Sony working on a PSP non-game app store?
Now that Sony's committed itself to downloadable games with the PSP Go, it's only natural to wonder where that strategy might lead -- and the hot buzz says there's an "app store" of sorts due in August at Gamescom. The new section of the Playstation Store will supposedly impose a 100MB limit on content and set prices in the $2 - $6 range, but otherwise have no restrictions, meaning devs will be free -- and even encouraged -- to code up non-game apps as well. Of course, you'll still be able to snag other PSP titles from the other parts of the store, but if this actually happens it'll be interesting to see if Sony can channel some of the energy from the vibrant PSP homebrew scene into a more legit distribution channel. We'll keep an eye out.

SWEET!!
This looks like something Sony needs in order to make up for the underwhelming PSP Go.
underwhelming? how so? we still do not know all that there is to know about the Go. It might have a lot more overall power including a better web browser and it might have a more contemporary flash player. So far all we have heard is that it will have game sleep where you can suspend gameplay allowing utilization of other functions in the xmb (you may be able to visit a game faq/walkthrough for example or listen to some music without quitting a game) and the addition of a clock and calendar application that work when it is closed and open.
umm irshell
So basically its just a refresh. An improved UI and likely improved hardware. Most people were expecting to ATLEAST get another analog stick, and we all realized a touchscreen interface was probably pushing it, but cmon, it's 2009. If that isn't underwhelming, then I guess the iPhone 3GS isn't, either? Majority opinion begs to differ.
Hopefully this is just one of those schemes to see who is leaking information. I'm tired of all these leaks. Seriously, there's no mystery anymore in the gaming industry. I miss being "wowed" by a product or service announcement.
@enz1ey
The PSP Go is a PSP- not a PSP2. So it won't have a touchscreen or 2nd analog because it needs to be compatible with 40+ million PSPs out on the market. Its not a separate incompatible device.
Whenever they do release a PSP2 THEN we should demand those things, but as it stands the PSP Go is more like the PSone/Pstwo models; or like the DSi. A smaller and efficient update on a product. There is nothing wrong with that.
Then there shouldn't be such a big deal about the new iPhone.
What the hell I don't get why anybody wastes time bitching about why they hate the new iPhone or Pre or PSP anyways. It's not like their bitching is gonna change the product, and if they don't like it that much, don't buy it. Truth is, they aren't changing anybody's mind on whether or not they want to buy it.
But it DOES need a touchscreen!!!
Even if you're 100% never ever in 100 years going to use it for a game, even if you say "Game = PSP only", you STILL need the touchscreen.
Example.
You play an Movie, you close the PSP, you have no buttons.
You have no buttons.
You can't do jack.
You can't ff it, you can't rewind it, you can't flick through menus, you pretty much can't do anything.
Kinda needs a touchscreen, there.
Browser could do with one, too.
And all these apps.. They'd benefit from a touchscreen as well.
I'm not saying "OMG!WTF!TouchscreenGame!WOWSER!!"
I'm saying "Oh, come on!!! Even my cheap-ass £100 phone has a touchscreen.."
it does not need a touchscreen. If you want a DS buy a DS. If you want quality games buy a PSP
Why does everything catch an Apple reference? Seriously. "app store" You even quoted it. Could've just said... "Game Marketplace"
Anyways. Good move Sony. Too bad the PSP Go is gonna be overpriced anways.
Honestly do the price really surprise you ?
the current store sells "apps" including games and videos, this is just bad reporting
NEW FLASH: the store has been in place for a long time now. you have been able to buy and download many applications (including games) from it directly on the PSP. lots of free stuff too, including demos, themes, trailers, etcetera. I can see them adding a widget section which would most likely house things like http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp?cat=Tools the go is said to have the addition of a clock and calendar application that works when it is closed and open.
They do GPS stuff too, and Skype, so PSP has had 'Apps' for a long time already, possibly longer than the iPhone has existed for.
