Not that the original was any sort of tame, but some new, incredibly grainy leaked shots of a PS3 "slim," if they prove legitimate, point to a pretty wild redesign in store for the console in the near future -- not to mention what would be one of the smallest Blu-ray devices we've seen yet. There seem to be a lot of similarities to the Slimline PS2, while still holding onto that curvature the PS3 is so well known for, and even squeezing in a slot-loading disc drive and 120GB hard drive. Of course, Sony has issued a pretty strong denial of
existing PS3 slim rumors, stating that "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3 at this time," but that's a pretty common way for Sony to deal with rumors, no matter which way they fall. We'll probably have to wait until E3 to learn the real truth, but it's a good bet this won't be the last true or false rumor to hit about a real or fake console in the run-up to the show. At least this one's packing pictures.

If that's the case then there should be a major lawsuit on the way right? I really don't see anything all that fake about it. So the logo's different; that's explainable. Everything else seems legit. Then again, I'm being really hopeful here...
Even though I'd be happy about a price cut, I don't think the current model requires any "slimming". Unlike its predecessors, given its awesome multimedia capabilities, the PS3 is meant to sit proudly and permanently atop the home theater next to a large FullHD display. It's not anymore a toy that you bring in and out of the the living room.
I'm also concerned that a slim version might not allow the easy replacement of the HDD as it does now, which is a great competitve advantage.
As mentioned by others, the logo does look fake to me too.
C'MON Engadget really?? You can spot fakes all the time but when this comes around you can't spot it? TOTALLY NEW LOGO? PIECE OF SHIT PLASTIC EXTERIOR? IT LOOKS LIKE A BAD KNOCK-OFF. This should be BURIED...if only this was digg.... But of course it's ENGADGET SPANISH that BREAKS THE NEWS!!! Haha. Ya right.
First off the chinese is on the picture not the box. Second, do you think Sony manufacturers their crap in Japan? Maybe assembled but not manufactured. Which tells you this was probably taken at a Sony plant in China. Third, This may not even be Western friendly, since the west is laggin on PS3 sales...
they wouldnt change the ps3 logo so this is definitely bs
Can you show me the "official" PS3 logo? As far as I know, there never was a PS3 logo. Sony has always been using the fullname "Playstation 3" with the spider-man font. So using another font for "PS3" is not breaking any consistency rule. I'm not saying this is real or fake. But you can't judge by the font alone.
I can not effing believe I am STILL reading comments about the effing price. Are you people serious?! It's $399! Go buy a Blu Ray player - ANY BLU RAY PLAYER you choose, then go buy an Xbox 360 with at least 80gb of storage. Then add wireless. Then add the Play and Charge kit so the controllers don't need batteries.
Cheapest Blu Ray Player I could find (Sylvania on Amazon) : $199.99
Xbox 360 60gb (20gb less than PS3, but it'll do : $299.99
Play and Charge Kit : $17.99
Wireless Adapter : $76.99
TOTAL COST : $594.96
I mean, really? At $399.00 you cheap bastards are STILL complaining?
Excuse me but you don't seem to have your info straight.
If you are talking about all the cheapest products why don't you also apply that to the Xbox?
Cheapest Blu Ray Player: $199.99
Cheapest Xbox 360: $199.99
TOTAL: $400... looks like that seems to be the same price as your PS3. shuckz :(
(Also why do you need to buy a wireless adapter for the Xbox? The majority of people with an Xbox use wired... and you most definitely do not need a Play & Charge kit.)
Too little, too late... The PS3 is not wallet friendly, and right now they are so far from the competition in the way of footprint and price that they need a complete redesign to properly compete with Wii, which is the game changer for consoles. I prefer XBox, always have, but Wii is now the standard so both MS and Sony need to step up. I think Sony is going to announce major restructuring and probably cut the less profitable divisions. I think PS, and cell phone divisions might be gone, and I wouldn't be surprised if they focused back on their core of consumer electronics. But who knows, maybe they will do something outside the box.
The Wii is not the game standard. I don't know any one that thinks the Wii is the greatest game system. The Wii is a great party system for when you have friends over. For the most part is has a bad game selection. It has a huge game selection but only a select few are worth owning. Most gamers are not looking for a game system that has sub-par graphics and uncomfortable controllers. They want the XBox360 or the PS3. The major advantage the Wii had was its price at launch and the Wii controller which was instantly accessible to every one. These two things have kept the Wii at the top of the sales charts. The Wii is fun but lags way behind the technology curve when it comes to graphics, speed, and features.
I can learn to love the new logo, its the last thing I'm gonna be lookin at tbh. Still....
