Video: Josh, Jimmy Fallon, and the iPhone 3 Ga-Speed
Johnny Carson may have had his monkeys, but Jimmy Fallon has, well, Josh. Our very own Jack Hanna of late night gadgetry. Watch Josh school Jimmy in the ways of the iPhone 3G S in the video after the break -- don't worry, it's been edited down for the safety of children. Sure, Mr. Topolsky (as he makes us call him) is a big shot now, but you can still remember him when.

The sluggish iPhone 3G was always fast for the Apple fanboys. I wonder why apple even cared to release iPhone 3G S. iPhone is a heavily hyped crap gadget like all other apple products. The most basic features are still being waited for. The only good apple product is iPod Touch which had a good price vs. performance ratio and no real competition. Palm Pre will kill the iPhone soon.
Well that was pointless...I hope you feel better.
Do you own a Zune?
good price vs performance ration? But the ipod touch costs more than the iphone and you get less features?
yeah you gotta get a contract, but you have to with the pre and any other newer smartphone to not pay the $500+ prices.
You forgot to mention that the Pre (Sprint) contract costs about $700 - $900 less than ATT's same tiered plans
Stick that in you pipe and smoke it....
you know you're right, thank you for saving my next silly iphone purchase
They are basically saying iphone 3Gs is Iphone 3G with some gimmicks
So the iPhone is a crap gadget but the iPod Touch is good? Do you realize that the are about 85% identical, and the only areas in which they are different are areas in which the iPhone is better? I just don't quite see your logic there...
@ murmermer
Multitasking with 3rd party apps, a gesture area, a removable battery, uh...
Damn
murmermer: Quite the dilemma, isn't it. I guess one advantage to owning a Pre would be that people won't automatically assume you're a douche bag.
They'll only find out when you say something.
they only made the 3GS to milk the shit out of iphone for all its worth. they'll probably still becoming out with an Iphone 10 years from now. be sure to look for the iphone 4GTSXL super edition
@vimick: And so what if they do? I fail to understand why so many people get so worked up whenever Apple, or anyone else refreshes a device. You don't HAVE to buy the newest version...
I bought the original iPhone on day one. When the 3G was released, I decided the features weren't worth me paying the extra money for, and guess what, I still loved my OG iPhone as it did what I bought it for, and kept getting better via upgrades.. Now that the 3GS is here and has enough features that I'd benefit from and my contract is up, I'll get that soon. If they release an iPhone 3GSS and it's not a significant bump in features, I can wait on that too. Perhaps I may be the illogical one, but if a device does what I need it to do, I'm perfectly fine holding onto it even if something newer and shiny comes along.
And even though the 3GS is largley the same as the 3G, that's not neccesarily a bad thing. The iPhone is still the dominant force in smartphones, and the Palm Pre is going to push Apple to make their product better. We all win. If the iPhone was outdated, your argument would hold some weight, but it's still leading the pack in terms of overall features and execution.
@murmermer
Palm Pre Benefits over IPhone 3GS
-Have both an exchange and a normal email address synced up at the same time.
-Cheapest plans include unlimited text and picture messaging. You will be charged for text messages (.20c per) on the iPhone's cheapest plan.
-Includes a turn by turn direction app right out of the box.
-Smaller overall footprint - iphone feels much larger in comparison. I own both, so i can compare both side by side.
-Removable Battery - included battery is the exact same size as the iphones - the advantage is you can bring a spare that costs less than most iPhone third party attachments, which add bulk and size, not to mention are of limited use when the internal battery itself does not hold a charge (unless you want to keep it in there permanently).
-Multitasking (this is useful for more than just 'playing two games at once' - you can run third party apps such as evernote and pandora in tandem with mail and the browser, for instance. Push notifications will never offer this functionality.
-Built-in IM client allows you to seamless switch between text messages and IMs
-OTA backups allow you to restore data on your phone easily.
-Gesture Area leverages the touch screen technology even more
- Physical keyboard - good for not only typing, but persistent commands such as keyboard shortcuts.
- Built in To-Dos Sync over Exchange
- Touchstone charger (not a huge deal imo)
- Less obtrusive notifications
- Syncing of Google, Facebook, and Exchange Calendars seamlessly.
- OTA software updates
- MMS on AT&T is not currently available
- Calendar day view much more useful
- Classic emulator opens up a lot of extra functionality, especially for those used to old Palm devices.
- Third party apps high quality - Pandora allows you to pause and skip tracks with the wired remote and run in the background as a notification, Fandango allows your ordered tickets to automatically add the event to your calendar, which syncs to the cloud. This is the standard on WebOS because the entire device is very "connected" with the cloud.
