TomTom's Homer Simpson voice skin is just like the real thing, without the Duff's

Well, let's be frank. The Knight Rider GPS, while brilliant, is a bit of a stretch. Isn't it a little sad to be living out your boyhood fantasies of excitement and danger vicariously, behind the wheel of your '92 Buick Roadmaster station wagon? On the other hand, perhaps you're ready to put away your childhood dreams and hit the road in a manner more befitting your average schlub. The official Homer Simpson voice skin for the TomTom GPS features the voice of the iconic cartoon dad, including such gems as "Take the third right. We might find an ice cream truck! Mmm...ice cream." Psyched? We bet you are. Priced at $12.95 -- check out an audio sample after the break, and then hit the read link to pick it up it for yourself.

Will this work on the Tom Tom for iPhone?
I recently bought a Garmin Nuvi 265WT for my wife, but we are about to move to LA and I will need one to get around as well.
Any recommendations?
Not sure I want to have to use my iPhone as a nav system.
Jon @ Jun 16th 2009 11:01AM
Get another Nuvi. If you don't, you'll wish you did.
Kelmon @ Jun 16th 2009 11:12AM
Yeah, I'm wondering if voice packs will be supported on the iPhone application as well. It sure would be nice if they were but I'm not getting my hopes up. The question is, Homer Simpson or Mr. T...? I honestly can't decide.
blakecr @ Jun 16th 2009 11:49AM
I want mine to be Barack Obama!
"Uuuhhhhh..... now look.....yyyyyooouuurrrrrrr gonna wanna take a right up here in aaaaaaaa bit."
"You missseed theeee turn, we're gonna have to recalculate. Its gonna take a bit to turn this clunky ocean liner around, this set back will make our journey a bit rougher and a bit longer, but it is my belief that together we can one day get there, one day we will reach our destination, to the place our forefathers called Starbucks."
This is not a slam on Obama. I love the man. I just think it would be fun to have him as a navigator. :)
murmermer @ Jun 16th 2009 11:57AM
@blackec
You love men? This isn't one of those sites
Andy @ Jun 16th 2009 11:58AM

nz @ Jun 16th 2009 1:13PM
@blakecr Slam or not, that was a pretty good impression. Well played, sir.
astrodemoniac @ Jun 16th 2009 1:43PM
If it goes "Doh!" when I take the wrong turn, I am sold ^_^
Jeff @ Jun 16th 2009 4:16PM
@murmermer

