Sony and Microsoft certainly turned the motion-sensing heat up on Nintendo at
E3 last week, but it doesn't seem like Shigeru Miyamoto is all that concerned at the moment -- he just told the BBC that while he's "flattered" his competitors are "moving in the same direction," he's "not worried at all" about
Project Natal or the
Playstation motion controller because "they don't have the type of depth that we're able to provide with
Wii Motion Plus." Snap. We don't know about that -- we certainly haven't been blown away by Motion Plus -- but we can see why Nintendo's not sweating it just yet: the Wii's a runaway hit and a pop-culture phenomenon, while Natal and the PSMC are still tech demos without announced ship dates or even final names. That said, it's clear that
Microsoft and Sony don't intend to just cede this space to Mario and Co., so we'll see how Nintendo fights back -- we'll tell you right now that the
Wii Vitality Sensor ain't gonna cut it.

*cough* the 360 is the cheapest *cough*
When they originally went on sale, it was not the cheapest, that advantage helped the Wii a lot ... plus it's generic gameplay helps.
someone sounds a bit bitter against Nintendo eh?
"they would've won this console war hands down..."
uhh, last I checked, they have. As others have said, the *quality* of the consoles and respective games is completely subjective, however, while Nintendo makes a killing of the Wii (as well as the DSi), Sony ..not so much. http://kotaku.com/5018899/sony-lost-over-3-billion-to-ps3-cost-pricing-imbalance
As much as you may dislike Nintendo's "crappy games, poor third party support, etc.", there's no question, that Nintendo HAS won this generation's console war. And kudos to them for doing it.
but what about last generation, the gamecube was the cheapest??
and the 360's price had been dropped for a while now and there hardly has been any shift in sales...
Wii may have sold more colsole but they have not won any war.
The xbox 360 and PS3 are centring around being a hub for media as well as games (entertainment).
Come guys the Wii can't even play DVD's unless you hack it.
Yes, because HD graphics are the only thing that makes games deep.
"They would have won this console war"? You speak as if it's over. Seriously if it were over right now, they'd be on top just because of the sheer number of consoles they sold. And the 360 is the cheapest by a good $50 and even if you were to buy a 20gb HDD for the thing it'd be cheaper still. Price has nothing to do with it, they just marketed it to a huge audience.
The Wii is the most overrated console in gaming history. I still cannot understand the love this system gets. Yes, I own one.. my kid plays it. Additionally, I watch him play it, he mostly uses the controllers in a standard way, and very little motion. He still liked the Wavebird controller the best, and uses it when he can. As for me and the Wii - I have no desire whatsoever. I also have 2 xbox 360's and a PS3 - they get most of my attention. To each is own I guess.
yes they can project parts of the video game into your room. Some of it on screen and the rest in your room. Imagine it this way.....
you are play Madden. You are the QB about to hike the ball. You hike it in a shotgun stance - the ball comes flying out of the TV at you and the whole game is still on your TV but anything that comes past teh line of scrimmage toward you (a defensive end rushing the passer for example) will project into your room toward you - and the Dolby sound can simulate that noise toward you as well. That technology is already out there - its just pricey but by 2011 it will probably be affordable enough to put in mass market consoles. 3D Stereoscopic projection is the perfect compliment to motion sensing controllers and Nintendo knew this even back in 2006. THAT is the real reason why I think he is confident and not worried about Sony and MS - because what the Wii 2 already does will make even their 2010 motion sensing look old (just one year later).....
Dude I have the same setup. 2 360's (which my wife and I use to play Live), a wii and a 360. I moved to my new house August of last year. I haven't turned my wii on once. I am not saying wii is shit, but for thoes of us that grew up gaming, I really feel that I have out grown nintendo.
Every game I played on my wii the motion\wiimote control really felt tacked on. Mario Galaxy is a great example (pointing to collect stars? really?). That said, I am not really looking forward to the PS3 wand at all and only marginally interested in Natal. Mostly because it goes beyond waggle, but it will take a seriously killer app to get me to buy into it.
Agree 100%. I also have a kid who uses the Wii with the WaveBird. Most of the games he plays involve no motion controls whatsoever. I just put Homebrew to make the console more interesting (to me, at least).
Hopefully this will force Nintendo to put a proper graphics card in the wii 2 & to make proper adult games not more cartoon rubbish, proper Golf, Tennis, racing game & first person shooters.
