Miyamoto "not worried at all" about Sony and Microsoft's motion controllers
Sony and Microsoft certainly turned the motion-sensing heat up on Nintendo at E3 last week, but it doesn't seem like Shigeru Miyamoto is all that concerned at the moment -- he just told the BBC that while he's "flattered" his competitors are "moving in the same direction," he's "not worried at all" about Project Natal or the Playstation motion controller because "they don't have the type of depth that we're able to provide with Wii Motion Plus." Snap. We don't know about that -- we certainly haven't been blown away by Motion Plus -- but we can see why Nintendo's not sweating it just yet: the Wii's a runaway hit and a pop-culture phenomenon, while Natal and the PSMC are still tech demos without announced ship dates or even final names. That said, it's clear that Microsoft and Sony don't intend to just cede this space to Mario and Co., so we'll see how Nintendo fights back -- we'll tell you right now that the Wii Vitality Sensor ain't gonna cut it.

Natal vs. Wii.
Apples and oranges, my friend.
Natal > PS Dildo > Wii-Wii Motion Plus
It's funny how the little things can tell you just how much of a fanboy someone is (referring to Max PL).
lol, I'm surprised how you guys have turned from gimmick haters to gimmick mastubators.
Nintendo probably has something prepared or hurry up and prepare something, but they will save it for their next console, since this is proof the others guys can do Nintendo's game and maybe even make it better. If Nintendo pulls another "blue ocean thing" Sony and Microsoft will have to upgrade mid-cycle again or half ass it like the six axis fiasco.
but i like oranges more than apples.
Mr14, yes i'll admit i'm an xbox fanboy but how can anyone not agree with my assessment?
"Apples and oranges, my friend." - Sisyphus
Yep. One blazed the trail, has been shipping for over 2 years now, and is still selling like gangbusters.
The other is a "we gotta get some of that too" product with no ship date and no price.
Apples and oranges indeed.

Only a dork quotes a fictional sci-fi TV show
yeah, cool people quote nonfictional sci-fi tv shows.
It's a real TV show.
@Aki
Cuz cool guys drive around a silver Honda Civics
No, I can pee further!
fictional science fiction! is that a double negative?
Not double negative, just redundant.

