It's getting close, people -- the Palm Pre officially
goes on sale for Sprint Premiere customers tonight at invite-only launch parties around the country, while the rest of us can get in on the action bright and early
tomorrow morning at 8AM. Of course, Palm and Sprint have been trying to
spin the launch as a bit more low-key than the usual Apple hysteria, and so far it looks like things are pretty quiet -- actually, we haven't heard a peep about lines anywhere so far, which seems a little strange to us. So what's going on out there? Anyone camping out tonight? Setting multiple alarms? Drinking all night and getting to
Best Buy with no pants on? Or is everyone waiting for
Monday? Sound off!

What is it with this trend of people being "sorry" for someone owning, or in this case wanting to own, a particle gadget? "Sorry Sony, the NXE is better." "Sorry Apple, Dells are cheaper." Palm doesnt need to advertise. once people know the Pre can mutitasks and have Flash... they'll know what a real phone is.
Why would anyone bother to wait in line for a handset that there's hardly any inventory for. I'd think in any major city, there'd be about 20 units to go around, tops. They didn't even have enough Pres to give to the 100 or so guests for the special Pre before-launch affair today in New York. They have to wait awhile to get more in stock. This is absurd. You can wait on line, but there really isn't much point. The stores should just give out numbers to the first five people and tell the rest to go home and come back in a couple of weeks.

Actually, my Safari browser has yet to crash since I bought my iPhone eight months ago. I don't know if it's just me, but I think you're doing something wrong if your browser keeps crashing (dirty sites, much?). And yes, it is actually possible to run background apps on the iPhone. Of course, you'll need to jailbreak it but yeah, the possibility is there. I personally don't need it, but if you do, the iPhone does it for you. And I believe that's the whole point.
That doesn't mean the Pre sucks, it might actually be better than the iPhone. Despite its quality, it'll probably never match the iPhone saleswise. The iPhone is concidered by many as a fashion item, rather than a good smartphone (although in my opinion it does more than a great job at being a smartphone as well). It's sort of the same as the iPod, for all these years there have been tons of mediaplayers better than the iPod in every way, but the iPod is mostly concidered as "cool". That's probably Quantumphysics' point and I think he's right.
One last note, I just couldn't help it: without the iPhone we'd never have known about any touchscreen smartphone, let alone the Palm Pre.

Anyway, i havent seen a single Pre ad ANYWHERE.
I'm wondering if tech people are responsible for majority of sales, they are not. All my friends talk about that damn Storm which turned out to be terrible, until I show them the BOLD OR CURVE or the upcoming Onyx. But face it there no way to have the latest and greatest no more, because next week something more popular will come out.
Me personally I think when someone pulls out a gorgeous Omnia HD, around people with ther fugly Sprint Pre or Ipod with call making capabilities, and camera, that it might just get stolen.
Omnia HD, is setting trends with that damn screen, and multimedia phones will sell more, unless the general public decides it needs a smartphone to do shit they never knew they could do already on their computers or laptops.

I have sprint. I am eligible for an upgrade. I'm still not sure about it though. I want to see what the new iphone has got. If its oled w/multitasking, it will be mighty hard to resist, even though the plan is much more expensive than sprint. Last week, I was a lock to buy the pre. Now, I'm not so sure, and therefore, I probably wont by buying it tomorrow, probably because i may change my mind at the last minute ;)
Why not wait till monday and see if the new iPhone is interresting...

Yeah, as much of a Windows person I am (personal preference tyvm), and even the fact that i'm not under the SJDF, I'm waiting to see what iPhone brings to the table on Monday.
Price and contract pricing already give the Pre a big head start,
and Synergy / WebOS put it over the top (atm)
I'm wondering how much Apple will steal from WebOS for their new iPhone?
If it's not outrageously expensive it'll be interesting to make that choice.

Have you looked at the Pre UI? Did you notice the capacitive, multi-touch screen? How about the finger-gesture controlled interface?
Palm's team is basically run by ex-apple engineers now. They poached many of the employees and design guys who worked on the iPod.
In the end however, I hope the Pre does great and forces Apple to step up their game.