EPIC WANT!
Nice, Sony's new reason to keep the price ridiculously high on this POS. Fail. 1 loss in 14 years anyone? Does that tell you anything?
Let me quote today's earnings presentation:
"
Sales [Game division]: Overall segment sales decrased mainly as a result of the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales.
Operating incoming [Game division]: Operating loss decreased due to PS3 hardware cost reduction and increased sales of PS3 software, despite the impact of the decrease in sales in the PS2 business.
"
PS3 hardware units sales 10% increase FY08 compared to FY07
PS3 software units sales 79% increase FY08 compared to FY07

There you go. Next time, I suggest you educate yourself and dig a bit deeper before quoting some financial news headline as if you know what you are talking about.
Stick to making games. Thats where they need to focus. No wonder they keep losing exclusive games.
@ CreepinJesus
Dumbass, you're comparing a laptop that's suppose to be mobile hence smaller size will be more expensive. PS3 is suppose to be a "home" console, making it smaller will not raise its price.
I think they might be fitting this with the 45nm cell processor which should help decrease the size, power consumption and price!!!!
Japanese corporations are very anal about their technology. If you watch their corporate strategy closely, you can see throughout the many years in their making, technology only goes into Japan but never gets out. Now, with china trying to catchup and become the big brother of asia, you think sony will leak out how they designed the PS3 in china?
The cost of changing a logo is really expensive. You need propaganda, and a lot of commercial to let people know.
Actually, that logo seems very realistic. It just looks like an updated PS2 logo, so I am not surprised by this at all. Heck, even the PS3 -Playstation 3- part looks like the PS2 logo. This may indeed be authentic. =]
That was my thought exactly. Heck I even looked it up just to be sure. It looks just like the PS2 logo, except with curvier letters to match the curvier shape of the system.
how much does the 'best' 'phatty' ps3 go for these days? the 60 gig 4 usb memory card backwards compatible one? would i even be able to find it on say ebay?
They would never cut the PlayStation, that is sonys major source of income, it runs there buisness. I don't know what your thinking man, they have regular consumer products, like tv's, surround sound, but the ps3 brings it all together, it allows people to play the stuff on there tv's and surround sound. I dont know what the heck you are thinking.
"Looks like a medieval warrior."
You guys have it all wrong, they're not shrinking the PS3, they're making the controller bigger. They hired the original XBox controller designers to help improve the ergonomics.
That is a real product manufactured at a Chinese factory. It may be a preproduction unit made as a design excercise. All of the individual parts are legit. The box looks legit as well and is about the size of the current PS2 box.
The cheap looking plastic is what a manufacturing company normally uses to test out mold designs. It is a lot easier to test the flow rate and notice imperfections in the design.
What was really cool about the 60GB PS3 and the original Sixaxis is that th eplastic is semi-transparent. It looks opaque until you shine a light on it. Really cool but expensive. The plastics used in the DualShock are lesser quality.
This looks real. Besides Sony is probably looking at Nintendo. They can change a design slightly and get millions to rebuy a product they already have. If this does com eout I might look at selling my 60GB and picking this up.
"We *currently* don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3 *at this time*?" Damn, whoever in the Sony PR department wrote THAT nugget of English must be getting paid like a champion. Probably has tons of cash just waiting for him at the automatic ATM machine. He could just enter his personally identifying PIN number and withdraw as much money as he likes!
This is definitely a fake. As others have pointed out, the PS3 logo is completely wrong, and Sony wouldn't change it as recognizable as it is. I mean heck, they haven't changed the PS2 logo or the PS logo in however many years the Playstation has been around. Good attempt, but no.
Have you actually seen the PSone logo?
Observe:
Original Playstation: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e1/PlayStation1.JPG
PSone: http://www.old-computers.com/museum/photos/sony_psone_1.jpg
Sorry, I didn't specify. the PS2 and PS3 logos are made up of actual characters. By PS logo, I was talking about the colorful PlayStation symbol that appears on all PlayStation products; it's never changed. It's even on the original PlayStation, which can be seen in the link you provided. My bad for not being specific!
Sony hasn't used the colorful logo on the psp box art for the past year. Heck none of the psp's even have a color logo on them just black or white.
^^^What he said.
Doesnt make sense, all theyre showing is the lid to the ps3, that doesnt prove anything, especialy the box, why would you spend a bunch of money and make new boxes for a SLIM ps3 and then have the photo of the ps3 a 3/4 above shot? it would make more sense if they put the photo like the ps2 slim showing a front view of how much slimmer it is, when you make changes you highlight that feature on advertising and product material, not obscure it with above and to the side shots.
