exclusive to T-Mobile, maybe the HTC G line but not the Android OS. Verizon actually had a listing for Android Platform expert, just a couple weeks ago.

off the subject a little bit, i just got my cupcake update 1.5 and is great, i mean it changed alot and it looks more professional now, like a smartphone should look like. the virtual keyboard is great and easy to type with, the recording is great, the browser seems to be faster, some added widgets, youtube upload with an account and uhhm yeah from everything good theres something bad, you lose you IM,Amazon, and my Faves icons, it might be because t-mobile hasnt updated it with their system or something idk. other than that is great!!!
Uhhm Cupcake with sprinkles!!! lol
Sorry for the misspelled and i live CT US anyone else with the cupcake here???
how's the battery life now?
so will cupcake kill iPhone ?
Is this androids last secret weapon of hope?
Will it revolutionize or innovate?
Should I get rid of my 4 iPhones anytime soon?
Overhyped or underhyped?
Has this os amazed or fallen short?
It seems like the battery improved alot, theres also more battery options, now you can force close a running app!! from applications in settings, and there's a background data usage, you need to use it if you gonna use the Market, but if not you will have more battery life
sony ericsson will come out with an Android phone, maybe this year.
I have evidence they are working on it right now.
