"Mole" says UMD-less PSP-Go! is on for E3, slimmer PS3 to follow
Ready for this? No, seriously -- are you strapped in? The same reliable "mole" that enabled ArsTechnica to correctly call the Resident Evil 5 Xbox 360 bundle and the new Halo 3 / Fable 2 bundle (among other items) has come forward with convincing evidence that a UMD-less PSP is indeed on the table for an E3 launch. Truthfully, we'd be more shocked if Sony didn't announce such a product, with the download-only release of Patapon 2 being a telltale sign that something was up. We're told that the so-called PSP-Go! will be debuting in LA next week, but that a slimmer, trimmer PlayStation 3 likely won't. The reason? Sony's waiting for its current stock of PS3 consoles to dwindle, after which it intends to refill channel partners with the physically fit edition that we peeked just over a week ago. We'll be live at the expo to give the low-down on this as it happens, but suffice it to say, buying a bulky PS3 over the next few months will likely morph into a regrettable decision.

YES!
xcrunk @ May 28th 2009 9:42AM
Meh, I'll keep my 20GB PS3, which has full BC and has been upgraded to 250GB. BTW, the 250GB drive was less than an official XBOX 360 120GB drive. Zing!

"buying a bulky PS3 over the next few months will likely morph into a regrettable decision"
Thus proving this rumor as false
Cellien @ May 28th 2009 12:10PM
^ How so? Just because you will regret making a purchase makes it a false rumor? Have you EVER bought a console, especially a Nintendo handheld? Happens all the damn time. New skus, better skus, makes you want to upgrade.
Jordan @ May 28th 2009 4:56PM
I'm really concerned about the "trimming" part. I really hate it when Sony cut some of the hardware off the original 60gb PS3. Though I welcome price cuts, I don't want a more stripped down slim PS3.
davedrastic @ May 28th 2009 9:23AM
Fuckamoly. PS3 Slim. Nice one Sony.
Prince Ali @ May 28th 2009 11:55AM
How about a cheaper ps3 instead? Bring it down to 300 and Sony might start attracting gamers.
Tristan King @ May 28th 2009 9:24AM
I was starting to think the PS3 slim was a fake when there were some new bundles with the old PS3.
It just wasn't enough time between now and E3, but it is on the way people!!
And hopefully cheaper too!
Not that I really care, cause I already own one.
tehslax @ May 28th 2009 9:28AM
Great now you can carry your ps3 to ur friends house. What else does it offer? I do not regret owning the bulky ps3XD
Eddie @ May 28th 2009 9:28AM
But why rebrand with a godawful logo!? That's rubbish!
And buying a slimmer playstation is always more regrettable because they alwaysh have compatibility issues.
Duke @ May 28th 2009 9:41AM
I don't think we have any verification still that that logo is real or verified for the US.
Agent .25i @ May 28th 2009 12:00PM
You couldn't fool us for long. I've always known Eddie, that you are in fact, Sir Thomas Sean Connery.

