Dell Latitude Z series laptop leaked, sized up in pictures
With nary another word in terms of specs or details, one lucky forum goer at NotebookReview has posted what looks to be pics of a new, as of yet unannounced Dell Latitude Z Series laptop. Not much to say at the moment, aside from the obvious Adamo influence, but we did spot a biometric fingerprint scanner, an oddly-placed ethernet port in the back, and Windows / Intel Centrino stickers. Earlier in the thread another person, albeit lacking any physical proof of owning one, chimed in to say it'd have a 15-inch matte screen, Core 2 Duo processor, webcam with facial recognition, and DisplayPort, with a scheduled release a week from today. Judging by the ports in the pics, it's definitely a thin one -- could we be seeing Dell finally dip its toes into the CULV market? With any luck, we'll be hearing more about this soon.

Its a Latitude with Attitude!
[+1] To spite the guy below you.
WOOWWWW! How revolutionary! Look at the design. Look at the craftsmanship!! The ingenuity!! WWWWOOOOOWWWWWW.
Whoop! one more ugly dull dell for the pile!
It looks like a really really really bad ripoff of a thinkpad.
Never mention this in the same sentence with 'Thinkpad' again, else the battery gods will smite you in your place. Well, next time you have your notebook in your lap, anyway.
I'm not going to be that fool who votes you up because you came up with an elementary rhyme.
Never gonna vote you up,
Never gonna vote you down
Never gonna run around and report you
LOL!
Nice one my friend, nice one.
Mods close the thread down. Dafrety just won.
I don't understand why the keyboard is so small on such an enormous laptop. You could easily fit a numpad into the wasted space.
A numeric keypad on the side would result in non-central typing, requiring the user to twist at the shoulder or waist.
I hate extended keyboards because of this fact...
An extended keyboard can be moved to the side, but this results in a slanted looking workspace.
You would appreciate the usefulness of a Num Pad if you are working with numbers on Excel, or other applications where you need to key in huge amount of numbers.
Numpad isnt necessary but they could have made the keys and the spacing between them bigger.
That's what 'fn lock' is for.
They gave this 15" laptop a netbook's keyboard.
That is one ugly laptop.
That's exactly what I thought! How can Dell make computers that are so ugly? This is almost Acer ugly...
Nice shirt, guy!
I've never thought my D630 was a good-looking laptop (utilitarian, I suppose), but compared to that...
And I really, really hope that's not a 15-inch model there, with such a tiny keyboard?
Nah, that's about right -- looks like pretty much the same space to the sides of the keyboard as my 15" MacBook Pro...
Maybe I'm just having an optical illusion because of the lighter-colored border.
Not to mention the wide LCD bezel...
Wow that keyboard looks really sleek.
Does anyone else think this laptop looks like it came out of the late 90's?
It looks like my friend's really old Inspiron.
Since when did they begin using the older Centrino stickers?
Makes one wonder how old this prototype is.
Too bad you're a iTard.
the keyboard lay out is really ugly
The inside of this laptop is best described as horrendous. Dell has put out some good industrial designs with the lateset Latitudes. I hope that this is only a prototype.
The keyboard looks nice I guess, but I'm never going to get one
It's a DELL
Yes, and it appears to have brought with it the old 4:3 ratio 1600 x 1200 screen it looks like... nice seeing you again after soo long, old bud.
The keyboard could have a number pad, at least. Other than that it isn't too bad though.
Vista Basic = FAIL
The design looks good but won't last.
i would get one if it werent for the stupid macbook like keyboard. those things are a joke to type on.
dell, function>style.
"i would get one if it werent for the stupid sony keyboard."
fixt for truthiness
Actually I love the keyboard on my sony.. its awesome!
I just wanted to fix the macbook part :p I to love the sony split-key keyboard :D
At least the keys look to be contoured, instead of uniformly flat.
No optical drive?
Anyone else see the little RFID tag marker to the right of the TrackPad?
Wireless USB?
Just a smart card thingy, I believe.
yes RFID smart card reader. All current latitudes have that feature.
I hope it has some more ports on that extended rear end. I don't wanna have another laptop that I need special VGA or DVI adapter plugs or that lacks an SD card port. The keyboard is intriguing, they could use that real state better and at least take those PgUp/PgDn keys from around the arrow keys. Also, where's the webcam?
