SmartQ 7 MID unboxing
Our compatriots at Engadget Chinese just got ahold of that surprisingly attractive SmartQ 7 MID, and have given the thing a proper unboxing. Hands-on impressions are on the way as well, but it's not hard to see that despite the continued pointlessness of MIDs in most practical applications, they're only getting better. Except for the ones that aren't.

Is it gnome, is it OS X, is it windows?
I just don't know.
Looks like a nice interface though.
Hmm, I see an Epiphany icon, a Pidgin icon, a Gnome network icon, and a panel that looks a lot like Gnome-Panel. I would say Gnome.
That's not a gnome-network-manager icon, that's Wicd, a far, far superior network management daemon.
Are they allowed to use that wallpaper?
I think they are allowed to use that wallpaper. I was thinking the same thing.
It's a popular effect on photoshop i think, although it might not be original.. Still looks vernas though

Are they from China?
Your Gameboy is from china!
Nub.
it's some kind of ARM linux stuff, if I remember right
It's running XP and its got a 60GB SSD I think. I read a review about in a magazine its pretty swish.
That must be a different MID you were reading about - this one is similar to their Q5 MID which has been a slight disaster in every way except the price. This one is running Ubuntu on an ARM proc - not XP and as far as internal memory, it most likely is around 1GB of internal flash memory.

Ubuntu for God's sake! It's right on the manufacturer's page.
Oli D's question was in regard to the interface, not the OS.
The interface takes elements from all of them. It has the colors of the Windows logo on it's 4-circle "Start" button, the taskbar is black and semi-transparent (Vista), and it looks like that is Vista's mouse pointer. The Home folder icon on the desktop looks OS X'ish, and that user icon on the bottom left looks Windows'ish. But we all know Chinese manufacturer's would never pony-up for actual Windows or OS X licenses so it's got to be a Linux distro likely using Gnome.
Whut?!
Are they going to give props to Abduzeedo for the background?

They don't have to give credit, but it is.
I'm not positive, but I think someone from Engadget may have taken those pictures.
Oh!!! So that's why there's a huge Engadget watermark on the picture!
Photo frames are pointless.
Nice use of Fábio Sasso's wallpaper :P.
Just how powerful are these things?
can I surf the web, visit pages that have flash content and watch youtube, hulu on these things without making them cry?
Not enough to properly run ubuntu arm, unless you like waiting 2min for it to startup and the nostalgic feel of a 286
More then powerfull enough to run Ubuntu ARM properly. N810's have an older generation ARM CPU with about half the performance and they run Ubuntu fine.
Startup on an ARM device is going to be long no matter what the device. They aren't meant to be turned on and off like your Computer. Rather they go into a low power mode, similar to sleep on a Laptop, but generally they can still process and be connected Wifi, etc. That's the real advantage here.
fair enough, but with Q5 (as will be with the Q7) Ubuntu has been poorly implemented, apps run sluggish and its to the point where you can't use it as a functional device, then again this is all software related, we can hope SmartQ does the right thing and fixes the firmware so stuff actually can properly run on it, however i think you will see them just adding more bells and whistles before they actually try and improve the software.
more pics, including one trying desperately to show it maybe pocket portable, lol

I really love MIDs in theory, I think they're really cool devices, but I just can't for the life of me come up with a reasonable excuse to buy one. What would I do with it?
OliD is a moron, and apparently so are you.
A guy who can't work the reply button properly shouldn't be throwing out "moron" disses. Just saying.