So when does sony ban the first person who makes a media player, I'd love to be able to play xvid movies on the psp screen
Word's out:
If you don't have an App Store, you're not cool.
they have had a "app" store before apple did, this is just bad reporting
Required, you're really busy in these comments and making yourself look pretty bad.
They have a game store that also hosts some videos. They do not have an app store, as the APP in app store stands for applications, and applications stands for...well, "not-games."
I thought this was already mentioned during E3?
This makes the go's lack of touch screen that much more of a complaint. Sony makes little steps forward, but they always seem to lack the ability to jump up along with the market leaders.
how?
No touch screen and no second analog stick. The DS can control FPSes, the iPhone's controls work well with touch anywhere meaning anywhere on the left side is the left analog stick and anywhere on the right side is the right analog stick (see the trailer for KillTest), and the PSP has auto lock or use the buttons as a d-pad.
Just doesn't work.
You would think that with a slide out controller that the PSP Go would have a touchscreen, but no, Sony you disappoint me. I'll stick with my already established App store on my iPhone.
If you think the app store for the iphone is well established, then check out PSPs homebrew scene which has been running strong for almost 5 years.
They need it. I just picked up a PSP 3000, assuming that the digital store was already well underway ahead of the PSP Go. It's pretty pitiful.
if you really did in fact pick up a PSP you will be glad to know that has a store. it is in the xmb and it has been there for quite some time now.
Engadget seems to have gobbled my response.
I really did in fact pick up a PSP. I bought a nice, shiny PSP 3000 core pack, a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and LocoRoco 2 from my local Gamestop two weeks ago.
And yes, I know full well that there is a store, considering I have bought four games from it already. That wasn't my comment. My comment was that it is presently pitiful, at least for the PSP. I was under the impression there were a lot more titles on there already.
Other than the lack of titles to buy on there, my main complaint is with the horrible PC app used to access the store. Needlessly Windows only, despite the bulk of the store experience being Flash based; and the weird way you have to download to a connected PSP then transfer to the PC... ugh.
You can connect to the store directly from your PSP, no need to go through windows application. I rather recommend it
What's with everyone saying "there's already an app store with games and videos"?
An APP store has APPs. Games and videos are not applications, they are games and videos.
If that is true, I can finally get back to PSP Legal Homebrew Scene !
EXCELLENT, Finally Sony!
Hopefully this is just one of those schemes to see who is leaking information. I'm tired of all these leaks. Seriously, there's no mystery anymore in the gaming industry. I miss being "wowed" by a product or service announcement.
I would guess they would announce this "non-gaming" app store during TGS '09. I would expect random apps and such for the Go similar to the iPhone. Man, seems like Apple has got Sony running around looking for an idea of what the hell the PSP Go is.
It's a portable gaming system with extended capabilities. Sony hasn't lost focus of what the PSP Go is. Just because they're allowing it to do more things doesn't mean it won't stop being primarily a game system. I do think the Go is an experiment for digital distribution above everything else though.
lol, Sony would never have homebrew creators make apps. Didn't they try that twice, with Net Yaroze and PS2 Linux? They hate good ideas. :( Whatever, I got 5.00 M33, so eat me. *zombie-"That could be arranged!" *me-"No! Your ripping me apart!" ...it's a slow night.
Thanks Apple......for making these company start to actually think.
Good competition is always a good kick up the arse....
This is where Sony can pull ahead of microsoft. Having the same kind of "live arcade" in handheld form is where the dev games can really shine...... Id love to have braid on something like my PSP......
FINALLY.
I used to have a PSP and, given the homebrew apps devs were coming up with, i always felt my PSP was not being used to its fullest. I'm considering getting the PSP Go (after a biiig price drop, of course).
Used to have a PSP that was modded, but without compelling new games or features, I got extremely bored with it and sold it. It had a great run for me though
PSP 1/2/3000 and Go! should get an app store. THIS IS A GOOD TIME FOR YOUTUBE. How many hours would i waste if i had YouTube on my PSP(I don't want PSPtube, because i don't want CFW). I'm not on my PSP as much but if this was the case, having apps. Then i would be up in arms for this
