Wild and slim PS3 redesign caught on camera?
Not that the original was any sort of tame, but some new, incredibly grainy leaked shots of a PS3 "slim," if they prove legitimate, point to a pretty wild redesign in store for the console in the near future -- not to mention what would be one of the smallest Blu-ray devices we've seen yet. There seem to be a lot of similarities to the Slimline PS2, while still holding onto that curvature the PS3 is so well known for, and even squeezing in a slot-loading disc drive and 120GB hard drive. Of course, Sony has issued a pretty strong denial of existing PS3 slim rumors, stating that "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3 at this time," but that's a pretty common way for Sony to deal with rumors, no matter which way they fall. We'll probably have to wait until E3 to learn the real truth, but it's a good bet this won't be the last true or false rumor to hit about a real or fake console in the run-up to the show. At least this one's packing pictures.

Great.... that's exactly what the people wanted from Sony.
Of all comments, suggestions, and demands, I am yet to see one single remark demanding a "slimmer PS3" from Sony. But it's not like there is a shortage of demands, au contraire.
To be fair to Sony, they've actually dealt with nearly all the original complaints about the PS3. I'm extremely pleased with the progress I've seen in the 2 years I've owned mine.
I'm guessing it might be cheaper since it seems it would end up cutting down on raw materials... this might accompany a price drop.. if it does.. i think we'll see a huge boost in sales. Double whammy.
This is sooooo good to be true ._.
Like hmf said, slimmer means it's cheaper to make and so it will be cheaper to sell....they said they're going to 45nm chips this year so I reckon this is real.
Reducing the price though is up to Sony of course.
Yes, they have to slam Tegra in there to make it rock!
Yes, of course, slimmer design means cheaper to make... NOT! Think about it... I have a pretty nice 15.4" laptop at the moment... if I want the same specs in a smaller, slimmer laptop - almost 3x the price!
It's just what I want... I never bought a PS3 and it was mainly because I had no room for that honking machine. This just might get me to buy one.
@Patriks7
What?!
Why would you put a handheld/cellphone/MID chip in a console?
No, just give us an 9800GX2/GTX260/HD4870 and we'll be just fine.
(Oh, and ditch the cell processor, unnecessary waste of money, just go with a quad-core or something)
But then again, this isn't a successor or something, it's just a slimmed down version, which would probably indicate a new process (as in, less nm).
And it could've been that you tried to respond to TareX, in which case I'm sorry.
And one more thing, this is probably fake, the logo looks really weird and the case seems a bit too plastic-y and cheap.
The other post of TareX that is, the one below this one.
The only thing I ever wanted out of a PS3 that it didn't already have was back-compat. Until Sony adds that I won't be buying nothin.
I am holding out for the slimmer PS3...
Anyone else find it funny that they're going back to the PS2 style logo, marketing, and box design? Seems like Sony is still trying to lean on the PS2 for sales...
I dunno, that looks pretty fake to me. Look at the logo...
Granted it has a box and everything. Who knows, the shell just looks kinda cheap.
I agree, I don't see any reason why Sony would change the logo all of a sudden, not to mention use such cheap looking plastic. Is this maybe just a PS3 knockoff that only plays DVDs?
Yeah, looks like the fake one's made in China (Like the Vii & Winner)
http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/console-wars-are-over-here-is-the-winner/
Sony's changed the logo on their products before. It went from Playstation (PSX) to PSone. I could see it happening again. Plus, Sony has redesigned both of their previous systems. It fits.
At first I agreed but then looking at the box it all looks pretty legit besides the PS3 logo, which could easily be a redesign. Not sure why they would redesign the logo, but to be honest who cares about that anyway? And to kinda contradict what Funke, Tobias Dr. said about the DVD only, it has the Blu-ray logo on the bottom of the box on that first screen shot. I think this would be pretty sweet and if it comes with a price cut because of less materials as someone already suggested as a possibility, that would be even better
I can't remember if the Ps2 boxes were marked, but I would imagine Sony would advertise somewhere on the box that it's a newly designed model.
Have you actually seen the PSone logo?
Observe:
Original Playstation: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e1/PlayStation1.JPG
PSone: http://www.old-computers.com/museum/photos/sony_psone_1.jpg
I take back everything I've said. I think this may indeed be the real deal.
Then again, that seems even stronger than the PSP-2 denial..... if they said, "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3 at this time".... well shouldn't that just kill the rumor?