IPhone 3GS benefits over Palm Pre Benefits
- More apps in app store
- Compass
- Video Recording Out of Box
- Rollover Minutes
- OTA movie purchases
- Better Build (on screen, not so much everywhere else)
- Search in Mail
- Better Copy and Paste Implementation
To reply to your criticisms:
No true apps - only webapps (so weak) - Just because the SDK is based on web code does not mean there are not native apps. They run and feel like any iPhone app.
No video recording - Promised publicly by Palm.
No true app store (so few apps, it's literally one App Page) - Just because there are few apps does not mean it does not have a 'true' app store.
No console-quality games (like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, 1000's of others for iPhone) - While I agree the iPhones games are impressive, I would hardly call them console quality. Resident Evil was the closest I tried that felt like a real game, but definitely felt stripped down even so. Despite having so many games I rarely found one that I would really call great (rolando, sim city, maybe?)
No podcasts - This can play them back just fine. Do you mean downloads?
Pre screen is too small - It is smaller, but the same resolution. You can state this as a con but I certainly don't mind either way.
More expensive than iPhone - This is true if you compare it to the 3G, but not the 3GS. And this is certainly not true if you compare the plans. The pre definitely has more advantages over the 3G than the 3Gs.
No native media player (Apple can break iTunes compatibility at any time and I don't want to take that chance) - Do you mean media syncing? In my opinion I would rather have drag and drop than syncing.
No multiple and customizable home screens like iPhone (Pre only has one home screen) - Pre has three customizable home screens.
No Webclips - Not true. You can save any page to the home screen just like you can on an iPhone.
PS - the iPhone CAN multitask - It cannot 'download files' and answer an email, or download a pdf at the same time if Boggle is your foreground app. The minute you want to try to switch to the mail app, it will quit out of Boggle and you will have to resume or start over your game. This feels lightyears behind the Pre, where switching between ANY app is seamless and wouldn't require a second thought.
For me what it comes down to is a less glitchy device than the iPhone 3G, for a lower monthly bill, that does everything I need the iPhone to do, and adds extra conveniences for me that the iphone didnt have. The benefits of the Pre all definitely feel like Palm was focusing on the device as an organizer - almost a BlackBerry competitor rather than an iPod/iphone competitor.
Either way, both good devices, I just think the pre fits me better.
@murmermer:
Half of your problems with the pre are whether missing apps, which has nothing to do with the phone, and will be solved soon, or problems with sprint limitations, which will be solved as soon as other providers get it.
So... I went through your list...
Apps problems:
"No true app store" The pre has been out for 3 weeks.
"No console-quality games" Only apple marketing can say the iPhone has console-quality games, if you really think so, you're a tool.
"No Peer to Peer games" just a matter of time.
"Can't function as a Remote for the household stereo" That's only if your setup include a mac with iTunes as your stereo. I bet I can find a setup where the Pre is able to act as a remote, cheaper.
Sprint problems:
No voice and data at the same time
No AT&T free hotspots
No free Starbucks hotspots
No 7.2 Mbps network speed (I listed it too in real problems)
Lame problems:
No true apps - only webapps (so weak) ??? are you kidding?
No voice dialing
No native in-car integration
Pre screen is too small (you opinion, I think the form factor is great)
Tiny keyboard (physical keyboard is still better)
More expensive than iPhone, ??? how?
"No oleophobic protective screen" That's cute, you learnt a new word.
"No native media player" That's the exact reason why I'll never buy a iPhone, I don't want to be tied to a player.
No Compass
No Parental Controls
No Video Editing
No onboard Ringtone Creation
No Webclips
No auto wi-fi login (just jumps on any open network and remembers them all)
"No multiple and customizable home screens like iPhone" lamest, ever.
meh problems:
No voice dialing
"No movie rentals/No TV show purchases/No audiobook purchasing" Amazon may take care of it.
No VoiceOver
"No Find My Phone feature" It's a cool feature of the iPhone, but still meh.
No Voice Commands
No 5 person conference calls
No Webclips
Real, true problems:
8 GB memory limit, SDHC removable cards FTW
No video recording
No voice memos
No visual Voicemail
No podcasts
Crippled copy/paste
No universal search
No 7.2 Mbps network speed
Weak battery life, but you can replace it if you really need it, a second battery is 30$, it's ok...
Very scratchable screen
About the IPhone:
No removable battery.
No way to install apps outside of their App Store + Apple policy regarding what can be on the store.
