Ready for another round of Microsoft's Laptop Hunters? This time it's Lauren -- not the infamous original LH -- and mom seeking the perfect PC to take with her to law school. Top on the list of needs is a portable with speed and battery life, all for less than $1700. Shying away from the more expensive MacBook Pro -- a pretty tame jab, much like the last ad -- the dynamic duo settle on a Dell XPS 13a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and a $899 price tag. All in all, not the most exciting commercial the series has fostered, and with Apple finally going on the offensive, we really hope the gang in Redmond take it up a notch. See the relatively bite-free video for yourself after the break.
Update: Looks like Microsoft's pulled the video, probably due to some audio sync issues -- can we get Sheila on the case? We'll let you know when it springs back up.
Why waste your money on a laptop that uses 1/2 to 3/4 of its resource on the functioning of the OS? I wouldn't buy another pre-manufactured PC until Windows 7 hits the market. Vista is the next gen Windows ME. I would rather spend the extra money and buy a Mac before I buy a PC or laptop with Vista on it.
what a ditz... "i want it to do programs fast" and she liked the pink machine what's wrong with a high-end macbook? interestingly... this was a dell... did Round Rock finally get tired of HP getting the limelight?
Really?! ...We are still talking about a commercial!? Dude, it is a commercial. You know the things you see on TV to promote companies and their products. I could be wrong, but they usually to show the company/product in its best possible light and don't normally focus on any negatives of their own product.
In the big picture, I think the Microsoft ad guys win big time. WHY, because there are over 200 comments on this post.
Good luck in Law school Lauren. Glad to know you purchased a $1,000 item without doing any research beforehand. You're going to go far in a field that is basically nothing but reseach.
It's okay because they'll just send The Geek Squad over . Honestly, if you have a problem with your computer, would you rather have a Genius helping you or a Geek ?
If I were entering school right now, I wouldn't drop a grand on a notebook. I would just get a netbook, and just replace it as it breaks or as specs naturally get better. For academics, you can get just as much work done on a netbook as you can with a Dell XPS or a Macbook. Spending more than $400 to type legal briefs just doesn't make sense. The exceptions would be buying a tablet PC for note taking, or buying a more powerful PC for a specialized field.
The average student doesn't need that much power to update her Facebook page.
Depends on how much scholarship money I was given... If I had a 2000$ laptop stipend, I'd go and find the best thing that money can buy.
Oh, and to the people who don't understand... the commercial is about people spending *their own* money but in the end the group gives them back the money if they buy a PC as a surprise. And then the people MS hired to make these commercials turns it into a commercial and MS airs it.
I would, without any doubt, buy a Dell XPS laptop over any Apple laptop. The advertisement is right on the money. Truth in advertising is surprisingly satisfying.
OK, enough, I've never said anything about this ads, I simply ignore them, but this is just ridiculous. So she needs a laptop that is PORTABLE, and has a long battery life.... for less than, wait for it.... $1700!! the most amazing part is when she passes by the 13,3" macbooks (portable, IMHO, even somehow powerful enough with 2,0-2,66 core2duo), to put her eyes on a $2000 macbook pro 15,4" and say "uuuh, expensive!"?
And finally lands on a dell? A DELL? Seriously? at least, make it credible.
Some dell laptops are OK for a cheap computer, but, come on, looking for a $1700 machine and she ends up buying THAT?
I can understand there are better laptops than macbooks for a lower price, in fact when I change my old trusty laptop, I'll go for an Acer timeline, or even an HP DV5, but this ad? It's even more stupid than the "Hi, I'm a MAC" counterparts.
They need to do follow up commercials later they will go something like this.
My laptop stopped charging so I called the support line which is based in India. I talked to a tech named Sally. They said it was out of warranty so they told me to send it in and wait 4 weeks and they will tell me how much it will cost to fix it.

