New Toshiba Satellite laptops now available Stateside

Remember those new Satellites that Toshiba dropped in Europe a week or two ago? Seems like they're making the scene Stateside starting today, alongside several of their siblings. As previously noted, the A500 is a 16-inch multimedia machine (starting at $749.99), while the U500 ($849.99) is a 13.3-inch guy more suited to on-the-go computing. Newly announced are the M500/M505 (with 14-inch high-def LED display, starting at $699.99) and the P500/P505 (an 18.4-inch desktop replacement with slot-loading DVD drive, starting at $799.99). All the new Satellites include multimedia command keys, webcam, face recognition software, harmon/kardon speakers and, of course, the world renowned eSATA/USB combo port. And if you're good, we have a couple pics for you. After the break, of course.

i am really getting tired of laptops and netbooks, jesus they never stop
webran61 @ Jun 23rd 2009 4:23PM
What the heck are you using to browse and comment on Engadget then? Are you on a desktop?
OneLove @ Jun 23rd 2009 4:56PM
...and iPhONEs and PrEs.

It's the phone updates that never stop. New app, same phone different color casing, same phone, different chipset and they all do the same thing (for the most part), yawn. All of that should be in the moble section, not the main page.

God I hear you brother. I want some real tech news not just a list of potential shopping cart items. Where are the articles on the newest cordless telephones and microwave ovens. I want to see a hands on of a Chamberlain 3/4 HP Belt Whisper Drive Plus garage door opener. And how about we get a review of the latest 10,000-in-1 gaming device. I can't tell you how long its been since they've written about one. Its obviously because they're so biased toward the Xbox.

Is it a condition that manufacturers print the "We reccomend Vista" on their websites, print advertisments etc?
Its really annoying because i dont care what they recommend, because i know exactly what i want.
As for the laptops, Toshiba have finally stepped up from the horrible laptops they have had for the last couple of years. I LOVED the Te2000/6100/9100 lines, i wish they still did those designs with the speakers on the hinge area.

It is a condition to get the co-advertising money from MicroSoft.
Templarian @ Jun 23rd 2009 11:13PM
Intel does the same thing.

Hopefully they fixed their ghetto a/c plugs.

Never again will I buy Toshiba and especially not a Satellite. I had 3 of them die within 3 weeks of each other. The first one's screen literally melted the day I bought it for my girlfriend. The next one's hard drive failed within 6 hours of turning the damn thing on, and the third overheated and blue screen'd every 30 minutes.

I'm using a 6 year old satellite and it works great
OLight @ Jun 24th 2009 8:51AM
Ditto - 6-year-old Satellite at home. Granted, I've replaced the HD, 802.11 card, and maxed out the RAM, but those were relatively cheap upgrades, each kept the lappie going "another year." As is said, "YMMV."

I'm on my second Satellite laptop, loved the first one so much got another. First lasted a good 5 years, through 150+ degree days in the Middle East sand and all.
My second is a gorgeous 17-inch Core 2 duo that everyone compliments me on, and runs (and sounds) awesome.
Will always recommend Toshiba.
MG76 @ Jun 23rd 2009 4:24PM
Wow, I have just the opposite. I have a P25 and A65 series Satellites that are now about 6 years old. They have always worked perfectly for me, and the P25 is still my main system for web surfing and downloading.
godai @ Jun 23rd 2009 4:39PM
I'm still using my Satellite A100 after 2.5 years. Great hardware, would definitely consider Toshiba again in the future.
CreepinJesus @ Jun 23rd 2009 4:44PM
+1 here. In fact, I was so pleased with reliability and build quality of it, we got 2 more for other family members :)

I was actually waiting for these laptops to ship here in the States before I posted my desktop on ebay, I find myself on the go more than I used to, a desktop ties me down. Guess I better get my specsheet in order...

My 2004 M30 was plagued with issues, even though it had good hardware, but the A200 I bought in september of 2008 works very well. These toshiba laptops are the only laptops I can find with harman/kardon speakers and I've liked them for that, and usually they have pretty good value, it's just that sometimes there are issues with their BUILD QUALITY!
Sevenfish @ Jun 23rd 2009 5:30PM
I don't like small screen.
Will @ Jun 23rd 2009 6:23PM
Toshiba notebooks are such POS.
cesium @ Jun 23rd 2009 7:07PM
Where's the U500??
D @ Jun 23rd 2009 8:54PM
My Toshiba 3490CT Ultraportable from a decade ago is still functioning!!! Those are the days when Toshiba was leading notebook manufacturer. Now it's all craps.
Hector @ Jun 24th 2009 12:09AM
I have an old 330CDS with Pentium MMX Processor, still working :D and an A215 that I just sold last week. I was just about buying the A355 in Bestbuy, but there was no stock... then I read this and... I know why there's no stock :D
I'll wait for the A500
ReubenOtto @ Jun 24th 2009 12:28AM
theres no mention of the tv tuner on the website? or the 8gb or ram...
dasmoothride @ Jun 24th 2009 2:10AM
I like the font they use it's very cute. I wonder what font they use.
Zane @ Jun 24th 2009 3:20AM
Microghey, available from dafonts.
salmoncannon @ Jun 24th 2009 4:29AM
My mom still uses an old Satellite from the early 90's nearly every day for her work, and the only thing that's gone wrong with it is that I think the hard drive failed once. Not too shabby, I'd say.
Omer @ Jun 24th 2009 9:01AM
WOw .... i still use my Toshiba satellite pro M50. almost 4 years old. still works great.
dosguy @ Jun 24th 2009 12:55PM
The one feature I've always liked about Toshiba laptops is the analog volume control, a feature found on very few machines. On my Sony Vaio, I have to hit Ctrl, F4, wait for the little window to pop up, then keep hitting the back arrow until I reach the desired volume. It's so much easier on the Toshiba with the little knob. I hope they kept this feature on the new models. I, too, by the way, am using a decade-old Toshiba lappy. It's a solidly built machine and still performs flawlessly. I'm almost ready to look for a desktop replacement, and Toshiba is the first place I'll look.