Need for iTunes.
No usb mass storage.
No touch stone charging.
Very scratchable screen.
No (fast) hardware camera button.
It's been exhausting...
Overall, Palm's problems are mostly software or network problems. Remember it's a 1.0, till yesterday, the iPhone didn't have 2/3 of the features you're listing.
On the other hand, my first 4 iPhone problems are real true blockers for me, and probably for many others.

@Bokal
Very scratchable screen on the iPhone?
Duuude you really haven't seen an iPhone, have you? It has the most scratch-resistant screen I've ever seen, 2 years of really rough treatment and it's scratch-free, contrary to some nokias and sony erricsson's. The back of it is another story though.
Plus for you no native music app is a con, well I would like some native ones too, but as of today the iPod.app is the best mobile media app ever created.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETO3-MxMe2Q
Hey after three generations, Apple finally makes a decent phone. Still leaves out a bunch of smartphone essentials.
@sourcerer:
If the screen was so resistant, then why the need of all these screen protectors and sleeves?
I admit it's more resistant than other phones, but it's still a phone screen, it scratchable.
Put as a con against the pre, it had to be put for the iPhone too.
About the native media player app, he was talking about iTunes, not about iPod, and so was I. The pre has an embedded media player app too by the way.
If you want to load or sync your iPhone with anything else than iTunes, it's always gonna be tricky, and depends on Apple's will.
I use Linux as my everyday system, I can't have iTunes, so I'll never consider an iPhone/iPod. Blocker.
And even if I could, being tied to a computer application to be able to use my phone sounds crazy to me.

Im sorry but this Pre reality distortion field is really annoying. Yes the pre is a very very nice phone, but you people need to quit watching the palm videos and USE ONE. ITs not all fucking rainbows and ponies. The battery WILL DIE if you use it hard like an iphone, you will get 1/2 way through the day and that’s it. The pre will slow to a crawl if you have music playing and start going and doing other things, especially if that music is coming from pandora. Again it is a nice phone but its certainly not perfect in any sense, nor does it pull off its greatest features extremely well.
Please for the love of god, use the same objectivity that you are all so proud of when judging the iphone, when you are evaluating the pre.
I have been using a Pre since launch day, and have kept my iPhone 3G too. Until the Pre I have always kept a second device because I’ve hated the pre-3.0 iPhone for email, not only because of the virtual keyboard but also how slow it is to keep my email synced versus a Palm (with Good) or Blackberry. So I have been waiting for the Pre for a long time and really wanted to love it and am not an Apple fan boy who has loved the iPhone as-is.
That said, I expect to give up the Pre. While I still love the physical keyboard, the integration of Facebook with my Exchange contacts and the multi-tasking, this just isn’t enough to make up for what isn’t great (at least in the current software release).
In particular, things are too slow and take too many steps. If you reply or forward an email it opens it as a new card then when you send it, it leaves you in card browsing mode so you have to select your previous email, wait for it to go full-screen, use the back gesture (which often fails if you do it too quickly after selecting) and wait for the in-box to re-appear. In that same time I could have forwarded 2 emails on a Blackberry. Worst still is answering a call when the phone is in your pocket. You have to unlock it, wait for a painfully long time for it to pop up the phone app then select talk. It typically takes at least 1.5-2 rings of time to accomplish this – way too long. And the app selection sucks. Even day one Apple had way, way more apps than the dozen or two Palm is offering. And they have barely added any since launch. I realize it’s not quantity but quality of apps that matters in the end, but the point of the Apple select is there really is an app for just about everything so whatever your interest you can find something. I use my phone for so many different purposes now and the Pre I can still basically only use for email, calling and a few other basic tasks.
By comparison, the landscape keyboard in OS3 is working great for my on the iPhone and while its still a long way from typing on my Blackberry in terms of speed of operation it is good enough versus the Pre.
We got three Pre’s in our office day one and all three of us are planning to turn them in. Also, my wife is finally ungrading to a true smart phone and waited out the Pre because she hates the virtual keyboard, but after playing with it for a week then playing with the landscape keyboard yesterday she’s decided to go for a new iPhone… I’m sure the Pre will be great for some users and it may get better with subsequent upgrades (assume Palm lasts). I point is really looking at the bullet point specs is not enough – the devil is in the details of usability.
