New Toshiba Satellite laptops land in Europe

Toshiba's added a couple new Satellite laptops into the mix, with options for both the road warrior and the stay-at-home multimedia user. First, the A500: this guy sports a 16-inch, 16:9 format display (1366 x 768), a TV-tuner for both analog and digital DVB-T programming, Harman Kardon speakers and HDMI ports with REGZA LINK technology. Under the hood, this guy packs an Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB memory, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD GPU (up to 1GB DDR3 VRAM), and either a 500GB HDD or 64GB SSD. For those of you on the ultra-portable tip, the U500 is a 13.3-inch (16:10 format, 1280 x 800) ultraportable that weighs in at just under 4.5 pounds. With an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8 GB memory, a hard disk capacity of up to 500GB, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU, this bad boy is available in Brown Luxe, with either chrome or silver accents. Claimed battery life is over 3.5 hours. Both lappies feature a DVD Super Multi drive, wide format HD webcam, multi-touch trackpad, and the usual host of connectivity options (WLAN, Bluetooth 2.1, 5-in-1 media card slot). Both will be available in Europe sometime this July for €699 (approx. $975).

deadly expensive PC....
eh theyre not that bad . . . decent graphics cards in both of them. not cheap but not worth a deadly.
expensive? those seem like great specs for 975 bucks.
Crappy screen resolution however.
Besides the screen resolution I would say...ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING.
Yeah... the screen resolution is a real head scratcher.
The smaller one has the same rez as the new 13" Macbook Pro.
RAM is so cheap now...lacking RAM and V-cards aren't the way they make these laptops cheap...its cutting screen resolution.
I just got a 650 dollar laptop with 4gigs of fast ram, 250gig hdd, and a 9300 512mb video card. HDMI out that does full resolution, but the built in screen is only 1280 x 800....-_-
I'm not kidding. I consider the price expensive for a unit with such specs.
Is that an optical illusion or can you see the keyboard flex in the promo shot?
looks good.

you're kidding right? the only thing that still continues to amaze me in toshiba is their ability to come up with hideous designs.
Oh and the 16:10 format is a terrible idea. Some one forgot that computer screens are still mostly used for reading text and pages are still vertical and not horizontal ...
It's brown?
I see alot of HP in that design....
I was going to say the very same thing...
Looks pretty nice. I hope this shows up on this side of the pond, with a lower price of course. But it looks like this will be the summer update like last year with their "fusion" finish. Can't wait to see what happens, this looks like a winner.
1366 x 768? Why are screen resolutions going down on consumer laptops instead of up? That's crap.
I want more 13inch laptops with 1600x900 screens like the one in the VAIO Z :(
16" 1366 x 768 = FAIL
16" @ 1366x768 is the same pixel density as 15.4" @ 1280x800, which was the previous "mainstream" standard. It hasn't gotten better, but it hasn't really gotten worse either, and the 16" screen has slightly more real estate.
That isn't expensive. Hell My laptop Toshiba was £100 more than that 1.5 years ago at the best price available and this has double the hard drive space and 4 times the ram + HD port, better speakers and looks better than mine. Maybe I should tell the insurance that mine was stolen and get the A500 to replace it???
Who is seriously going to take the 64GB SSD orver the 500GB HDD?
My disk usage is only 80GB right now (and I am a pretty heavy computer user). If I didn't have iTunes video content and WoW installed(not even currently paying for membership), it would probably be something more like 30GB. I am sure there are plenty of people out there with very little disk usage and have no point in not using 90%+ of their hard-drive capacity.
Toshiba makes laptops? Huh, haven't heard about them in a while... why would that be? Oh right, because they don't make any I care about... no netbooks (that matter), no ULV ultralights (that I've heard of). Seriously, I think it hurts computer vendors to not participate in the hot markets.
Anyway, 16" at 1366x768 = FAIL. They're making 10" netbooks (Dell Mini 10 for example, or the HP 2140) with this resolution. While you might think its a big much for a 10.1" screen, its crazy low for a 16" netbook.
Do some google searching on Toshiba Mini-notebook (or netbook) and ultralights. You will see why you fail.
> Toshiba makes laptops? Huh, haven't heard about them in a while... why would that be?
Because you're ignorant? They're the no. 5 PC vendor in the world, and last quarter the fastest growing one from the top 5 too.
> Oh right, because they don't make any I care about... no netbooks (that matter)
They do make netbooks,
> , no ULV ultralights (that I've heard of).
and they also make ultralights with ULV processors.
> Seriously, I think it hurts computer vendors to not participate in the hot markets.
I think it hurts your credibility to start post about things you don't know and didn't take any effort to research.
ouch
The price 699€ includes 20% taxes. So, w/o taxes is 583€=820$.

Holyyy shit.
A 16" notebook with 1366x768 is not FAIL at all. It is the new standard. My HP HDX has this resolution. Sure, I could have opted for the 1080...
...wait why didn't I again?
1280 X 800 resolution for a 16 inch notebook is horrendous.
Stop being tightwad cheapskates and give us AT LEAST 1680 X 1050 for God's sake.
