Next iPhone to launch July 17 with OLED display and glowing Apple logo?
You had to know we'd see a flurry of iPhone rumors and news as the Apple community reacted to the Pre's official price and launch date, and right on schedule, we've got whispers that Cupertino's next handset will be announced at WWDC, feature an OLED display and a glowing Apple logo, and launch on July 17. There's also a longer list of detailed specs, but for the most part they're just a combination of that matte black casing leak from February and those Chinese specs from last week. So are they the real deal? Well, the source and the site they're on seem a little shaky to us, but the specs themselves don't seem too far-fetched -- OLED screens are getting cheaper and more prevalent, and we're almost certain to see bumps in camera resolution and storage, so even if they are totally made up, we'd venture to guess they're more right than wrong. That's just us, though -- check out the full spec list after the break and tell us what you think.

Awesome!
Pre "punks jump up to get beat down"...
Apple must love the free marketing they get from these "fanboys" and haters..Amazing how people actually take sides of companies they get no type of profit from..
Either I know this phone will be niceeee..
Marking down in calendar.
Hope the glowing apple doesn't decrease my battery life even more ;-)
http://www.pooptheworld.com 2.0 will def be out by then to help you keep trackin' where you're crappin'
t
and I jizzed in my pants...
I was able to take off my pants before jizzing...
not as good as the pre.
fight
Wait till apple fans see this new amazing tech ... SHINY LOGO
* Apple logo on back will glow * = All apple fans jizzed in there pants
I hope apple doesn't fuck up the camera (the hell with MP race... K800i camera still beats Nokia N95 5MP camera)
Use good lens apple and i'll buy the iphone 4G or whatever its going to be called
WWDC = Worldwide Douchebag Conference
So after bashing the Pre, we get a slight spec bump and a glowing Apple logo, as the "smackdown" that the fanboys promised?
Ok.
I'm not an apple fan so:
* 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
should have been so from start
* $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
um... so? Whats the unlocked price?
* 3.2-megapixel camera (up from the current 2-megapixel camera)
Wow... in 2009...
* Video-recording and editing capabilities
How about HD? No HD? Too bad.
* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
Wow thats a new feature!!! Never seen that in a mobile phone! Oh, wait, I sent some myself last year... oh well.
* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
Thats too bad, I hope it won't fall apart as some other phones I know that give such a feeling.
* OLED screen
Would have been a "WOW" factor a year or two ago but todays Samsung already has some OLED screens and is going to offer more and more. Nokia has some too.
* 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
Good!
* Double the RAM and processing power
Very good!
* Built-in FM transmitter
Awesome! Now I need to find a use for it...
* Apple logo on back will glow
So KIRFy...
* Rubber-tread backing
I would have preferred metal but this will do.
* Sleeker design
Wider? No, thanks. Slimmer? No, thanks. Longer? No, thanks. Narrower? Yes, please.
* Built-in compass
Um... so?
* The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
Wow, so? Interesting but useless if you ask me - just bring along a map or a tourist guide. Or learn to Google ;)
* Turn-by-turn directions
Good!
Basically: good! But nothing I haven't seen before. Most likely, will be overpriced compared to competition.
Nothing to droll about.
Ok, thanks for reading, now you can Low Rank me.
I wonder how many iphones thick the new iphone is. - i'll have to renew my measuring unit system :(
''WWDC = Worldwide Douchebag Conference"
nice one eric LMAO
Nokia, Palm, Apple, Samsung and co., stop making my decisions in life so fucking difficult ... I have enough trouble as it is deciding what to eat let alone choosing a smartphone.
For people wondering how boosted the battery time by 50% and doubled the CPU+RAM = Thanks to the OLED screen these screens use much much less power and have a better display its a new Tech which samsung mobiles already use"
Iphone Irreplaceable battery was always the worst thing about iphone for people who use there phones for a longtime specially for a multimedia device , now they have no excuse
this beats the lame @ss Tour, Pre, and whatever else the competitors can try and come up with
Thats like someone telling you "on the other side of the wall there is a naked woman" and you having to go change your tighty whities. The read link is already gone. Its all fake. And the person on the other side of the wall is actually Buba, hes a sagitarius and likes vulnerable boys on the internet who have nothing better to do but cream their pants over the slightest whiff of a rumor.
