Bad news for folks hoping a pre-order would save them from that yearly
camp out in front of their local Apple Store: iPhone 3G S pre-orders have sold out, and folks who are making new pre-orders are being told that they'll have to wait up to two weeks to get a phone. AT&T customers who do already have pre-orders in still have to line up at 7AM to nab a phone, but at least they've got a guaranteed slot if they show up, while the rest of the world will have to battle over remaining stock when Apple Stores open at 8AM and AT&T stores open to general customers at the same time. Looks like we might get a good riot or two out of this.
Update: AT&T just pinged us to clarify that it's still accepting pre-orders, but not for delivery on the 19th, and online pre-orders will be shipped directly to your home, so you actually don't have to hit up a store at all. But what fun is that?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
I love my Iphone 2g unlocked on tmobile network. I would consider upgrading if it wasn't on At&T since their plans are overpriced.
Definitely looking for a new phone but do not feel like I need to be gouge with rate plans just to get a phone I like.
I'd never consider a locked phone - even if it's as great as the iPhone. Travel too much & need to pop in new SIMs as I please.
So.. I'll wait and get an officially unlocked phone in August. Probably from Thailand.
Just a thought...
AT&T signs you up for a 2 year contract.
Apple brings out an update each year.
Why doesn't AT&T then offer a Lease system, where you pay a bit more, but once a year you can trade in your phone for the new model. Align up the two companies schedules so that the regular iPhone addicts get their new phone without the confusion and hassles.
It just seems like AT&T doesn't understand who their customers are and what they want.
"It just seems like AT&T doesn't understand who their customers are and what they want."
AT&T business plan: Rip off our customers as much as we can, but not so much that they'd switch to the (equally shitty) T-Mobile.
All the iPhone bashing does not change the fact that this is only apples 3rd attemt at a cellular phone. For what it is apple had did a fair job evolving their phone without leaving early adopters (1st gen) totally behind. And let's not forget that all the new great smart from companies that have been producing cell phones for over a decade have been heavily influenced by apples iphone (touch screen, apps, etc.). Stop hating on apple so much and give some thanks for the great products that are being built to compete with the iPhone. Holla back.
So because of one person in your class, you think you have the right to a) label every Apple user or Apple fan or even Apple admirer as having all the undesirable qualities as this person, and b) continually troll on Engadget, making immature and snide remarks about every Apple product, and against anyone who dares to suggest that their devices are not completely useless.
It sounds like this person in your class is a douche, and that's it! No more needs to be said - the fact they want or own an iPhone is irrelevant, because they would have been a douche before the iPhone was released, yeah? It wasn't like they "caught" doucheness from the iPhone, surely? I could just as easily blame their doucheness on their brand of jeans or the flavour of ice cream they prefer.
I'm sorry you have to deal with this person, but seriously, just live with it. Stop making us suffer - that won't change this person's behaviour at all.
Hi all,
I had two WinMo phone before the iPhone came out and and have a degree in CS, but those phones were crap. they did a lot of cool stuff , did everything I wanted, and made my life easier, but Windows on a phone does not work well. Last year friend let me borrow his iPhone for a few hours and I was hooked.
i am glad the newer phones are starting to look good and work better. I hope WinMo 6.5 or 7 finally catches up with what the iPhone has done in just a couple years.
I've done minor programming on both types of phones and I have to admit that WinMo's are far, far easier to program, so I'll give you WinMo fans that much.
say whatever you want, but this is the 3rd version of the iPhone and they still have lines going around the block when the new phone comes out. That is a lot of people willing to put down some serious cash for their phone. Hate them if you want, but I'm buying stock in the company.

InfoWorld reports that 43% of mobile HTML traffic is from the iPhone

They should spend more time online rather than in'line'!!!
Looks like there's gonna be some people getting their hands on these sooner than others.

Available from Wednesday!?
seriously...this photo is what's wrong with our economy!!! These people should be waiting in line for a job rather than spending MORE money that they don't have!!!
The woman in the front's reaction pretty much sums up mine to the undue amount of coverage this thing keeps getting. *yawn*
Well, this is the cycle of business.
The goal- Attract as many consumers as possible!
Nonetheless, the iPhone is a magnificent device, thus the majority of the phone's users are happy with the product.
Sadly, the Apple haters simply haven't gotten their hands on the device to fairly judge it.
I still wont buy one until AT&T makes a reasonable rate plan. I'd prefer a decently priced family plan, but i'd settle for just an individual plan with a good price. $30 data + $20 for messaging + voice minutes is crazy when you look at competitors rates. Not enough to make me switch just yet.
I wonder what the person under the green tarp in the article's picture was doing.
I love the analysis and speculation as well as the arguments on what the 3gs is or isnt...
Apple is releasing a hardware upgrade.. They are also releasing a major software upgrade. No other device has the quantity of apps nor the ease of installing and deleting them.
Yes some devices out there are prettier or may do a few things better - but nothing in general as a whole product does what iphone does.
Developers will continue to make apps so you know you'll have tons of things to do with your device.
No one forces you to upgrade.. I still see iphone 2g by the dozens on the subway. If you do, enjoy it.. if not enjoy whatever you got.
All this other chatter is nonsense.. Dont like it, get another phone.. Like it, have fun!