Forgot one other point. I had been stoked on paper about the swappable battery in the Pre too, but not so much now. I would rather have a phone that lasts all day than one that I need to carry an extra battery around and keep separately charged each night because it can’t make it through a full day. That’s the story with the Pre. With medium use, it isn’t even making it through a day, averaging 7-8 hours. I have had to get a second charger and keep it refreshed in the office to get through the day. Use the navigation and it gets even worst – 5 hours from full charge to dead inclusive of 70 minutes with the navigation feature on and medium use (few calls but lots of email). I have had it last 13 hours on a weekend, but that was with almost no calls, few emails and time spend in a wi-fi zone and non-3G network range. As a practical matter, how does one even keep two batteries charged at once? I typically charge my phones overnight. So I would have to charge one battery in the phone, get up and swap it out mid-night to get both charged. No thanks. My iphone always makes it through the day unless I do an insane amount of talking.
You know when your an Apple Fanboy when you get excited that your phone can finally shoot video, send a picture text, and copy and paste. My Treo's been doing all this since about 2004. How can people be excited for this new innovative phone from Apple? It's just barely covering the basics and everyone gets excited because Apple tells them it's exciting. I like the Iphone, but I will probably go with the Pre for my next purchase due to the iPhone Zombie followers. You guys are the epitome of tools.
Hue, let me know if you find answer to this question.
my 'friend' on facebook (owns everything apple ever released) said that new iPhone 3GS is amazing because it's 2x faster. When I asked why he says that because he never complained about the speed, he was just like Ehm, uhm but you can record movies now.
my 4 years old blackberry has push turned on and lasts almost 5 days on single charge, why the !@#$ iPhone did not improve talk time is just a mystery to me
He's just mad because he probably has sprint and he can't switch to ATT....
Haha lol. I'm mad because I can't switch to AT&T... Good one chris.
So whatever happened to windows mobile 7 or MS pink phone?
I'm quite happy with 6.1 on my Diamond2... ;)
That was actually quite a short session. I guess there's not much to talk about with the new 3G S.....
HUZZAH! lol
oh no, havn't you seen the review?
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review/
I'd tend to agree. Especially if you are 3G owner, the point in updating is highly questionable.
I reckon the compass and in-app maps will bring out some very interesting 3D party apps. -Shrug- that said it is highly unlikely (though not impossible) that the compass will get removed next year so its a wait until then.
@ Craig
Yep you nailed it. Very short segment compared to the Palm Pre one that Josh did. Even Jimmy was kinda like "S for speed huh? So what else does it do?"
...not much
the best part is that they show how you can create videos now ... I saw app on 3G where you could shoot video. This is classic apple, let's restrict one feature, create amazing new phone which is exactly the same and just enable one tiny thing ...
oh yeah, the compass. I forgot about the compass ....
That was disappointing. I was hoping to see the Eos. The audience didn't seem like they were into it either. You should of punched Fallon in the face for having such a dumb bit. Nice suit though.
Well, you know, they test a new cellphone, it's really not that exciting. It's a phone.
I do not own a Zune but I am eagerly awaiting the Zune HD.
I have owned a Zune 30 and I have a Zune 80. Guess what I am buying for my next MP3 player...an iPod Touch. Just as soon as Apple updates its processor and other specs to match the 3GS (assuming they do). Microsoft is simply too late to the game.
The ZuneHD will be here before the new ipod touch... so you going to buy a useless iphone clone?
yeah this seemed definately shorter than the last time jt was on... and that bit was corny (not that i expected any different from jimmy fallon) the PREvious appearance was way more entertaining. Oh yeah tell Al Roker to stop calling me:-(
Damn, Jimmy Fallon is so amazingly awkward and unfunny. How did this guy get his own show.
His awkwardness is cute when he's talking to a more composed and confident person. The contrast is funny.
But when he does it with Josh... it's just painful to watch. It's like a contest in awkwardness and bad jokes that end abruptly, after successfully raping your mood.
"His awkwardness is cute"
I really hope TareX is a Woman.
You should have seen Conan when he started out too.
"Painful to watch"
I couldn't have said it better!!
Get some real guests on there who know what they're talking about rather than just saying "I guess" when asked a question. Moron!
Nerd meets Geek, meets nerd.
Or Awkward meets more Awkward, meets bleh.
"Can I call you Josh?"
"Umm, well actually I'd prefer if you call me... umm... well you know what Josh is fine. There's no joke there. You can call me whatever you want."
Seriously when you are socially awkward (to put it in the sweetest terms), it's better to have something prepared. This isn't E3, nor is it G4TV.
How was that awkward? It made me smile.
...but you smiled in an awkward way.
Josh was funny, Jimmy is just not.
Funny was not, is Josh Jimmy.