@ Ellianth
Neither a double negative nor redundant. As a fictional science fiction show, this show would be a non-real show about non-real science.
And once nintendo goes HD sony and microsoft will say the exact same thing. silly miyamoto
HD isn't just Sony and Microsoft, they didn't revolutionize the concept. Integrating high def with better hardware is slightly less complicated than integrating advanced motion controls which by the time the next consule generation comes out the big N will have been doing for more than 4 years. 3rd party developers will be sorry that they didnt jump on the waggle bandwagon and take it more seriously earlier when they could really help MSFT and Sony once their technology gets up to speed.
pardon me i figured most bloggers would get what i was trying to say, but for the slower of you i'll say it how you should have read it... HD (GAMING (DUH))
I got what you were trying to say the first time around, so apparently you didnt quite understand what I was saying...All the developers are bitching about the wii because it doesnt have the processing power and HD capabilites that the ps3 360s do, imlying that if the wii had such hardware specs they could easily develop games that looked as good as RE5, L4D, etc. So, assuming that they are correct, the next time around Nintendo will have HD (Gaming(DUH)) equal to that of the other two gaming giants developers will have the opportunity to produce such visually stunning games AND have motion controls on a platform that has been around long enough to completely understand it and take full advantage of it. Sony and MSFT developers already understand HD (Gaming(DUH)) but they don't have a grasp on motion controls, which wont happen even when the next generation is released.
What's with all the vitality sensor hate? We haven't a clue what Nintendo plans to do with it, so can we at least wait to see it in non-tech demo action before condeming it?
"We haven't a clue what Nintendo plans to do with it"
While it would be cool to wear during a game like F.E.A.R. I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say it's going to be used during its exercise games.
You could also use it for "emotion-based" gaming. For instance, a sudden jump in heart rate during gameplay could be taken as nervousness and alter how characters interact with you. Suddenly your emotions affect the outcome of the game, creating a much more immersive gameplay.
that would indeed be cool chuckles, Id much rather have some machine take my heartrate and make the game more personable than answering questions about my sex life. It's kind of hard to do that when it's no existant....
And while that sounds like a logical guess, Templarian, what about Eternal Darkness? Regardless of one's disposition towards Nintendo, they are an innovative company and don't always make the obvious choices.
truth serum plus vitality serum and reality show video games...
He is secretly s***ing bricks. That console is going to be dead. 360 and PS3 will win this war.
Sales-wise? No. My grandmother has a Wii. Quality-wise? Yes. Game Party 2, really?
I really don't think it's possible for Nintendo to lose. They have 50% of the current-gen home console market. Microsoft and Sony just fight for the scraps.
They've sold 50 Million of these things already, and we're mid-cycle right now. That's the very definition of an insurmountable lead.
And how much of the 50 million is sitting somewhere collecting dust or sold away by the buyers?
It doesn't matter where the Wii's sit at someone's home. It's the fact they were sold. Ninetendo made the money,.
Without game sales, console sales don't help that much. I have a Wii and a PS3. The Wii was fun for a while, but I haven't bought a new game for it since I bought my PS3. Yes, Nintendo has a great customer base, and they're making lots of money, but a lot of people who have tried the Wii and the HD consoles are spending more time/money with the HD consoles. Not everyone, but a lot.
I don't think that man has shat a brick in his life -- he always seems as cool as a cucumber.
And I'm sure he has enough money and/or job security to not care if Nintendo succeeds or not.
KJB,
They're in this for the money off of the software licensing not the hardware sales. There is much more profit in the software than the hardware. So yes if they're sitting around collecting dust then no residual license fees coming in.
@CtrlBurn:
Without game sales, console sales don't help Microsoft or Sony. Nintendo makes a nice hefty chunk on every console thanks to tech almost a decade old, circa game-cube era. The only high tech is in the controllers which Nintendo recovers thanks to a high retail price. All the games Nintendo does or doesn't sell is just all gravy.
The old line of thinking still applies to Sony and MS. They lose money on consoles so sales don't matter. They make up for it in inflaflated prices on software.
Nintendo is making money on all hardware. That means the Wii, Wiimotes, plastic mario kart shells. All of it. How many soccer moms do you think bought extra controllers for all her kids? MS and sony do peripherals too, but Nintendo is king there. On top of all that the 50 million consoles attract developers who buy liscences. They still get a hefty chunk from game sales.
Saleswise, yeah, Nintendo won this gen by a lot. It's kind of insane actually how badly they shut down MS and Sony. I still play my 360 more though.
@Templarian
Completely disagree with you on that. MS and Sony have to go into a new market and try to cope with it and re-invent it on their consoles. Nintendo on the other hand has the console that supports motion as well as software titles that do. Their only shortcoming is the image quality. Since Nintendo has had all this success in sales and profits and for a really long time, they must have developed something for the future or at least worked on ideas. It is a smart move for them to wait for the competition to announce their plans.
Now Nintendo only has to push a little forward. They can slightly improve on their controllers to be better than Sony's. Although MS's are still better, Xboxes are still aimed at the hardcore gamer and not someone's granma. Also very young children will still love the Wii more since it gives them ingame control that doesn't require them reading a manual or practicing key combinations that aren't already part of their muscle memory.
As for the hardware, Tegra anyone (just a thought). Well probably not Tegra but my point is here also Nintendo only needs to upgrade with something that is cheaply available nowadays. To come to the Xbox's level the Wii can add some graphics and will unlikely add Blueray since downloads are catching up. This is enough to get in a larger demographic than the one Nintendo covers today. To get a view of what hardware can be added to the Wii, take at look at low-end to mid-range notebooks that play games and consider you have better than that in the Wii because you won't be paying for an LCD screen, a battery + charger, and a plethora of ports and hardware standards.
Don't forget that the technology used in motion control is built in-house and this is where all the weight lifting happens. However graphics capabilities are bought from external sources. So internal engineering is way less. For now MS and Sony have to reinvent the wheel while Nintendo has to push forward incremental improvements. That's my opinion and they can have more in store.
He doesn't have to be worried until these are built in. Next generation will be very interesting.
Who cares? It's Apple's spotlight today!!
not after those lackluster announcements today.
screw Apple and their lame iPhone 3GS announcement
its still E3 Season....
Sony's Wand is comparable, but Natal...meh.
Still, they're both add-ons, unlike the WiiMote.
I think there is more to his comments that he can't say. Remember we are only two years away from their next console which he probably already knows the basics of it at this point. As they start to get games for Natal into the market - Nintendo will be close to releasing Wii 2 which will most likely use HD Stereoscopic technology - projecting graphics all around your room in 3D space. I would be willing to bet that is the direction Nintendo will go next - they have the motion sensing - the next logical step is to revolutionize the way we view the graphics in the same way they revolutionized how we use a remote control.
"projecting graphics all around your room in 3D space"...
Really? so in two years are we also gonna be flying around in our own personal spaceships and have crazy orgies with strange alien women?
@Neil
Hell Yeah
Oh the irony!
I remember the days where Microsoft and Sony fanboys were flaming the Wii because of its Motion Controls
...now its a different story..
I wonder how Nintendo can compete with Natal and Sony's Motion Controller though, Wii Motion Plus works differently...
Wii = Requires you to hold controllers
Natal = No controllers
PS3 Wand = 1:1 motion control without Motionplus addon.
Very very different.
@Aguiluz
Wii / Wii motion plus = Accelerometer Motion Control
Natal = 3D Full body Motion Control
PS3 Motion Controller = PS Eye Motion Control
All the same category - Motion Control
Definition: Allows you to control certain aspects by the use of motion and movement
what depth exactly is he even talking about - Wii Sports? lol I mean sure the dude has earned the respect of the game industry but when you're wrong, you're wrong. If Wii had focused on making HD games, they would've won this console war hands down, but when you're making crappy games, poor third party support, the only reason you're ahead is because it was cheapest.
