Apple introducing cheaper iPhone on Monday?
There certainly seem to be a lot of people "familiar" with Apple's iPhone plans spouting off all over the place in these last few days before WWDC, and today they've chosen to whisper their sweet nothings to the Financial Times, which is reporting a cheaper iPhone will be announced on Monday at WWDC. Of course, that lines up with pretty much everything we've heard so far, including rumors of a 4GB iPhone model and cheaper AT&T plans, so it's not exactly a far-fetched rumor -- but then again, it's exactly what we'd say if we were just making stuff up. We'll just have to wait and see on Monday -- and from the looks of our Palm Pre poll, that's exactly what most of you are planning on doing.

This would be somewhat humorous if true...taking the sails out of the Pre.
It won't be that harmful to the Pre because it will be targeting the lower end of the market. The Pre is a higher end product and people who would pay for one would not want to have a lesser device. Also the functionality that I have seen from online screenshots and demos is way beyond any iPhone OS 3.0 capabilities. Even a more expensive iPhone would not manage to get the Pre's market (if introduced) because of the limited iPhone OS capabilities. No multiple applications running simultaneously, no cards, no universal search.
I thought universal search was coming in 3.0?
Besides, lets not talk about the pre's market until they get a little market share. At this point the iPhone as a little bit more than the Pre.
Pre still kicks much ass. OMG iphone is getting copy & paste and a COMPASS? Oh no!!
I know its a bit shameless but i just finished this app and wanted to share it with you...it helps you deal with sun and UV rays when being in the sun...
i hope you like it, would like to hear what you think
sunblock
Apples "Pre"emptive move! ROFL
The iPhone is so two years ago. A compass, video and copy & paste don't change that fact.
The app-store is what is revolutionary about the iPhone. Have you been watching commercials lately? Or even notice how every other company is kick starting its own version of the app store?
The video and compass does change up the game, to whatever extent developers will have in mind.
Doesn't copy/paste male into a 5yr old phone or something. Video makes it into a 3yr old phone.
Being able to use distant suns on a phone as it automatically shows u the night sky from where u are standing and which way u are facing in real time and then being able to click through to photos and info about the stars u see. That's a new phone.
>> "The iPhone is so two years ago."
For real.
Apple jumped into the phone market 2 years ago... and only sold 20,000,000 of them. And managed to get a large portion of the mobile web browser market. And continued to operate the largest online music store, in which you can purchase DRM-free songs from the phone.
Yeah... Apple is obsolete.
video and copy/paste doesn't "change the game", it means apple is slowly starting to catch up with what everyone else has had for over a decade.
and a compass? eh.
So good you spammed us twice!
Fuck off.
wow really? the word APPLE and CHEAP in the same sentence?
Don't worry. Just because its cheaper than the regular iPhone doesn't mean it's going to be cheap...
If cheaper iPhone is true
Will klll the pre , agree?
Quite amusing to see that the only way the iphone can compete with the new coolest smartphone is by being cheaper.
Hey Mark,
don't forget interactiveipho.....
ah shit I just can't do it.
Despite being a Sprint employee with free cell service I would be willing to buy an iPhone if the monthly charge was $50 (or less). I don't care about the initial cost of the phone as long as it's under $300, it's the monthly bill that I am concerned about. I don't need a lot of minutes, or data, or text messages, but a minimally sane amount of each. Say 300 minutes, 1gb data, and 100 text messages. If you can do that for $50 a month I am sold and I will show off the iPhone to all of my coworkers. I imagine more than a few converts after our entire branch - Network Operations, 6000 employees - has been transferred to Ericsson.
>> "I don't need a lot of minutes, or data, or text messages, but a minimally sane amount of each. Say 300 minutes, 1gb data, and 100 text messages. If you can do that for $50 a month I am sold"
I doubt Apple would make a smaller capacity version of the widely successful iPhone... not these days. Even though Apple probably wants to get the iPhone into more people's hands with an iPhone Nano or something... thus exposing them to the iTunes music and App Store... there's just one problem...
AT&T wants your monthly payments! AT&T wants $80+ a month from all iPhone users. While Apple makes pennies from music and apps... AT&T makes serious money from subscribers. I'm sure AT&T isn't gonna make a smaller data and minutes plan. It wouldn't be their style.
Because then you'd have people saying "I want the 32GB iPhone... but I want the Nano data plan." It would create chaos.
Hey guys, a cheaper iPhone means more App Store customers. Since Apple grabs 30% of revenue, it makes more sense for them to focus on getting more iPhones out of the door than try to make money out of selling iPhones.
One iPhone requires a specific amount of money to produce whereas one App Store account for some paid application requires less than one iPhone costs but generates much more revenue.
Get it!