The wording of Sony's denial renders the denial meaningless. By not having plans at this time, they could very well have plans for later today, or tomorrow, or next week, just not plans for right now. They will only ever say they have plans to do something if they're immediately announcing a product. Like when they said they had no plans for a price drop on the PS3, and then announced a price drop the next day. That said, I'd be surprised if Sony abandoned all their worldwide PLAYSTATION3 trademarks in favour of this new PS3 logo. We'll find out at E3 I guess.
I guess that this is just a chinese clone.
I only believe in my eyes, btw.
@TareX Holy cow, you got "First!" and "Second!"
@Pedroion That box is way too legit.
Im with Pedroion...
Yes the box does look legit, BUT, why would they change the PS3 logo.. Its no longer the Spiderman Text.. Has much more curves to the logo.. Something just doesnt seem right.. Plus. the current system has the logo printed on the system.. This is an inset logo.. Just doesnt add up..
And as for Sony dropping price.. I dont think so.. They may cut their cost on it, but they need every lil dollar/yen they can get right now to head off another 1 Billion dollar loss.. And cutting the cost doesnt mean they will actually sell enuf to make up for a price cut..
Best model yet, is still the 60GB one with built-in memory card reader, 4 USB Ports and backwards compatibility.
Every other model that came out after that they took off the memory card readers, took off some USB ports and the BC.
I have that model, and while I agree it's the best, I think the BC isn't really all that big of a deal. I've never used it, mainly because it looks worse than just plugging my PS2 in with component cables.
What I don't understand is why they don't include the software emulation they used on the older 80gbs on all models. It's not perfect, but it could handle most PS2 games and wouldn't cost them a thing.
The software emulation the 80GB models had still relied on some hardware taken from the PS2. Models after the 80GB have absolutely no PS2 hardware in them.
Nope your wrong. I have the MGS4 80 GB and it has BC, 4 usb ports AND Card readers
Please let this be true.
Please let this be Fake, I wouldn't want this fugly console on my entertainment center. I'm okay with my Phat glossy black ps3 with chrome fittings. this looks like a cheap POS.
there aint gonna be new ps3 and psp at the same time. i think there is gonna only be new psp.
PS3 not lookin authentic.
> I wouldn't want this fugly console on my entertainment center.
It's quite different for me. I have money to burn and considered to buy a console. Wii is no brainer: it fits everywhere. On other side Xbox360 is a hell: due to heating issues it literally requires a separate shelf in my hi-fi rack. But it will never get it. And top of my rack is already taken by HDTV tuner. Same goes to actual design of PS3.
I do not care how it looks. Best of all, if I wouldn't be forced to see it at all. Slim PS3, hopefully with more rack-friendly form factor, might be something what would manage to get on my prospective purchase list.
I still cannot get why they make the fancy console designs. Why not to think five minutes extra - and make it stackable - just like all hi-fi components already are.
Damn it, I was gonna buy another PS3 soon, but am now gonna hold out instead.
No more Spider-man Font?!? It's a fake...
I agree... total fake!
I don't like Spiderman anyway.
yea that and the dull looking plastic...
its just so damn fugly....
I mean I'll be glad when they drop the price so I can get another one for the Bedroom but damn if I want it looking like that
i think that font was too menacing to the average consumer. Now that the hardcore first adopters have their consoles, the change is a good move.
Yeah, a poor KIRF perhaps?
It looks like a flattened version of the PS3.
it is a flattend version of the PS3
A Wii jumped on it, Mario style, and something shot out and this is what's left. The Wii then picked it up and threw it and killed a bunch of still-fat PS3s standing in a line. Then it got a 1-up.
The worst thing about the current console - the Spiderman font - isn't there, which probably means this is fake. That's a shame though, because getting rid of the Spiderman font - on both the console and all the game packaging would be a step in the right marketing direction anyway.
Did I miss something? A company cannot change fonts anymore? Besides, the original PS3 has "Playstation 3", not "PS3", written in "Spider-man" font; so having "PS3" in another font doesn't really break any consistency rule.
Saying that this is fake based on the font alone is laughable.
Ain't broke, why fix it?
Because you don't see where it broke?...
um.. yeah... looks fake. i dont think sony would come out with that type of casing unless it's b4 it gets a glossy coating of some sort. i'll stick with my 1st gen 60gb 4 usb port, memory card reading, backwards compatable fatty
So here is the real question, is Sony going to sell more consoles because its thinner??? I think not
If the price is thinner, I think so.
I haven't bought the PS3 because of it's ungainly size...it's horrific and huge. I would seriously consider getting this though.
A little from column A, a little from column B... A cheaper, thinner PS3 would make it under my TV.