More adult games please.
I hate puff pieces like this. Do you honestly expect Miyamoto to bad talk the Wii's motion controls or something? Waste of read. :(
This is so funny.
Agreed. There is enough room for major variations on this kind of user input and control.
You know whats gonna happen for the next gen consoles?? Nintendo is gonna switch back to traditional style gaming (no motion control gimmicky crap), while Sony and Microsoft are gonna try to "advance" their own controls, and then Nintendo is gonna be where the real gaming is at. ITS ALL A CONSPIRAAACCYYYYY!!!!
Nothing to be worry? it seems so far both of those motion sensor is age better than wii.
I own wii, 360 and ps3, wii is my least use and sold it. I had hdtv, wii is simple look like a crap because of the low resolution.
Itll still be the cheapest base console. 360 might be cheaper but not by much.
Nintendo will eventually reveal the Wii Motion Cock. You let it frolic amongst chickens and you get eggs in return.
an then Sony will introduce PS Motion DualCock 3, now with vibration
Ummm 360? No controllers. What... masturbates?
finally! some non apple news. After using the filter there has been no new stories :(
The difference between motion plus and Xbox 360 PS3 motion control is that motion plus releases tomorrow, the other's? well we may see some actual fully playable games designed for them next year at e3. As for the vitality sensor, I'll hold out on forming an opinion until I see more application. Remember in the original Metal Gear Solid when you had to take the diazipam to lower your heart rate before taking out the bad guy, now imagine if by using the biofeedback brought into the game from the vitality sensor you had to do that in real life... personally the opportunities seem somewhat exciting to me. A multi player fps in which your accuracy with your weapon of choice was more accurate if you were more calm?
Ok thats fine it makes you more calm so shooting would be more accurate..... But tell me how the hell are you supposed to hold a controller with that POS stuck on your finger...... Most games that could use something like this wont cause its too awkward for something like that.
Its another novelty for Wii fit like games nothing more.
Is funny how many people that about the project Natal as a fact when nobody knowns a launching date, a price and how well it will work.
May be the project natal will be launched on the market in 3 or 4 years more (and with MANY variations).Nintendo knowns it, so they have enough time to developer a Wii 2.0 with another novelty control.
Do you think he would admit that they are worried?
I think a lot of people are completely missing what has made wii the most successful gaming console this gen. They have tapped into a market that doesn't normally play or care about video games. People in old folks homes to very small children to stay-at-home moms trying to get into shape are all into the wii - People that would never otherwise buy a gaming console. When MS and Sony come out with their answer to the wii; it is going to make their consoles even that much more expensive than the wii; and frankly they are seemingly taking their prototypes in the direction that these "new gamers" don't care about. Bottom Line: N will dominate the sales, but MS and Sony will have a cooler product. Strange but true - N knows what they are doing.
In deed. Sony especially is on thin ice here. They have been building PS brand as a "lifestyle choice" for male population 18 to 30, i.e. they have been gearing their market approach to Jocks... now they will try to convince them to wave that 'wand' around?!? Gnah... not very likely. Gaming market is probably going to layer out into couple of specific target groups. Not all car companies cater to the same crowd, so why should all gaming companies.
Miyamoto isn't worried because he hasn't even figured out that people have HDTVs yet, much less interest in games that are built for more than 5 minute attention-spans.
Nintendo wins this one because even if Motion Plus doesn't catch on, EVERY WII OWNER intends to play games with their INCLUDED REMOTES with this 'motion technology'.
There are MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of SONY/MS owners out there without any such controller in their hot little hands.
Most times, add ons like this are only successfull for single purposed gameplay.
The LIGHT GUN used to come with all systems. This is why the Dreamcast Light gun did so well. Wii is the only system that allowed us to play LIKE we had a light gun on new tv's which can't work with lightguns AND gave us a whole new experience. Nintendo and Microsoft's solutions as yet still seem to lack 'all purposeness' to them.
They could both be the new SEGA CD. I just don't know. Music Instruments are going well but even those are GAME BRAND SPECIFIC.
SONY has PSEye and hasn't done much with it. Wonder how that compares to the camera MS has.
i want Miyamoto's shirt and wii hd but ill settle for the shirt
Not worried the way GM isn't, I mean wasn't, worried about the competition.
