Every few weeks or so it feels like we're being formally introduced to yet another
MSI laptop, and today we've the pleasure of greeting a pair. Up first is the gaming-centric GT729 (shown left), which rolls in with 3GB of RAM, a Core 2 Duo processor, WiFi, 17-inch LCD, ATI's 1GB Mobility Radeon HD 4850 GPU, a 4.1 audio system (yes, it has a "subwoofer"), 2 megapixel webcam, optional Bluetooth, HDMI / VGA outputs, three USB 2.0 sockets, a 4-in-1 card reader, audio in / out, an ExpressCard slot, up to 500GB of HDD space, a Blu-ray drive and your choice between a 6- or 9-cell battery (take the latter, just sayin'). The 17-inch EX723 (shown right) doesn't differ much, though it does tone things down a bit with a GeForce G110M graphics set and a hard drive maximum of 320GB. Per usual, MSI's steering clear of detailing things such as price and release, so hold tight if you've found yourself drawn.

I want one. In red. With Windows 7.
Thanks,
Blurmagic.
ill take two
I must say I'm very impressed with the MSI GT729.... how much does it cost???
That is the real question. I would also like to know.
wow that looks pretty. Ya I'd go for windows 7
I have found myself "drawn." Ever since MSI debuted the Mobility Radeon HD 4850, I wanted to punch the idiot in charge that decided that it should only carry 512 MB of VRAM. In a laptop. Where you basically can't ever upgrade the graphics. Sure, 512 MB is enough.
MSI, please encourage that idiot to commit seppuku.
It doesn't say which Core 2 Dual processor it is (1.6Gz or 3.0Gz). The best thing about this laptop is the sound and speakers. Needs Bluetooth capability. It is going to be around $2500 so it's more economical to build a Dell 1525 like I did or get Dell XPS series for big gamers.

It won't reach 2500.
I'd say sub $2000 easy. Maybe even sub- $1500...
I have a MSI GX630-028US which my complaint is that the battery is extremely piss poor in lifetime. An hour and half if you're lucky on the lowest power settings. With all that power in the GT729, I don't expect the battery performance to be greater than my own laptop.
MSI is really pushing these model changes as if they mean something. The only difference between them is the video card, which is upgradable (I believe it's an MXM III slot). I bought a barebones GX720 a few months ago and built the system myself. The final system only cost me around $1k, and I got a P8600, 4GB ram, 320GB/7200rpm HD, and GF9600GTm/512MB. It runs Win7 RC flawlessly, no driver or software issues to speak of.
What is with their off-center track pads? I love my G50 but I always found it odd that they are a bit to the left.
This is because it's in line with the actual keyboard and not with the laptop itself. This way it doesn't interfere when you're typing.
I have the MSI GT 725 which is essentially the GT 729 but with DDR2 800 RAM and a 512MB Mobility 4850. Not sure if there will be a huge difference between the two performance wise, but I'm really happy with my 725. I got the C2D P9500 model which with the turbo mode OC's to 2.9GHZ and you can use ATI Overdrive on the graphics card aswell for even more of a boost.
Cost me £1000 over here and I think its great value for the spec, build and features, been playing the hell out of Empire: Total War on it recently; gets about 11k in 3dmark 06 and between 5k/6k in 3dmark vantage.
Just to add, when using the laptop for office apps, internet etc, I usually get around 2.5 hours on battery with the backlight between half and full.
in case of < $1402,30 (€1000), WANT.
Wow, these "announcements" are great and all MSI but how about you actually bring one of these things to market... GX623 anyone? Still waiting...
I'm wondering about the GX733 laptop that was supposed to come out. Back before I got my GX630 laptop, they made the announcement about it which I waited and waited until I really needed a laptop for school so I was forced to get the GX630 as a shoo-in and the good thing about it, it was cheap.