Well I could care less about a camera, but other than that I don't see what features you could remove and still call it an iPhone.
Cheaper att plans would sure be nice, the iphone plan is insane its almost 100$ a month and I dont even have 3g in my area. So i don't get to utilize it.
They should let users choose to pay for edge or 3g
to clarify; a cheaper "$99" iPhone 4gig model?
And yet all of the reliable sources say that they will also be beefing up the storage capacities on their current offerings so that the $199 price is for 16gig, and the $299 price is 32 gig...
So you're claiming their portfolio would be rounded out by adding a 4gig iphone for $99.
Wouldnt it make more sense to keep the 8gig chipset, (or modify it slightly) move it down to $99, and then include the 16 and 32 gig phones? their lineup would be 8gb:$99, 16gb:$199, 32gb $299
I just don't see it making sense as part of a product line or portfolio - 4gb for 99 seems like a bit of a raw deal when you look at the other devices.
storage is cheap. 4gb is way too small. I think 8, 16 and 32gb.
I wrote Apple a while ago saying why don't they just make a Iphone with no 3G support. I just want to make calls and play media. I wouldn't mind wifi so I can browse the internet from a wifi spot. I don't want to pay 70 dollars a month for data. I would rather buy the phone and use it pre-paid. Ha Ha a Pre Iphone. Maybe Apple listened, I sure hope so.
I heard the new iPhone will be coming out next month
Well I just checked the AT&T upgrade page and saw something interesting. This morning, they were offering the usual 8GB for $199 and 16GB for $299, and the refurbs for $99 and $149 respectively. Just now, the 8GB refurb is not listed at all and the 16GB is listed but showing as "out of stock".
I've been planning on upgrading to the $99 refurb and just got the money to do so this afternoon as expected. Now I'm going to have to wait until after WWDC to see if I can still get one at that price. If not, I'll probably just move up to a BB Curve (I'm on a Pearl now and the keyboard is unbearable).
More flame bait. Can't we all just get along?
Man... forget Apple and AT&T! I have a stolen iPhone 3G on a 2G data plan and I still get 3G. Therefore, I didn't have to extend my contract nor do I have to pay an extra $15+ a month. And guess what... I plan on doin' the same with the next generation iPhone 3G. And before ya'll jump into conclusions: I didn't steal the iPhone 3G I brought it off the streets.
Good day...
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that I was one of the original early adapters! Yup, I paid $599 for my 8GB iPhone. The rest of ya'll stans hopped on the bandwagon when the phone became subsidize/famous.
In this web-crazy world, secrets are hard to keep. So far the big rumor for the new iPhone is a compass. What else will there be? We would have heard something more concrete by now.
@ Paul a. Chapel
Your perception of what studios use is highly biased and doesn't support reality in any way. Studios use what works for the job. This goes for hardware and software. Most large studios use Windows, OSX and Linux. Large studios tend to love Linux as it was a perfect switch from IRIX after SGI gave up on it for Linux.
Shake. Yes, it's still being used by a lot of studios but it's being phased out at a fast pace by Nuke. Also, a lot of larger studios are using Shake on Linux. Again, Nuke will eventually dominate the market based on the fact that Shake is no longer developed or supported by crapple. While most larger studios bought into the Shake SDK, it's already running its course.
I work at a studio where we use all 3 (mac, win, linux) and for 3D and compositing apps, Linux and Windows are faster than OSX. It's only a slight speed increase, but it's sizeable enough, coupled with the fact that a MacPro is still more expensive than a PC, a PC is still the way to go, whether you run Linux or Windows.
So before you go all "I get hardons for everything Mac", think about what you're typing or else you'll look like every other fanboy on here, including Darren Murph.
A cheaper iPhone would be really devastating for Palm, since iPhone has already matured and it is the only competitor to the WebOS.
The iPhone 3G was also going to be "Twice as fast, for half the price". When it turned out to be even expensivier... Pardon my anglais... (I'm not French either)
This iPhone (if it's really comming) should be the same. I'm sitting and wainting to see. I don't have an iPhone, yet, cause i don't fell like selling my house to afford it (exagerating). I WON'T pay €700 to make phone calls, when i can just get another phone who does them for €25... Cause that's what the second iPhone costs where i live, and the other one was a bit cheaer. So if they keep this line of making 'cheaper' iPhones, the next one should be around €800.
I guess i'll have to wait until they make an extremelly overpriced iPhone, so that maybe i can afford it...
lol
I really hope they reduce the prices here in India. The iPhone sells for $650-$700 here (locked but no monthly commitment).
4GB is way too small. I think just reducing AT&T's monthly plan will draw more customers!
^Couldn't care less.
Could care less means that you haven't reached the bottom of your caring potential.
It looks like the screenshots are jailbroken, look at the battery meter and the carrier name.