Developers don't like the PSP. I tried to love it so much, buying the first, then the Star Wars version, but I usually had nothing to play. I'm over the PSP unless it has two analog sticks and a ton of great games.
JayVe @ May 28th 2009 9:39AM
I'm right there with you. It looks like the world has given up on the Playstation this generation. Releasing a PSP Go and PS3 slim is the wrong answer. These systems need compelling reasons to own them... such as more unique software. They don't need hardware refreshes... but Sony only seems capable about thinking hardware... and not the whole experience. :(
trickards @ May 28th 2009 9:49AM
I have to disagree, I think the 'whole experience' is much more complete on the PS3 than the others, especially the Wii. I have had great dissapointment with the number of good titles for the Wii - I think at £179 it is an expensive novelty that wears off fast.
y3k.nik @ May 28th 2009 9:28AM
So, does that mean I will have to start thinking about selling my PS3 for the slimmer one?
I might consider it, if the slim had more than 2 USB ports and if I can install my 500gb hdd on it.
dafuzzjr @ May 28th 2009 9:30AM
While that may sound nice, what about all the games for PSP that are UMD only so far? Will they have a PSN redemtpion system, or are we expected to buy digital copies of the same games we bought?
curtisrutland @ May 28th 2009 9:55AM
You could just keep playing them in your old PSP.
Max @ May 28th 2009 10:54AM
No. That's a good point. I don't own a PSP and if I buy a PSP Go, all I have access to is the future library? None of the existing games?
Themonsteraria @ May 28th 2009 9:31AM
Sweetness. Can we hope for an OLED screen also?
xcrunk @ May 28th 2009 9:45AM
That would rule....OLED. OMG!
Take a look at the new OLED Walkman from Sony, does it have the same resolution as a PSP?
I still can't see it though, the inclusion of memory comes at a cost, and adding OLED to that would make the price soar even more. We are talking about a device that rings up at $169 currently. Though I think the PSP GO! will come in at $199, if not $249, like the original did when first launched.
limestallc @ May 28th 2009 9:34AM
in case no one else noticed it looks like that slim ps3 comes with a 120GB HDD
Duke @ May 28th 2009 9:42AM
...I think we saw the same image you did attached to this story.
C lawrence @ May 28th 2009 9:38AM
lol no one saw that 2 120GB stickers
jwalker983 @ May 28th 2009 10:34AM
the cardboard is laid out flat, but those stickers are on the front and side of the box.
Snake Robot Podium @ May 28th 2009 9:42AM
E3 "launch"? Does that mean an announcement at E3, or an Apple-like "it's on sale right now!"?
Mat Murray @ May 28th 2009 9:47AM
"...buying a bulky PS3 over the next few months will likely morph into a regrettable decision".
Nice one Sony, I bet this rumour (if true) is gonna do you the world of good. "Hey everyone, please slow your PS3 buying down, a new one will be out in a few months!"
They'd better get this out. Quick.
Galley @ May 28th 2009 10:00AM
Sweet! Perhaps there will be a ton of 60GB "fatties" on eBay from those folks upgrading to the PS3 slim. I gotta have BC and SACD support.
fistpittingnork @ May 28th 2009 10:11AM
I'm happy with my 80 GB -> 500 GB bulky PS3 with 4 USB ports, what is Sony thinking only pushing out 2 now?
Jamus @ May 28th 2009 10:22AM
Screw thinner, give me bulky but cheaper!
Viewtiful Jason2 @ May 28th 2009 10:30AM
If it doesn't have the features dropped from the 60GB (e.g. Card Readers, 4 USBs, full PS2 BC), then they won't even convince me to trade in my old 80GB.
Duke @ May 28th 2009 10:32AM
Why is it that the losers who make such unfounded comments about something sucking or being lame always do so in the same weak ass way? All caps, saying Ahh ha ha, using fake works like "Fack" because you're too young to swear or something.
In advance please keep this in mind - we know you're a moron as soon as you begin typing, so save us all the trouble of having to down vote you and keep your mouth shut to start.
Extinction @ May 28th 2009 10:37AM
"Developers don't like the PSP."
Developers love PSP.
Problem is publishers love DS's sales.
Problem is, developers make fun. Publishers make money. And money wins out
dhytspam @ May 28th 2009 12:24PM
WTF are you talking about?!
Why do you think there are "DS Sales" then?
I don't even know what "Developers make fun" is.
Fun games on a system claims people, then Pubs AND Devs see the audience as bigger and wider creating more and more games for the system. The audience is varied because it has players of many different ages and interests. It's a snowball effect.

If the PS3 is going on a diet, leave on some love handles and put back the PS2 compatibility.
Dice @ May 28th 2009 3:22PM
i need two things for me to even consider switching to a slim
A: Full Ps2 BC
B: 2.5in SATA compatible so i can swap my 320g hard drive strait into it from my fatty
and C: a little less power consupmtion would be nice too
t @ May 29th 2009 5:09AM
Blah blah blah!!
Sony has had these plans in the cooker for years. It is part and parcel to their business model. Look back at the many faces of the Walkmen from time gone by.
pika2000 @ May 28th 2009 3:40PM
Sony better offer somekind of free/discounted deal for the download ver of PSP games for people that already have a UMD versions of them.
josiahcampbellperson @ May 28th 2009 5:29PM
Playstation has disappointed me. I got a PS2, the PS3 comes out an costs more.. So I get a wii. Then I get a psp to slowly replace my DS lite, and eventually I trade in both for a DSi. The only way sony will get me back is with cheaper prices and faster download times.
Dice @ May 28th 2009 6:49PM
ya i wouldnt mind a N router compatible ps3
ZeroCorpse @ May 28th 2009 7:54PM
If the position it properly, the PSP Go could be a contender against the Zune/iPod/Zen devices. The only thing making me regret trying to use it as a main PMP was the ridiculous size of it. If they correct that, I might be interested.
