Sony placing PS3 slim manufacturing orders for delivery in July?
We haven't heard much about the PS3 slim since E3, but that doesn't mean it's been entirely quiet out there -- the hot rumor today is that Sony's signed manufacturing agreements with both Foxconn and Pegatron to build the revised model in time for July delivery. That much we believe, since it's been backed up by a couple different credible reports, but here's where it gets totally insane: there's a suggestion that the slim will be the last PS3 model of this generation, and that a next-gen console based on Sony's motion controller is due in spring 2010. We don't buy that at all, since the PS3 is just entering its prime and Sony was clear that the motion controller was for the existing console, so we think this rumor is getting garbled down the wire -- it's far more likely that the slim is being prepped for an August launch to coincide with those rumored price cuts, and that new PS3 bundles that include the motion controller are set to drop next year. That's just our take on the matter, though -- we'll see how things shake out.

PS3 is so 2000 and late. What's Sony going to fail at next? An iPhone "killer"?
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII (BarCODE) @ Jul 1st 2009 6:34AM
Not really. With out the Emotion Engine, Graphics Synthesizer, built in memory card reader (CF, SD, MS Duo), and 4x USB ports found on the 60GB, it's nothing to really write home about; unless there's a massive price drop that allows it to compete with XBOX 360.
devildog820 @ Jun 30th 2009 1:47PM
This would be great, if I didn't already have one...
Joe @ Jun 30th 2009 2:36PM
I have one too, but if this one doesn't suck wind like a Kansas tornado, I might be interested in buying a second one. Seriously, power consumption on the first gen console (and the associated vacuum motor sounds) suck, big time.
Ridgecity @ Jun 30th 2009 2:42PM
well you better sell it fast because if they are getting deliveries this july, they are preparing stock for a fall release. Everyone knows the production problems Sony with demands for their products.
They already got the PS2 software emulator patents last week, it looks like it's full steam ahead for their knight in white armor.
bioadam @ Jun 30th 2009 3:06PM

