Yep, it looks like Verizon's
subsidized HP Mini 1000 will indeed
launch on May 17th -- and if these leaked screenshots are any indication, launch pricing will be set at $199 after a $50 rebate two-year contract and $299 after rebate for a one-year commitment. (The prices are marked "at launch ONLY" so we're guessing they'll go up sometime after.) As for specs, it's nothing special, just a 80GB Atom machine with 1GB of RAM and a WWAN card, so really, we'd much rather take the subsidy on a USB 3G stick and spread the mobile broadband love to all our machines than be stuck with an underpowered netbook, but hey -- it's your call. One more pic after the break.
why do people take pictures of their screens as opposed to taking a screen shot?
easier to take a photo with a cell phone than loading software and taking the risk of being caught.
because they aren't supposed to be sharing that information?
I CAN HAZ PrtScr?
got paint?
I find it funny when they point stuff like Windows Media Player in the Hardware list...
With those base model specs (3 cell still!?), this netbook is worth
at most fifty bucks more than the "subsidized" price. And with a 3
cell, what use is "mobile" internet gonna be if the battery's gonna
die immediately after connecting?
I don't like this subsidy crap at all.
THE WHOLE POINT OF A NETBOOK WAS TO BE CHEAP AND RUN INTERNET/EMAIL AND OFFICE. WE DO THIS UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED TO BE CONNECTED 24/7.
YOU GET ONE NOW FOR ABOUT $200 WITH LINUX!
Seriously if I want a contact I will get a phone.
I don't trust Verizon. They're evil. They scare me, just like AT&T.
another epic fail by vzw...
Huh? Paying $200 for a provider locked netbook? Subsidized stuff are supposed to be cheap. Free, $10, $50, something like that. $200? Talk about profit margins.
i asked a verizon customer service rep about this and they were all hush hush about it said they couldnt discuss it haha
Aren't these things like $300 anyway?
You mean, people would actually buy a 10" netbook for $520, making the $199 price a bargain? I must clearly be living in my own reality, where such price for a teeny screen would normally be called DUMB.
It is definitely an alternate reality. The NetBook concept is currently sweeping through my company. To me, they are an interesting idea for those who travel a lot and have no room or need for a full useful computer. For the average user, something that small only means that the keyboard is hard to use (fat fingered me), the screen will always be a little or a lot too small to view that web page (scroll hell), and once you add all the protection software that you need for indiscrimient surfing, I would be curious to know how the Atom processor keeps up. Everytime someone pushes a NetBook here, I push back with some reliable online source that has a decent, Toshiba, HP, Dell, Gateway, ..., laptop that far exceeds the mini netbook in features for close or less than the price; it's just 4-6 inches bigger and twice+ the weight (2.2 vs 5.5 lbs). Of course, 5-7 horus of battery life (6 cell units) is tempting if all you want to do is surf wirelessly on the desk sipping (gulping) a beer(s). Currently that was NewEgg with a dual core 2GB Gateway for $399. Yes, mini's sell for under $300, but that's usually 512MB and the lower end processor (1.0 or 1.2 Ghz) and not the one they tried at the store with 1.6 Ghz and 1 or 2GB. Ok, off my soapbox.
Either way, if you've loads of free cash, travel, or need long cableless web browsing, add a mini to your collection!