It runs extremely slow now nothing like when it was new. I have defragged it and added more RAM but it is still slow.
Microsoft puts content DRM support in their code - the code is a failure. Apple has content protection in their code - it is there to allow more people to download meida they want."
Nice try, dipstick. Apple put DRM at the expressed wishes of the labels whose products they want to sell.
Microsoft deliberately puts DRM into everything they try to whore themselves to every content provider and RIAA/MPAA wannabe that desires to strip away your rights as a consumer.
And wake up. It's 2009 and Apple removed the music DRM the very first chance they got. So your sad argument falls flat on it's ass.

Yes. a 17 year old girl is who I go to for computer buying advice...
I'll stick to my (oh my god is so overpriced) mac... I like my computer to actually work.
Funny thing is, I have never known a 17 year old girl to go to law school. You have to have a Bachelor's degree to go to law school in the U.S. .... Thus, she should, typically, be at least 20. Unless she was a massive over-achiever ....
Ok this "commercial" or propaganda demonstrates the following:
1. that Microsoft is the monopoly in the market 2. the dumb blonde didn't consider the base Macbook/aluminum Macbook and decided to compare the Macbook Pro instead 3. all that power in the Dell doesn't matter anyways because the performance is going to be slowed down by Vista 4. she needs mom to choose a computer for her?
There is so many things wrong with this commercial. Microsoft is truly taking advantage of consumer stupidity.
i find it funny how macs are more for the hardware (if there the same spec) and that osx cant run all the apps most people want. yes macs are good but there good because there not common. if other company's made pc's with osx then macs would get cheaper. if more people had osx there will be more supported software. and nobody buys a mac to only run windows that would be stupid. and dell, hp, gateway, etc. is not Microsoft. so if you buy a dell and it sucks why did you buy the dell. if you spend $600 and your pc runs slow and you wonder why your friends $1500 mac isn't then you should have spent more on a longerlasting pc. and if your mad at virus and stuff infecting your pc then we all should by macs so virus, spyware, etc makers will make there crap for macs. if over 80% of people have pc then why would people hack osx, thats why its so secure because theres nobody to be protected.
i use windows because i need it and i build my own pc so i know whats in it and its quality.
My daughter just started college. About six months ago she got the next model down of what Lauren bought for just over $700 [with her own money]. It's been great (and, annoyingly enough, faster than my three-year-old "kick ass" system in all but graphics.) (My daughter got it at Best Buy for less and with more memory than if she'd bought it straight from Dell. And yes, she looked at Macs, but hated them. Didn't like the HP or Acer systems either.)
I thought that Lauren was so hot, but now that I know she wants to be a lawyer, you know that she is going to be an evil c*nt. Does anyone know a female lawyer, who isn't a male-hating bitch? I know a lot of great females, but it seems that those who are attracted to law, are all man-hating c*nts. Gloria Allred; anyone on CNN or HLN etc.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

I must say, it sounds like a lot of you are ready to take a bullet for Bill Gates.
Haha, oh wow, that has better specs than the $1599 plastic macbook(lol build quality) and $1999 macbook pro(minus the 9600mGT).
Mac users sure got marked up, that must be part of the "Apple experience".
"I want it to do programs fast."
She'll be calling Best Buy in a few days asking why the internet is down.

...A DELL? WTH?, Microsoft, WTH?
She spent only $900, which is a big point of the ad.
As stated below, my daughter has the "little brother" of that laptop--it's pretty damn good.

If Microsoft is gonna give you $1700 to spend, shit...why not go all out?

Get a mac, you won't regret it.
She also budgeted $900 for an mp3 player, but scored a Zune for $250. Sorta makes it seem like she didn't do any research before she went to Best Buy.
Cause Microsoft did the research for them already.
They forgot to mention the MacBook... stupid people.

Hi, I figured out that you can find hot laptop bargains at http://www.techbargains.com as well as at http://www.hotdeel.com. Check it out!
Wait did they say a large screen AND a long battery life? That's not gonna happen. But good try laptop hunters.
With all that said... at least Lauren is hot!
