Magellan intros 4.7-inch RoadMate 1475T PND for $299
Magellan's been on somewhat of a hiatus since being taken away by MiTAC, and while an unassuming FCC find has shown that it's still alive and well, we're thrilled to see the company's second actual product announcement in over half a year. The RoadMate 1475T is, for all intents and purposes, a refreshed RoadMate 1470 with a traffic receiver, though said traffic receiver works without any monthly fees. It features a 4.7-inch WQVGA anti-glare display, AAA TourBook listings, six million POIs, spoken street name guidance, highway lane assist, QuickSpell and NAVTEQ maps of the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Not too shabby for just $299, wouldn't you say?

too bad its not a garmin, but still cool
Indeed, I'm loving my Nuvi 760.
I'm also seeing a very strong consumer feeling AGAINST Magellan at my store.
Magellan appears to have sat on it's laurels and then dumped the division when it became apparent to folks using their products.
5.0 inch GPS that blows Magellan out of the water http://atxelectronics.net/Product.aspx?ProductID=113.
"traffic receiver works without any monthly fees"
that part i like. unfortunately i have had bad experiences with magellan gps units.
That's rather expensive, considering the specs. Here in Korea that would get you a high-res 7-inch model with DMB.
Pass. I've had two Magellan navi devices and both have been crash-prone pieces of garbage. The low-end TomTom and Garmin Nuvi devices I've had have proven far superior.
This unit probably isn't Mac compatible either. I have one of their older versions and while it gets me to where I want to go most of the time, there's no updates to the maps which is incredibly frustrating when where I want to go wasn't built several years ago.
I saw yesterday that TomTom was bringing their GPS software to the new iPhone 3GS (which I'll be upgrading to when it comes out). I'll go with TomTom and know that I'll get map updates as a Mac user.
You CAN hide the COSTCO icon, right? I suppose I don't drive enough to even have a GPS, but having a Costco icon front and center would really piss me off....
Yea, that's kinda random. Hopefully it's an option and you can opt to have it removed. Unless of course your freakin love Costco.
Compared to the $250 iRiver M7 NV Classic? Yes, shabby.
Wow. I can watch my cat get FAT in real time. No thanks.
Are GPS units really necessary these days? I mean have we all of a sudden lost the ability to reach our destinations without turn by turn directions? Has anyone had to return home simply because they couldn not find their destination? Am I missing something here?
Yes.
No, but what's the big deal about using one tool (GPS) over another (map)?
Yes.
Yes.