@DR House, it's still going to run out after 4 hours. But if it's apple they will somehow find a way to say it gets 8 hours.
Also, the light on the back best have an option to be turned off; no-one would appreciate a drain on battery power for a light when your phone is in a case.
The Pre got *official* and Apple responds with a *rumour*. LOL
"this beats the lame @ss Tour, Pre, and whatever else the competitors can try and come up with"
Oh go crawl back into your suburban white hole. This was nothing out of this world like you fan fuggers were pushing everyone to believe. Nothing more than an expected spec bump.
Hell most of this stuff, sans the revolutionary glowing Apple logo, is already part of EXISTING phones.
Apparently Apple couldn't come up with anything "original", eh?
OLED display eh? just gets better and better :).
"Also, the light on the back best have an option to be turned off; no-one would appreciate a drain on battery power for a light when your phone is in a case."
It doesn't drain your battery. Look up how the MacBook illuminates it's Apple logo.
I don't know about 'double the ram and double the processor'. Double the ram makes sense but 'double the processor' sounds like someone WANTING a faster processor. I mean, if they said 746mhz or whatever, that would make sense. 'Double' is just made up and wishful thinking, imho.
Also, with no official word from apple whatsoever, we are seeing thing like, "$199 and $299 price points to be maintained??"
Personally, I think the whole spec is made up. I wouldn't be overly surprised if apple didn't release sh*t in july.
Best.
@Shinigami
I am an apple fan.
"* 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
should have been so from start"
Cost of memory chips at the time would have not made this a feasible options to obtain a pricing point in which to sell the phone, now they are able to do it with cheaper components.
"* $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
um... so? Whats the unlocked price?"
Unlocked price will probably be around $699
"* 3.2-megapixel camera (up from the current 2-megapixel camera)
Wow... in 2009..."
Another uninformed person about megapixel, 2-megapixel is really plenty, but it's a numbers game, and 3.2mp will sell more phones. Just like a 10megapixel point and shoot is good, but a 10megapixel DSLR is a lot better, it's all about the CMOS sensor. Not the number listed int he specs.
"* Video-recording and editing capabilities
How about HD? No HD? Too bad."
Not feasible at this point in time, you can't combine a $299 dollar (subsidized phone) and a Flip MinoHD and expect to sell it for that same $299 Price point, basic business practice would show you that you would be eating the hardware costs. Apple is not in the market for making free products. They already donate to plenty of charities.
"* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
Wow thats a new feature!!! Never seen that in a mobile phone! Oh, wait, I sent some myself last year... oh well."
Yes, it is a new feature, for the iPhone. After all phone manufacturers have been in the business for several years, this is Apple's 3rd year, and when implementing a feature they make sure the feature is seamless. Other phone manufacturers, not so much.
"* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
Thats too bad, I hope it won't fall apart as some other phones I know that give such a feeling."
Apple is known for it's engineering. The metal band around the edge is more of a beauty flaw cause it gets scratched up and dulled. Plus a piece of plastic could do it's job, and knowing apple it's going to be a polycarbonate so it's going to be fairly strong, and will be more than capable of holding the screen in place.
"* OLED screen
Would have been a "WOW" factor a year or two ago but todays Samsung already has some OLED screens and is going to offer more and more. Nokia has some too."
Again, at the time (two years ago) these screens were over priced and would not be economical to place int he iPhone, I really don't see that it much more economic now, considering the additional hardware components, I expect a standard capacitive touch screen in the 3rd gen as well.
"* 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
Good!"
Battery technology really hasn't improved so, yea, Good!
"* Double the RAM and processing power
Very good!"
I agree.
"* Built-in FM transmitter
Awesome! Now I need to find a use for it..."
A lot of Zune users love their FM capability, and Apple really has been lacking here for a while, Although I don't really need it, I think a lot of people might find it useful.
"* Apple logo on back will glow
So KIRFy..."