Two things holding me back:
-not giving up my existing plan (though I'm certain I can get past this with 30 minutes or so of haggling....did the same thing when I went from vision to power vision)
-No Public SDK. I was all excited about the iPhone when it was first announced too, but really, I'm not going to buy a phone I can't code for. (by the time the sdk finally dropped in non-NDA form to the general public, I had ceased to be a potential customer....you listening, palm?)

Something you should know:
SERO is officially canceled. When your contract expires, that is it. We're not going to be able to upgrade to ANY phone on our SERO plan.
If you're just riding out the ~$35/mo, that's fine. If you did choose to upgrade, you would still be paying less than you would on any other carrier, apples-to-apples (plus right now turn-by-turn GPS costs extra on SERO, so you're getting more, too, rather than just paying an extra $25/30 for the same plan).
It really just comes down to whether or not you think owning the Pre > the extra $25/30 a month you'll be saving by sticking with your old phone and SERO.
Is there actually a less-compelling argument for or against a phone than the plan it's on?

2) Drop TouchFlo3D and get SPB Mobile Shell 3.
Do these two things and you will transform your phone.

US TMobile customer here, and I've already gotten my cupcake update, I tried even telling engadget but they haven't posted an article.
i was fortunate enough that they released dev1 update like 4 weeks ago. it was quite tasty. i wouldn't have survived any more of a wait, truly
The choices are basically:
1. I'm getting a Pre.
2. I'm waiting for new IPhone.
or
3. I don't care.
The only important ones to the poller are the 1 and 2 choices. The fact that there are 4 ways to vote "I'm getting a Pre" only serves to bolster the short attention span viewer that reviews the poll results and sees that the "I'm waiting for the new iPhone" vote total is a much bigger number.
Personally, I'm in the "I'm under contract until December, so i'll take nothing for $200 Alex."

oooooohhhh I got you! Kidding guys/ gals! :) I won't be getting a Pre. Either a 16GB or 32GB iPhone or bust. The Pre does not scream 'buy me' and I am not sure why. It sounds like a great phone after reading the reviews. Maybe too 'high end' for my needs.... Plus, I don't have $200 right now.
Unless you're buying it from Best Buy, (which by the looks of their laughable stock levels, won't be very many of you) you're gonna need $300+ big ones at the counter and wait for Palm to send your $100 back when they get around to it.
It absolutely blows me away they couldn't get the price point down to $200 during an economy like this. Nothing pisses people off more than playing games with rebates.

The Pre seems awesome, and I'd love to get one. Heck I'm even a very happy sprint customer eligible for $150 off of a new phone. BUT, I'm on a Sprint SERO plan, and unless I can get the phone without having to get a new plan, no way... Like I said the Pre seems like a great phone and all, but nothing beats my sprint SERO plan, I'm not leaving it until they kick me off; I'll just have to put up with my Mogul for now...
$30 month for all the minutes I need plus I get unlimited text messages and unlimited data? Where else am I going to get that? The current "Deal" is twice as much, granted they throw in TV and Navigation but that isn't worth $720 (over two years) to me. That is why I don't have an iPhone either.
Finally, the BIG thing I like about the Pre is Synergy, and it seems like they might be working the bugs out of that for a little while anyways, I don't need to be the first one on the block...

I Love the Pre, and I mean Loooooooovvveee the Pre. The UI is absolutely gorgeous, better than the iPhones in fact (never thought I'd say that) but I won't be getting one for a few of reasons.
1. It's only 8GB of memory, thats way to small for me. At the moment I've got a 16GB iPhone 3G and I've only got about 2GB left, and thats with no movies on board either!
2. Love it or hate it (I love it) I use iTunes as my media library manager. For me it works perfectly and I don't want to take the risk of buying a Pre thinking I'm gonna get it to sync with iTunes only to find out that Apple has cut the umbilical cord.
3. This thing is version 1, and from the reviews I've read I've seen quite a few reports of the phone crashing and wiping out all your personal info. Backup or no backup, I'm not gonna take the risk.
When these issues are addressed I'll definitely jump on the Pre band wagon.