I agree. Price is the real factor. I wouldn't have got one if it wasn't a b-day present that a bunch of friends went in on. The PS3 could catch up to the 360 in North America if they get the price down (oh and more exclusives like LBP and less like Killzone 2 thank you very much).
Whether these are fake or not, I'm 100% sure they are working on a smaller form factor PS3. Friggin' liars.
Stupid comment system. Why do we have to click reply twice just to reply?
Undoubtedly. With all of the size reductions of the internals it would only make sense to shrink the system. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time Sony made a size reduction to their console (heck even the PSP got one).
One thing though - why doesn't PS3 have backwards compatibilty? I know it can't be a size issue, and I doubt the cost is that significant (they're still making new PS2s so it's not like they're not producing the parts). Do they even have a reason anymore outside of selling more PS2s?

there should be live chat system
nice name :-)
As someone who just bought a PS3 in 12/08, all I can say is reinstate PS2 compatibility or GTFO.
I don't think enough people care about this. Especially with the PS2 Slim price drop..
I'll have to respectfully disagree. The last thing I care about is a PS2 Slim. I already have a fully functioning PS2 (39001, so not slim); and what I want is digital outputs, virtual memory cards, and DualShock3 for my PS2 games. I don't really wanna have to switch out my PS2 and PS3 to play the different titles, and the closest thing the PS2 has to a decent output are component cables or shitty VGA knockoff boxes.
Due to the way the PS3 emulates the PS2, the PS2 will still look better through component cables than a PS3 running a PS2 game via HDMI cables.
there aint gonna be new ps3 and psp at the same time. i think there is gonna only be new psp.
PS3 not lookin authentic
Unless it comes with a cheaper price tag, I couldn't imagine it being worth it.
its gonna be hard bringing new hardware and price drop at the same time.
unless sony ready to take huge loss.
there are not even good enough exlusive titles to bring sony some royalty cash.
Exclusives? Have you seen this year's line up...its fkin nuts the number of exclusives coming out.
@ishaan55
Its not new hardware its a redesign. They are not changing the basic things that make the PS3 a PS3. It will still have the Cell processor (maybe size reduced) and Blue-Ray. For most companies the major reason for a redesign is price reduction or because parts are reaching end of life. I don't see end of life as being the reason for a redesign of the PS3 so the most logical consideration is price reduction.
If this redesign is true which I don't think it is.
there aint gonna be new ps3 and psp at the same time. i think there is gonna only be new psp.
'PS3' font not lookin authentic
exactly, dead giveaway.
it is the wrong time for hardware refresh. ps3 is not selling good.
new ps3 and psp on the same day is gonna be good on the sony stocks
i would love a $200-250 ps3.
prices should be like:
xbox360
Keep dreaming if you think the ps3 price is gonna be like the xbox 360.
PS3 costs more to make and there is the whole bluray thing to consider as well so dont expect those sorts of prices soon.
Maybe you should look for a second hand unit. They'd prob be in that price range.
If it's cheaper for Sony to produce a PS3 Slim it may not be such a bad time to refresh. Additionally, Sony apparently has a lot of big exclusives coming out this fiscal year.
Oh...don't expect a price that low for the PS3 for a good five years or more. I mean they only just cut the price of PS2 to $100. I mean while a price that low would mean they'd be really competitive with the Wii, they'd still lose a buttload.
Actually, if the PS3 was 250-300, Sony would see significant gain. Not only would more people purchase the console, but more Blu-ray discs are sold.
Not only that, but Sony can afford to take a hit this generation. If Nintendo and/or Microsoft use Blu-ray discs in their next consoles, Sony will see profits from every disc produced. Making money off their competition.
It would be an interesting direction for the console. Parents would be more likely to let their kids touch it. Sony needs to do something bold. I'm gonna say/hope this is real. the bottom case pic is the most convincing to me.
It's Sony's terrible attempt to continue making money off he ps2 line. They don't want to admit that ps2 is dead and the collateral damage is it's hurting the ps3. I love the ps2 but big brother ps3 is here, let the ps2 go.
That just has to be fake :P
Everything except the logo looks pretty convincing, but i don't think Sony would change the branding. I'd like to see how they'd fit the cell cpu into such a small package if this is true.
If that's the new design I'm quite happy with my "old" version.
Strikes me as rather elaborate to be a hoax.
Who prints a full blown box and molds plastic just to fool a bunch of bloggers.
And it does not look photoshopped.