Not so much, the Logo glows on the back of the MacBook line, so why not in the phone. A little over engineering, but I think it would make for a weird, but nice touch. Either way it doesn't bother me.
"* Rubber-tread backing
I would have preferred metal but this will do."
If you have owned an iPhone you will know this is a very welcome change.
"* Sleeker design
Wider? No, thanks. Slimmer? No, thanks. Longer? No, thanks. Narrower? Yes, please."
Narrower? No Thanks, this would destroy the aspect ratio for video content and render playback almost useless. Screen size should remain the size, only that should vary would be the thickness of the device.
"* Built-in compass
Um... so?"
For some this is a welcome feature, especially those who plan on using the GPS capabilities of the phone. Not only that but I feel a ton of applications could be made to take advantage of this with the proper APIs in place.
"* The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
Wow, so? Interesting but useless if you ask me - just bring along a map or a tourist guide. Or learn to Google ;)"
Geotagging is a hip thing, the compass will inform you in which direction you were facing when the picture was taking, the GPS will give you the exact location, Google Maps would show you that location on a map. You could be hiking a trail and stop to take a picture, and instead of searching for that spot on a map, it's geotagged and direction oriented to tell you exactly where it was at, no more guessing. Makes things easier, thats what devices are for...
"* Turn-by-turn directions
Good!"
If you say so :)
"Ok, thanks for reading, now you can Low Rank me."
I didn't low rank you for your opinion, I think everyone should be entitled to one and you present decent arguments.
Now you can low rank me. :)
@Sean
There's a difference between an iPhone and a Macbook's screen though.
In a Macbook the only thing in the screen portion is the screen and it's backlight thus they really just have to make an opaque window and the backlight lights it.
In an iPhone there's the actual device PCB and battery in between the screen and the backlight...so unless Apple got really fancy with some mirrors (which would be dumb in it's own way) it has to be an additional lighting source for the logo, thus it will consume additional power.
@7egend:
* 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
should have been so from start
--except that flash media limitations existed that have been expanded. Larger capacities "from start" would have made them prohibitively expensive.
* $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
um... so? Whats the unlocked price?
--um... I'd imagine the same as they are now. It is the way Apple *always* releases products.
* 3.2-megapixel camera (up from the current 2-megapixel camera)
Wow... in 2009...
--Yes, wow, because you need a high MP camera on your phone. Not.
* Video-recording and editing capabilities
How about HD? No HD? Too bad.
--Again - no one cares. If it shoots video, it's a perk. If you want HD, get a video cam or SLR that does it.
* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
Wow thats a new feature!!! Never seen that in a mobile phone! Oh, wait, I sent some myself last year... oh well.
--Good for you. People with iPhones will welcome the feature.
* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
Thats too bad, I hope it won't fall apart as some other phones I know that give such a feeling.
--Seriously, you are just stretching to make comments.
* OLED screen
Would have been a "WOW" factor a year or two ago but todays Samsung already has some OLED screens and is going to offer more and more. Nokia has some too.
--OLED is still very much a wow factor. *very* few devices actually use a high res OLED display and if it's true it will be great for battery life and the display will be beautiful.
* 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
Good!
--Indeed it is.
* Double the RAM and processing power
Very good!
--Yup.
* Built-in FM transmitter
Awesome! Now I need to find a use for it...
--You are sitting in your friend's car and you say "I just got this awesome new song by Brittany Spears", because you are her #1 fan and all, and since your iPhone has an FM transmitter, all you have to do is tune the radio into an FM station and BAM, you can destroy your friendship in HiFi.
* Apple logo on back will glow
So KIRFy...
--Dude, dorks love glowing logos. You know it's true.
* Rubber-tread backing
I would have preferred metal but this will do.
--Except metal does bad things for radio reception... and that would be bad in this case.
* Sleeker design
Wider? No, thanks. Slimmer? No, thanks. Longer? No, thanks. Narrower? Yes, please.
--Narrower? Um, no thanks. No one wants less resolution on a internet connected device.
* Built-in compass
Um... so?