ACEY RIOT @ Jun 16th 2009 10:45AM
I'm imagining making a wrong turn and it says "calculating route...d'oh"
JJ @ Jun 16th 2009 10:45AM
Wrong turn!...Doh!
copeys @ Jun 16th 2009 10:46AM
Doh! You missed that corner!!! Now it's a 5 minute detour. *moans*
;)
Alvarez @ Jun 16th 2009 10:59AM
I hope you mean *groans*?
stingray_shrey @ Jun 16th 2009 11:03AM
no...marge is in there with him 8==D O:
kal326 @ Jun 16th 2009 11:08AM
"And now we play the waiting game. *moan* Ah, the waiting game sucks!"
CtrlBurn @ Jun 16th 2009 11:40AM
"a low, mournful cry of pain, sorrow or even pleasure"
I think moan works as well as groan.
fanman @ Jun 16th 2009 10:46AM
The next one should be Cortanna from Halo.
Richard @ Jun 16th 2009 11:00AM
Oh hell yes. I'd buy a Tom Tom the day they announced that.
"Chief, turn right!"
fanman @ Jun 16th 2009 11:12AM
Chief, up ahead there's a gap in the trench. At top speed WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CLEAR IT!
TT @ Jun 16th 2009 11:12AM
I want the TF2 Heavy!
Little man, turn right, we might find sandvich there!
Gas station in 3 miles, it costs 200,000$ to fill your tank in 20 seconds. *Laughter*
TT @ Jun 16th 2009 11:19AM
Or of course, the Soldier:
"Maggot! You call that driving?! Turn around!"
Once people enter the car:
"Last one alive, lock the door!"
Blah blah speech: "And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo!" "There's one in 2 miles!"
holycow @ Jun 16th 2009 10:48AM
This is brilliant! Let's just hope it comes in yellow!
james @ Jun 16th 2009 10:49AM
You should be able to have a few dozen different voices and TomTom randomly picks on for each trip.
AniMill @ Jun 16th 2009 10:49AM
This truly makes me want to buy a Tom Tom today! Seriously... now if only Amazon could get Homer as the voice of the Kindle.
Richard Lai @ Jun 16th 2009 10:51AM
Let's have one with Peter and Stewie Griffin as well.
Richard @ Jun 16th 2009 11:03AM
I can picture the Stewie one now:
Mom, mom, mom, momma, momma, momma, mommy, mommy, mommy, ma, ma, ma, mum, mum, mum, mumma, mumma, mumma.
Hi.
Wwhat @ Jun 16th 2009 10:53AM
Its fun although the clear sarcasm of the "you can hold your head up high" is more a sideshow bob remark than a homer simpson one, he could say it but not in such a tone, that's a bit out of character IMHO.
ash chapman @ Jun 16th 2009 11:23AM
I thought the same thing. I haven't seen the Simpsons in years now but every time I see a newer episode Homer generally seems to be out of character. It seems like he was sort of recreated.
a @ Jun 16th 2009 10:53AM
makes you wonder why they haven't come up with this sooner.
TareX @ Jun 16th 2009 10:53AM
EPIC WIN.
MaX PL @ Jun 16th 2009 10:56AM
oh man i just bought a tomtom gps a few days ago. i'm gonna download this skin if it doesnt cost too much extra.
Christian Martin @ Jun 16th 2009 11:00AM
At least it's an OPTION and not the only voice on a device. Kudos to TomTom for that. It'd be a fun novelty for a while and then start to grate on my nerves, personally.
mattszafir @ Jun 16th 2009 11:04AM
I'll have to get this for my Canyonero...12 yards long, 2 lanes wide,
65 tons of American Pride!
Le Big Mac @ Jun 16th 2009 11:25AM
Yee-haw!
Although it will need to come back in a future episode as made in China . . .
Tony Rayo @ Jun 16th 2009 11:05AM
I think you just invented the word, "voice skin". At the very least I haven't heard used in public conversations.
TimmyRaa @ Jun 16th 2009 11:07AM
Great, so they have a funny novelty voice, now if only they could make a decent satnav...
Ike Turner @ Jun 16th 2009 11:13AM
Waiting for the Dave Chappelle Voice pack.
5 0 5 0!! Nigga Damn!! I'm rich Bitch!
mathias @ Jun 16th 2009 11:13AM
I don't understand what is new here, my brother have this Homer voice on his tom tom one for years now. Nothing new here in Europe.
crashcarstar @ Jun 16th 2009 11:27AM
That Homer voice sucks and is not official.
jerm @ Jun 16th 2009 11:21AM
have you people even heard of pigtones.com before?
Anonymous @ Jun 16th 2009 10:48PM
They all sound like shit.
Amandyke @ Jun 16th 2009 11:23AM
So how much did Engadget get paid for this Blogad?
Michael Szatny @ Jun 16th 2009 11:27AM
Is the Homer voice Text-to-Speech (TTS)?
MS
Eric B @ Jun 16th 2009 11:28AM
All work and no play make Homer something something.
Go crazy?
Don't mind if I do!!!
Big Wizz @ Jun 16th 2009 1:33PM
No TV and no beer make Homer something something.
Eric B @ Jun 16th 2009 2:30PM
Thanks for the correction.
"Oh, so they have internet on computers now!"
Classic
markus @ Jun 16th 2009 11:34AM
This would be GREAT, for about a whole 2 days. Then the novelty would wear off. I've installed different voices on my Nuvi and it's fun for a while, but then I just want the directions without all the drama.
BigTeebo @ Jun 16th 2009 11:54AM
I can see a whole new voiceover market being born here.
Galley @ Jun 16th 2009 12:04PM
That is all sorts of awesome!
Ninjis @ Jun 16th 2009 12:11PM
