Dell Vostro 1220 leaks out, looks as cool as it sounds
It's hard to hate on Dell's Vostro lineup: cheap is cheap, and there's nothing wrong with that. In truth, it could probably look a lot worse, but there's just something vaguely depressing about these unflattering leaked shots of what's apparently a crimson version of an upcoming 12-inch Vostro 1220 model -- in comparison with the fairly clean lines of the existing lineup, these new curves aren't doing the laptop any style favors, though it's at least an improvement over the existing 12-inch model. Specs are certainly alright, with a Core 2 Duo T6750 processor (remember back when every small, cheap computer wasn't running Atom?), 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, SD card slot, ExpressCard and even a fingerprint reader, and we're sure the price is even better. No word on a release date.

actually not bad but I'd take one of those HP ProBooks instead
Ivand @ Jun 19th 2009 11:19AM
Also it has BOTH an SD Card reader and ExpressCard
i think dell just one-upped apple here
Game_playa @ Jun 19th 2009 6:03PM
yep yep
keplenk @ Jun 19th 2009 10:17AM
Anybody knows what chipset it uses? I really hope that its not the Intel 4 series!
Al @ Jun 19th 2009 12:21PM
If the 12in and 13in Latitude line is using the intel 4500hd then I would think this would be too. I actually prefer the size of the Latitude E4200(12in), but since I prefer to have a webcam for skype this seems better. I don't get it they put a web cam(as an option) on ever Latitude model except for the E4200.
avis @ Jun 19th 2009 10:12AM
looks like style is back..no more bland looking laptops?
fieldcar @ Jun 19th 2009 10:34AM
Yeah, who knew they would actually think to hire designers rather than engineers to finalize aesthetics.
Agent .25i @ Jun 19th 2009 10:41AM
Other than being shiny, this has nothing stylistically speaking, that 90% of the laptops in the market don't have.
Now Ailenware's M17X, and Dell's XPS line up are sexy machines. You see one, and you know what it is.
This looks just like the VIAO they had on yesterday. Just a different color.
webran61 @ Jun 19th 2009 11:05AM
I disagree. The only style here is the addition of shiny coating, which practically every computer maker does when trying to "glam up" their design. But I digress. I love all the shiny-ness of my HP HDX, including the fake chrome.
shaunisadirty @ Jun 19th 2009 10:13AM
I actually have nothing to say, all the iHumpers keep saying we shouldn't post in Apple threads if we don't want Apple coverage, so I'm just making a post to boost comments here. Have a nice day.
Level 5 @ Jun 19th 2009 10:15AM
It's so THICK... and unfortunately for me, no, that's not what she said. :(
General_Trelane, (retired) @ Jun 19th 2009 10:23AM
Listen here you drone...
IBM Thinkpad is a classis design that has some girth to it. But if I had only a fraction of a moment to mull over what Laptop I would have to buy I would not let 1/400th of a femtosecond be colluded with the STUPIDITY that Apple has infused into the market where the thinner and allumaniumic the Laptop means it is better...
Go worship Apple, and aren't you suppose to be in line with the other iSheep to get your iPhone 3G Sr type honda crap phone?
Nomi @ Jun 19th 2009 10:58AM
Pay no attention to the troll Level 5...This guy's a dick, just look at his post history.
Mike10010100 @ Jun 19th 2009 11:04AM
Ooooooooh. A new challenge.
@General Trelane:
Just because someone comments on the thickness of a particular laptop, don't automatically assume that they're Apple Fanboys. I myself thought that the laptop was rather boxy. However, I prefer function over form. If this laptop was cheap and had everything that I needed, then the looks certainly wouldn't keep me from buying it, within reason (A.K.A., not 20 pounds and feels like it's going to break).
STFU troll.
BOGRASH @ Jun 19th 2009 11:56AM
as much as I enjoyed the level 5 sonning of trollaine, i have to challenge the vostro line being biz class? it's their budget range innit?
Level 5 @ Jun 19th 2009 12:10PM
It's on the business section of the website, it's definitely a budget notebook, but still a business one.
Mike10010100 @ Jun 19th 2009 1:05PM
@General_Trelane
Is there any point in your posts? STFU.
General_Trelane, (retired) @ Jun 19th 2009 1:15PM
@ Mike, yea, while you are wasting 60 minutes thinking up a snappy reply with your sub-average brain, I am doing your wife!
AHAHAHAH!
What did you learn?
*hint (STFU)
Level 5 @ Jun 19th 2009 1:18PM
Wow.. an edit of my avatar and ANOTHER response to my post. That's something only someone who's obsessed or a stalker would do... but I can't blame you, look how awesome I am! Only thing to do now is egg you on for more replies because man you are really making my day with this!
Mike10010100 @ Jun 19th 2009 2:32PM
@General_Trelane
This is absolutely amazing. See, the reason that there was a 60 minute delay in my response, was that, unlike you, I have a life!
GTFO troll. What are you even trying to say? You obviously don't like anything in the world. You hate Apple, Microsoft, Sony, basically every gadget on this website. And you do it to get people riled up. I bet your 2 inch e-peen gets all hard when you think of the people you are ticking off. That seems to be the only reason you do it. Lol
Now STFU. If you would make actual comments, I might be able to own you like I did Paul A. Chappele.