Sony won't change the "spiderman font" identity in midst of a physical update on a same generation console.
It's probably a real imitation that has the guts or stupidity to use Sony and PS3 and PSN on their product.
If true, it seems like a dumb idea. I mean, it doesn't address the two most common complaints about the PS3: the still-too-high price and the lack of backwards compatibility with the huge PS2/PSX library.
Plus, the slim PSX and PS2 weren't announced until the devices were in the $150-200 range. This seems far too early to be real.
These aren't pics that Sony released to hype the new model... these would be (if real) leaked production pics. That being said, OF COURSE IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP. It's not even put together in 5 of the 6 pictures. Also, why wouldn't they change the logo? The republican party is rebranding itself; why? Because it isn't succeeding and they are hoping to change their appearance for a different audience. Let's apply this to sony. The units are not selling as well as anyone would like. Sure the sales have increased this year but it's not enough of an increase for them to say that it has been completely successful as planned. The only intelligent decision for them at this point IS a PS3 redesign. The people that own them already may not give a crap but to people that have been hesitant or ignored it, this will be their hook. The biggest complain, under the price, is the size of the machine. It would be in their best interest to appeal to both that and the price issue. Maybe they'll release this one at a lowered price or maybe they'll release at full and drop the price of the older ones; who knows. But they need to do something big.
sweet! another version i won't buy!
I hope this is true. Maybe I'll finally buy one.
What the fuck?
It's the ugliest thing ever and NO SPIDERMAN FONT? WHAT?
Nice Photo Shop job but the maker forgot to put a crease across the ps3 on the box. Close but no cigar. No slim ps3 in the near future folks. Sorry but nope.
I think that looks nice, and it kinda does look like something Sony would make, slim, modern...
Anyway, they would have it with the bigger memory, since the new HD movie store, downloads, etc.
Those pictures could be from it, but, they could also be some Chinese knockoff that plays NES games or something...
Though that box looks very believable, more believable than what I usually see as a knockoff from China.
It looks pretty legit to me, considering the world crysis and the loss of 1B$ published by reuters, sony will probably try to lower even more the production costs, and then open the breach against the Xbox360. The box has PSN, Blu Ray and the original PS and Sony logos. The chinese rip-offs don`t have that...
The packaging uses the wrong font - a company like Sony follow visual identities to the products death, so the probability of it beeing fake imo is about 99,99%.
i dont think sony would make same that ugly, every time they have done a redesign, it looks much better than the previous iteration, but this looks like a POS.
personally i think sony would keep the 'spiderman' font and i reckon they would make the casing on the console glossy like the current playstation 3, which would also complement the psp
and i reckon that the logo on the packaging here is fake, i dont think sony would recycle the playstation 2 style font on a much more better console.
being the owner of a ps3 myself (60gig FTW) i hope that they do bring out a slimline model but i reckon that its a bit too early to do it now, especially when reports say that theyve been making a loss, as the production costs are too high.
wouldnt it make more sense for sony to try and recover a majority of the money before spending more money in releasing a new ps3.
i dont think theres anything wrong with the current model, in fact its the best console ive ever owned, and i also have a 360.
but i reckon that these pictures are all fakes, that look cheaply built
Wouldn't the box have something regarding "new design"?
After carefully looking at these pics the machine isn't really that slim at all. Also if you look at the disk slot and the top portion of the bottom of the unit (in the pic showing the usb slots) it clearly has a glossy finish. The reduction in size is most likely do to the fact that there is no need for the card reader portion of the machine because they dropped that back in 07.
I'm surprised no-one has picked up on this. Why would Sony use a top-down image of a re-designed "slim" console. Surely the best marketing would be done by showing how slim it is on the box. Top down it could look exactly the same as the 1st gen PS3. It's totally a fake.
I think it has the potential to be real. When looking at the boxed image and the photos carefully, the boxed image has buttons (what I assume to be touch-sensitive) in front of the disc drive slot. These are absent in the other photos, which are possibly just the top piece of the console. (NOTE: The small leg things on the bottom of the unit in the second image that could connect it to another piece)
It may look awkward now, but that's because of its thickness. The whole unit couldn't possibly be that thin. If it were, someone killed the designers over at Sony. We can't see the thickness of the entire console in the boxed image because it is a birds-eye view, and therefore is hiding a nice good look of the console as a whole. Regardless, the box does seem to show this top part of the console a little elevated from the ground, than the other pictures shown above. There's shadow on the right...
Don't base the console on the top of it. Chop the current PS3 in half...I'd be looking at a very ugly machine underneath my TV.
Looks to me like a photoshop edited image...and is more like top half of the current model.
