Freescale netbook and Android-powered smartbook debut
We knew good and well that Freescale wouldn't let Qualcomm go and have all the fun with these newfangled smartbooks, and already we're seeing a few new devices powered by Freescale-branded semiconductors. In the video posted just after the break, the company's own Steve Sperle sat down to talk about a new Pegatron netbook (which handles 720p video playback with ease) as well as an Inventec "smartbook" which is just marginally larger than your average smartphone. In fact, we're rather impressed with the layout: a larger-than-average 4-inch display, a slideout QWERTY keyboard and Google's Android OS. Unfortunately, Mr. Sperle would only stick close to the "later this year" launch time frame that we'd already heard about, but so long as these smartbooks end up looking like overpowered smartphones, you can certainly consider our interest piqued.

Worst Interview Ever.
I agree.. I got dizzy.. and learned very little.
Did anyone else see the "Smart Book" crash? lol
Isn't that the architect from the matrix. :-)
Or the guy from Half-Life 2 that runs the tower. Take your pick.
Another iPhone wanabee and an iPhone OS wanabee. LOOOOOOL.
What a waste of time and money. Buy an iPhone, tards.
since when does an iphone have a slide out keyboard????
Looks like the screen is at least WVGA. The device itself really needs to be slimmed down, or at least rounded off.
Another iPhone troll. LOOOOOOL.
What a waste of time and effort. Go away, tard.
@mendoz30: Never. Physical keyboards were gone with the Dinosaurs extinction.
The window title on the ubuntu netbook says "720x480" :D
Well, at least we know there's no magic involved. @t 4:38 for those of you who couldn't wait that long.
You know, I think the one thing these manufacturers need to work on is getting the background image on the homescreen at the right resolution. Heck, even change it up for your press/Mr.Blurrycam shots. Put a custom background on there. But for crying out loud, get the resolution right so it doesn't look like a letterbox film.
Finally. Most current devices (G1, iPhone, Palm, etc.) are just about 30% too small for my likes. I've been wondering what happened to the good old devices with 4" and 5" screens.
This guy can't interview or use a camera to save his life!
i feel sea sick
Interesting products. The cameraman sucks.
This is the IAC S2, the first Android phone powered by Nvidia's TEGRA (that's why it runs the 720p video), coming in Q3 2009...
Too bad it's a brick and looks like a prototype... why? I hope the final product looks more attractive.
So let me get this straight ..
they create a device .. slap on Android and launch it within 5 minutes ?
Cos the fact that ALWAYS the Android wallpaper is too small for these screens of these netbooks and handtops and whatelese MID's
They cant get that right which looks to me they not spend more than 5 minutes on gettin this to work.
AND then they expect us Gadgeteers to fork out cash for that half baked crap ?
I aint a HTC fan but at least they actually put some effort into their devices .. be it WinMo or Android.
Do it right or not at all is my motto .. and don't announce something just to announce something ..
epic FAIL !
Lose the interviewer. It must cost a fortune to develop these products, and the professionals who are giving the interviews are world-class engineers and executives. Why interview them (along with this person, the woman who showed off the Acer notebook with e-ink/LED display) with someone who is so unprofessional (he starts of the interview with, "Who are you?!?"). If the interviewer is horrible, then the interviewee should decline--the publicity isn't worth the horrible interview and camera work. If this is a misguided attempt at in-house, promotion interviews, then whoever hatched the idea should have their heads roll. I would not hire the interviewer to take orders for a McDonald's in Taipei!
If you think you can do better, why don't you post your video interview links on Engadget and have us tell you how good you are?
I film like this in HD quality on http://techvideoblog.com
Nobody else filmed this interview at Computex about these products. If you think you can do better, perhaps you should go there next year.
Worlds most famous blogger Robert Scoble starts all his interviews with "Who are you?" and then he laughs. You don't like the style, you are not forced to watch.
TareX, that ain't powered by Nvidia Tegra. It is a Freescale MX51 processor you reject, so is that smartbook and the guy who is talking about Freescale's new prototypes - he's Freescale's marketing guy. I like the look of that smartphone (they can call it a 4" smartbook iff they want), isn't too big, considering it has a slide out qwerty.
Any Nvidia Tegra products are ony coming in Q4 by the way according to the latest interviews from Computex. They say their products will be pout before the Christmas holidays. Woo Hoo! Too late by 1 year IMO.