Hagrun @ Jun 19th 2009 3:29PM
WOW! How passionate you guys are about such trivial things.
On another note How can this laptop be cool sporting a VGA port of all things? It's like wearing tighty-whities... you just can't be cool that way.
stephenb @ Jul 31st 2009 9:52AM
no, thats what she moaned. but really, concidering the specs, this thing is pretty sleek.
justin @ Jun 19th 2009 10:26AM
Is this notebook doing to be available for sale in the US?
Michael @ Jun 19th 2009 10:20AM
I kinda like it. The outer shell has a sort of mech feel to it.
rodney.ha @ Jun 19th 2009 10:20AM
Question: Why do a lot of laptops have off-center trackpads? I know some have them perfectly centered, so why don't others brands do the same? I know it doesn't impact functionality, but I'm just curious to know the reason behind it all.
jakem @ Jun 19th 2009 10:53AM
The trackpad is centred according to the correct typing position. Place the fingers on your left hand on A to F and the fingers on your right hand on J to ; and you'll find that the trackpad sits under your thumbs.
ed. @ Jun 19th 2009 11:19AM
going from what jakem said, having it centered according to the correct typing position means your hand/wrist doesn't hit the touchpad while you're typing, and thus stops accidental clicks.
AnthonyLeong @ Jun 19th 2009 10:41AM
One ugly laptop.
Alex @ Jun 19th 2009 10:23AM
No included floppy drive? What the hell! How else am I supposed to install Windows XP?!
james @ Jun 19th 2009 10:23AM
strip the DVD drive and make it weigh around 3.5 pounds and i'm on board.
zom @ Jun 19th 2009 10:35AM
I have no idea what the fuss is about... since when is a functional laptop dependent on how it looks? Just give me one that works and does everything I want and I could care less what it looks like, barring pictures of ponies and rainbows on the cover.
Justin @ Jun 19th 2009 10:38AM
Depending on price, this might be a sweet alternative to a netbook. Hmm.
molecule-eye @ Jun 19th 2009 10:50AM
Just another thin-and-light.
BOGRASH @ Jun 19th 2009 11:58AM
whilst being neither particularly thin or light, yet managing to fulfil the 'glossy and tacky' remit
marty @ Jun 19th 2009 10:55AM
'looks as cool as it sounds'
???
?joke?
???
- apple has destroyed all competition in the arena of sexiness and functionality -
Al @ Jun 19th 2009 12:24PM
Sony's line would beg to differ, and so would the Samsung line(except their netbooks).
BigD145 @ Jun 19th 2009 11:06AM
"remember back when every small, cheap computer wasn't running Atom"
No, but I do remember when small EXPENSIVE computer wasn't running Atom.
blankoboy @ Jun 19th 2009 11:07AM
Nvidia ION or Intel IGP?
Duke2 @ Jun 19th 2009 11:48AM
yeah- how come no mention of GPU here????
Art @ Jun 19th 2009 11:52AM
fail. just fail.
BOGRASH @ Jun 19th 2009 12:01PM
optical drives are relic, it's fugly as all hell, too fat, too heavy and that gloss red is gross, not class. backlit isolated keys, go on a diet and shed the cargo and perhaps we'll talk.
Kiteless @ Jun 19th 2009 12:44PM
Hey Paul come on, I think it is a nice looking little lappy. Has a neat asthetic bow along the bottom and the plack lip on the end adds some nice lines. I think the "BoringTop" of Vostros before can't hold a candle to this. If I was in the market for a 12" PC I would certainly give this one a serious look. Being a "Slider" I like Mac and Windows. One point I always have to give Windows PC's is the unlimited variety in style. I have a 2006 MacBook Pro and an Asus G50vt-X1 and I love them both. Anyway just my 2 cents of courtse. ;p

Style and Dell? Oil and water. Has Dell ever managed to keep a design theme in production for longer than five minutes?
munrok715 @ Jun 19th 2009 1:36PM
no hdmi again!?!?!?
come ppl we need HDMI out on these laptops!!!
Doug_Parks @ Jun 19th 2009 1:41PM
Thinkpad Supremecy
Ryan @ Jun 19th 2009 3:33PM
My XPS m1210 looks bettter than this. Christ.
slackero @ Jun 19th 2009 6:25PM
Oh, a brick landed... What an ugly crap.
JXS @ Jun 19th 2009 6:39PM
I really could careless about aesthetics, but whats with all this glossy bullshit the last couple years? Other than a select few laptops, most have glossy finishes.
I'll just stick with my Thinkpad...
smz @ Jun 20th 2009 4:16AM
One more fu**ing glossy TN screen! :-( When will this madness end? Give me a matte IPS panel, please!
Kelvinyam @ Jun 20th 2009 5:19AM
When it's compared to my Mini 12, it's just too thick. Why can't Dell put in a slot DVDRW and make it slimmer? Besides, does Dell really need to make the corner so sharp? I mean wouldn't a rounded corner looks more pleasant? I predict this thing is not going to be cheap, judging from the specifications.