We have to wait and see but I tend to believe this as well because going as far as moulding a fake case and printing a fake box is a bit excessive for a hoax. Sony has past record for making a smaller version so why so hard to believe.
Isn't it a bit early for a redesign? The slim and PSone didn't come out for a bit...also consider that the PSP is ripe for replacement.
So, still only 2 USB ports?
If i had any part in "SCE" i would absolutely hate you guys.
You never know what you want.
Half the people want 'this'...... others want 'that'...... while the minority who don't have one want everything for less than 250?
How can a system that offers so much to the consumer possibly add all the 'extras' and not have a stiff price?
PS3 with all the fixings costs money.....DUH
I have the OG 60gb it was made clear that the cheaper it got the more 'bare' was going to be.
No backwards cap? EVERYONE HAS A PS2 ....... plug it in; still works.
No memory card reader? USB 500 in 1 card readers on new egg for cheap.
Only two usb slots? What do you need more than two for? i have four and never use more than one.
If you don't want it don't buy it. But enough with the B*tchin and Moaning
I think they might be fitting this with the 45nm cell processor which should help decrease the size, power consumption and price!!!!
The only thing I would want in a redesign is a FLAT TOP. I hate that you can't stack anything on the PS3 because of that weird top. It would be great if it were designed to look like any normal theater component.
There's a good trick to that.
Put the PS3 on top. :D
I'm not in marketing, but that box looks like crap. I'm not in consumer electronics, but the plastic cover looks cheap and weak. I'm not in graphic design, but the logo looks awful. I'm not in packaging, but i'm pretty sure that the box would need to be bigger than it appears there. I'm not in manufacturing, but that guy should get better fitting gloves. If the glove don't fit...
It would be great to have a slim PS3. It would be awesome if it coincided with a significant price cut. But it would also be good if I sprouted wings and was given the keys to the Playboy mansion.
I dunno. It looks pretty real to me: slightly longer to accommodate the cut down in height, a slight font change isn't a huge deal, and all of the logos other than that are the same and don't have any misspelling... so if I'm wrong, they're gonna get SLAMMED for infringing on Sony's names/services.
I guess we'll see soon enough. /crosses fingers
Looks real to me. The plastic looks cheap probably because of the image blur. I'm not sure though
Assuming this eventually happens and that it is not a hoax, heat dissipation would be my first concern in purchasing a "slim" PS3. I have a circa-November 2008 model PS3 and the unit still throws off a lot of heat when in use (I use the word 'still' as I recall reading the 1st generation units had issues with overheating).
Well there lies the advantage in being able to shrink the components down. Theoretically they should produce less heat and consume less power. When the PS3 first came out they were working with a 90nm process. I know they cut it down to 65nm since then. I thought they got it down to 45nm but I'm not sure.
if this slim version was true i quess the user being able to change the hard drive would go, as it looks to slim to have an open bay to change one out
I personally prefer my 60GB unit, but it looks pretty legit.
In reference to the font, keep in mind that Sony changed the font on the PlayStation store a while ago from the all caps "PLAYSTATION 3" that currently appears on the hardware to the more traditional "PlayStation 3" sans Spiderman font. The new font could reflect that change.
Also, as others have said, Sony has changed fonts before on the original PlayStation to PSOne without changing any of the game packaging.
Also, if there isn't a price drop, the slimness isn't going to help.
PS3 logo on the bottom?
PS3 logo on the top not chrome?
nice photo job but i cant see Sony not putting all the silver accents they can on a new slim design.
Everyone saying that the plastic looks way too cheap, it looks almost identical to the plastic used currently on the PStwo. I think its a good decision getting away from that fingerprint prone glossy crap. I hate it on my monitors, and I hate it on my gaming consoles.
Really, everyone's probably worried that it's too good to be true. In true Sony fashion it most likely will be. I'd wager that even if they do shrink the system down the price won't see a significant cut for quite a few months (minimum) more. As I stated earlier, they only just set the MSRP for the PS2 to $100. The components for that system can't cost nearly that much by this point.
They aren't going to drop the PS2. Remember, they have a 10 year plan with their systems. The PS2 came out in 2000 (1999 in Japan) so they're sticking with it until 2010; at least.
EVEryone really seems to want this to be true... prob just some knock off "fun station 3"
The only problem with that sentiment is that the Sony brand name, the Playstation name and symbol are all correct. There're no misspellings, no missing letters, no skewed anything.
the writings on the pictures are simplified chinese which means these pictures are leaked out from china which means.. these pictures are the CHINA ripoff version. China piracy ftw!