--Because then you can find your way out of your ass! woot!
* The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
Wow, so? Interesting but useless if you ask me - just bring along a map or a tourist guide. Or learn to Google ;)
--That's the point, numbnuts. You don't need to bring along anything else.
* Turn-by-turn directions
Good!
--Again, yes, they are.
Basically: good! But nothing I haven't seen before. Most likely, will be overpriced compared to competition.
Nothing to droll about.
--Basically, you have gone on and on about something you obviously know nothing about. If these specs are true, It will be huge. It's addressing problems of previous models and adding features. Can't really deny that.
why so jazzed about features that i have had on my phone years ago? i guess a glowing logo is a bigger deal to some than others.
FM sounds ridiculous, Apple never EVER put it anywhere, so why would they give people an opportunity to listen to free music on their devices? Especially now.
Editing video is the same thing. Apple didn't want people to shoot video on first two devices, because they don't want people to have a bad experience. So, how can they possible develop something convenient enough, to reach Apple's standards, to edit video on this tiny device?!
*it's just summarize of all rumors, nothing more.
Oh yeah, the glowing logo, also horsesh*t. And don't compare it to the way a mac book accomplishes it. The screen back light would be obstructed from the back cover by all of the phone between the two. Come to think of it, I don't believe the source on any of this.
@cocoviper
you don't know what opaque means, huh?
@RyanTV
There is absolutely no reason why MMS photo & video couldn't have been implemented from the start. Look at the G1 and Pre, they have MMS with no issues. Unfortunately the only reason why Apple even put in MMS was because competition forced them otherwise they would have kept using the horrible viewmymessages website.
Everything else I wholeheartedly agree even though I am not a fan of Apple (I do enjoy my only Apple product which is an iPhone =) )
hopefully the new iPhone has an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU core and PowerVR SGX graphics! The Cortex-A8 core is twice as fast as ARM11 at the same mhz, is run at 600mhz to 1000mhz, and because its made on either 65nm or 45nm it should use less power than the existing ARM11 in the iPhone. PowerVR SGX is similar.. twice the performance as the MBX lite in the current iPhone, and in the same power envelope.
To all those people that cant believe how the logo could be lit without draining battery..
"PCB, Battery in the way" blar blar blar..
Wow, I had no idea you knew the internal makeup of the new iphone before its released?!
cocoviper, mirrors? lol, how about a simple small hole in the PCB hummm?
I know crazy difficult to achieve. Keep your minds open people.
Besides this i doubt if Apple would do this.. seems a bit ott
@ Dan - It says FM transmitter, not receiver. But still not likely in my mind.
@Shinigami
I'm no Apple fan either. I have only bought one Apple product in my life. Thats the iPod touch 1st gen. It is by far the most interesting and well made product I have had. Hold it in your hands. Spend some time with it. I'm pretty sure you would be impressed with it. It simply works well and the touch screen is perfection.
I am seriously considering this next gen iPhone to replace my Nokia N95. I still need to fin out, how to transfer my musig though.
Mythbuster:
1) OLEDs do not use less power than LCDs, unless they're showing a black screen. Then they're better. But I'd guess that's not what you're showing.
2) OLEDs do not have 1,000,000,000,000:1 contrast ratios unless you're in a 100% dark room which, again, I'm guessing you're not. In normal daylight conditions, they have a lower contrast ratio than LCDs.
The Pre hasn't been launched and already it's as good as dead. Nobody in their right freakin' mind would be buying a Pre if they have a chance of owning an iPhone. Maybe a masochist or a natural born loser would, but even that's a stretch.
The iPhone is getting features that supposedly all the other smartphones in the world already have and and maybe had for two years, yet when the iPhone goes on sale, Apple will manage to probably sell a couple of million of them in two days and in six months 10 million. Within six months another billion app downloads will be announced. Yeah Apple is copying all those other companies and their wonderfully fully equipped handset and basically will be reinventing the wheel at the expense of Nokia, RIM, Palm, Motorola, HTC, LG. Who gives a crap if those other companies did it first. The iPhone will be the first to do it RIGHT.