Looks like an ultra-thin chassis so I'm thinking those funky 45 degree cuts in the back are an attached mini-dock, but who knows... Otherwise it's just a strangely wasteful bit of industrial design.
Um, look at the picture of the "rear" or the notebook. Do you notice the weird looking shape of the guy's skin where his thumb and index finger meet? It looks like someone went into paint and blacked something out right in that space.... odd? I think so. But I hope the rest is real! It looks sweet!
test comment
Congratulations, your test worked!
I'm going to do a down-ranking test, if you don't mind.
test failed
cheater!
Its actually not that bad looking. I am a little confused about that ethernet port, if they have some weird plastic sticking out the back of the laptop, that would ruin the looks for me. The vista basic sticker is kind of funny.
Looks to me like the ethernet is an external dongle. That's why it looks so weird in the guy's hand.
wow guess what guys, my new dell laptop is grey and rectangular, with a black keyboard too! designers worked overtime for this one...
The MacBook Pro also runs Windows.
wow. slide that keyboard over and put a keypad in there DELL.
No screen latch, no actual shot of the back, screen doesn't look like it has enough clearance to actually close. I get the feeling that something isn't quite right about this one.
This comment is a huge bag of Kurt
guess Dell stopped trying, party like it's 1983
i think i just threw up a little in my mouth.
uhhh ok, yea i did.
i thought dell realized no one likes an ugly computer... i guessed they forgot? see, when people bash apple and say they are overpriced, at least they can make a sub 1-inch notebook with enough power and classy looks. dell, on the other hand, may want to spend some more money on better quality materials so this plastic laptop doesn't fall apart after you drop it.
It's amazing that macs jumped in popularity once Apple switched to Intel which allowed users to install Windows or Linux. Amazing. At least their new mice are capable or right click, however poor and awkward it may feel.
I like the classic IBM style that the notebook has. It still isn't as sexy as my X61.
No, NO! It looks nothing like a Thinkpad! Argh!
A Thinkpad is classy and elegant, this is just bland.
My god.
I have never seen a laptop so ugly in years, not only that, but, why are the keys spaced so far apart? I mean, if they wanted to take up more space, put a number pad or /something/. Maybe a set of media-related buttons. I dunno. But that giant space just looks dumb. If I ever got one, I'd cover the space with a crapton of stickers or something.
I don't care how thin it is, that thing is fugly.
Call me when Dell comes back to 2009.
Dell won't have a facial recognition AND a fingerprint reader
Maybe the design is a revolutionary approach for bussines laptops: I think they made it so ugly and big that nobody wants to steal it. Good idea, and bad news for Kensinton
Looks good, lets hope the price is a little more affordable than the Adamo.
Very pretty laptop - an Adamo for the rest of us?
LOL @ this ugly piece
It's extremely top heavy. The LCD is heavier than the base\body. When I leaned it back in a standard viewing position of using the laptop on a desk\shelf while standing up, if I even slightly nudged it or the desk\shelf back, it would try and tip over backwards. Also, as you can tell from the pics, there is a TON of unused space between edge of the body and the keyboard on either side. They should've either made it a full keyboard with numpad, or they should've gone with a smaller screen. Also, I don't know what you guys are smoking.. but there is hardly ANY Adamo influence here, and certainly not any 'obvious' kind... unless you consider 'thin' to be a result of influence from the Adamo. I have an Adamo sitting right next to me and it looks and feels COMPLETELY different in practically EVERY way.
I have actually held a prototype of this. Very thin and the prototype had a kinda rubberized surface to it. I also believe I was told it has a 16" screen.
Dell brought one of those over to demo for us here at work and it is a very nice machine. No CDrom on it, but I am sure they will sell you one to go over USB. It was .8" thick, had USB, Display Port and eSATA ports on the side. Along with the Facial recognition system and fingerprint reader, it also had a interesting touch pad on the side of the screen. This allowed you to work the audio controls and you could configure shortcuts. The touch panel was actually the bezel of the screen if that makes since.
One of the reasons for the delay was due to a new charging system they are working on for it. They are working on a wireless charging pad system as an option.