I think it's already time for those advanced handset competitor companies to start their copiers. They're gonna be heading back to the future.
@FNuky
Actually OLED screens do use less power than LCD's because they don't require a constant back light. Look it up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED
Shinigami is the most suitable name for the god to preside over the rest of the handset industry after the iPhone is released. There is going to be such mass confusion in the industry, they're not going to know what to do. They'll probably just head back to their drawing boards after weeping for a while.
After the remaining developers from the other mobile platforms say the hell with them and start heading for the iPhone platform, the rest of the industry's fate will be sealed. Any developer with any talent at all will jump at the chance to become a millionaire overnight and that will only be possible by getting a hit on the iPhone /iPod platform. I can just see those dollar signs dancing in developers and advertisers heads.
Banzai! Banzai! Banzai! Apple.
A question for all the cool dudes.
Why is there no microsd slot? You can get 16 gb for $50. So, you could theoretically buy the lower version and get the same storage for only $50 more.
Wait, I guess I answered my own question...
Its kinda dumb , IMO, to pay $100 extra for a flash chip. Yes, I know that the chip will be better/faster than a microsd card, but who cares?
So. I'm just throwing my hat in the ring here as an Apple fan and recently, a Palm fanboy (previously just a fan). Much like most Apple product owners, I love my stuff. But I am still looking forward to the Pre just a little bit more. I have a bit of a predicament since my contract with Sprint doesn't expire till November, and I don't want to pay the 549 for the Pre without incentives.
This gives me the option to switch to the next gen iPhone next month, or baby my Centro for a few months. The specs for the iphone are nothing game changing, but welcome none-the-less. What I think is going to happen I wait until November regardless, and let them iron out the bugs of both phones.
I am around iPhones every single day, and have an iPod touch. One way or another, I'm going to purge my devices into a single music playing, call receiving, internet browsing, tetris (or rip off) running time consumer, and the only thing the iPhone has on the Pre is the user base and software base. But the Palm fanboy-ness in me loves the facebook and social integration of the pre. They are very comparable phones and I think they are so close that only a side by side comparison is going to sway me one way or another.
@ cocoviper
you don't need mirrors to direct light... the have fiber optics for that. They could easily run a fiberoptic from the OLED to the back, and it wouldn't even need to run perpendicular into the back of the logo--if they used the right material the light would disperse.
"But I am still looking forward to the Pre just a little bit more"
I just can't get excited about an OS that is basically just a glorified web browser.
@ Samboini... if it's anything like the logo on the back of laptop screens (by apple, or any other company that does the glowing logo thing) it isn't an option to turn it off, and it doesn't drain battery, because the glow is simply a hole in the case that allows the backlight from the screen to escape.
@RyanTV
I appreciate you taking the time to reply back, but I don't think you read MY post, you read Shinigami's and replied to it the same as I did.
Also, you come off as a smug bitch in your post, maybe take some forum etiquette classes before re-commenting?
Oh well, I guess it's not everyday you get a good dose of fail, today is yours.
LMAO. That's it? OLED and a glowing logo? Welp, that oughta keep the fanboys happy. Have fun with your 2006 hypePhone technology.
Isn't it Sad to see people already arguing about something not even official - some are either bashing apple for stupid decisions or applauding them for adding something.. ridiculous. my comment is just sharing what I would like to have in my iPhone 4G, let's call it the iPhone HD.
My perfect phone (maybe not yours, but perfect for me) is an iPhone, with a full/flush screen on the top.. no buttons, just a screen. a nice high resolution screen. it would have 32Gb of space, lots of ram, a 3.2 or 5MP camera with a glass autofocus lens that can shoot 30fps @ 720p video, without lags or distortions (h264). It could even be a bit larger for better battery life and bigger screen.. I'd like the back to be as resistant as the front of it also...
of course it would also do Push, MMS, Background Apping, would cure cancer and would smell like apple pie.
That's my wishlist...
As always...
!!! Its about the software stupid !!!
lol, the bitches at APPLE finally gave in and included an FM radio.. DWL
wonder how jobs is handling this.