i wouldn't mind a new PS next year, aslong as PS3 owners get a discount :D
Mike @ Jun 30th 2009 2:02PM
There won't be another PS3 next year, that's a rumour started by Microsoft to attempt at stalling PS3 building sales momentum.
Clearly Microsofts PS3 FUD is starting to wear thin, and people are seeing past it, that actually PS3 is fantastic hardware, fantastic value, and has the best lineup of games this year.
They are also getting the fact, that in 2 years less than Microsoft, Sony has managed to srink from 90nm process to 45nm process, and all the while Microsoft still haven't managed to fix RROD. Guess that's what you get when you buy hardware from a software company. If I bought a car from a washing machine company, I wouldn't be suprised if it broke down all the time.
seanlindo06 @ Jun 30th 2009 2:06PM
As an investor I don't really care which console is better than the other. All I care about is the money, and right now PS3 is in last.
3dpenguin @ Jun 30th 2009 2:33PM
Mike
Microsoft has no reason to fear the PS3 at this point, the 360 is in a much better sales position than the PS3 and Sony has lost almost all of its exclusive developers. To compete Sony is going to have to drop the price of the PS3 down even more making it's recent profitability through game sales none existent again, and this is not even mentioning the quality of each generation of the PS3 has degraded since the first one came out. The FUD being spread about the PS3 is being done so by industry analysts who see no real saving factor for the unprofitable PS3 and the slumping profit margins being encountered by Sony over the past year. And don't go referencing the Joystq analysis showing the PS3 is going to over take the 360 because the only basis given in that is because of its popularity in Japan, which doesn't even make up 1/10 the world market.
Also the smaller cell processors you're referring to weren't even developed by Sony, they were developed by Toshiba's end of STI, Sony pretty much got out of the cell processor market Feb. 2008 when they used their portion of manufacturing and development to buy out Toshiba from the HD video market which was already won by Blu-ray. And those cell processors are all well and good if companies use them, but so far only a handful of devices use them, most prominently the PS3, and they cost 3x the amount to make as a comparable cell core processor (which is what the 360 uses). And the extra power exerted, and used by, those processors are hardly even being used because of the time and expenses used to develop for the things which are primarily needed to do graphics because Sony in their wisdom decided to use the processor for graphics instead of a dedicated GPU which is easier and cheaper to develop for.
Burns11 @ Jun 30th 2009 2:36PM
"As an investor" my ass, you're just a fanboy trying to start bullshit.
As an investor it wouldn't matter at all how the PS3 is selling, you just wouldn't invest in Sony you'd invest in the manufacturing contracts. Foxconn (AKA Hon Hai Precision) was up over 2% overnight because of this rumor/report.
David @ Jun 30th 2009 2:45PM
Uhh who cares if the processor wasn't developed by Sony... he never said that. It's not like Microsoft, or any other company building game consoles/computers develops the processors in-house. Well, maybe Nintendo?
3dpenguin @ Jun 30th 2009 2:53PM
David-
He stated "Sony has managed to srink from 90nm process to 45nm process"
This is untrue.
And you are right about the hardware development, most is developed by contract. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo do very little inhouse development on their systems, the boards, processors, and other cards are all developed and produced by other companies.
BTW Nintendo uses IBM CPUs, and mostlikely boards, and ATI GPUs.
Maeztro @ Jun 30th 2009 4:03PM
@Mike: Did you forget to wear your tinfoil hat again?
It's amazing how these trolls have no idea how the real business world works. And I mean NO idea. Go look for a book called "The Race For A New Game Machine"...read it, then prepare for a test on it.
SugarySnack @ Jun 30th 2009 4:19PM
BTW Mike, Microsoft has solved RROD for the most part. The new consoles do have smaller dies on the CPU and GPU and consume less power. Way to be there champ. Way to be.
David @ Jun 30th 2009 5:23PM
I know what he said.. but I guess I interpreted it differently. The fact is Sony did manage to shrink the processor size because they are the ones who requested/contracted/paid another company to make it happen. I think it's pretty obvious that in most cases money makes things happen. Sony had the money and they made it happen. Did Microsoft have the ability to do this? Yes! They passed it up so I still think it's acceptable to applaud Sony.
Before I get called a fanboy, I own a 360 and not a PS3. Oh and also this whole next gen console thing really hasn't impressed me. The HD switch and the vastness of some of the games is definitely an amazing feat, and the sheer power of these consoles impressive. However I don't think these changed gaming as much as the N64 did (sorry sony!). Oh and I don't have a Wii either soo I'm not exactly a "fan" of anyone. I guess I'm not hardcore enough =(

PS3 was getting price cuts rumors for over a year now,

i wouldn't say its that bad, their xbox 360 rumors are usually right especially about full body motion controller and their new model psp was half right. You can't be right all the time with rumors...i rather hear this rumor and wait to buy my ps3 then buy it now and then find out 'Hey new model new price'
NerD @ Jun 30th 2009 3:29PM

seriously man, its ok. hey...look on the bright side, if you're an american...its almost the 4th of july :)
Mystic @ Jun 30th 2009 1:52PM
Please, this is ridiculous! Sony did the same thing with the PS2.
"First, let's put the power supply IN the box. Then we'll come out with a 'slim' version by putting the power supply on the floor."
And the fanboys eat it up. Same goes for the PSP.
Loonie @ Jun 30th 2009 1:58PM
You have to have the new PSP battery on the floor?
Nomi @ Jun 30th 2009 2:32PM
They eventually put the power supply back in the ps2 and still made it lighter.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 30th 2009 2:34PM
First of all, pics of the shells of the slim showed it to have an IEC-connector-sized hole on the back, so the power supply seems to be internal.
Second of all, the power supply for the PS2 slim is in the unit now (in the US), it was only external for a short while.
Third of all, many people will tell you the Xbox 360 is smaller than the PS3 even though if you count the external power supply it really isn't (at least with the power supplies from the first two years of units, maybe the new ones are smaller), so apparently there is some customer and marketing value to an external power supply.
numerwan @ Jun 30th 2009 1:53PM
But if they just keep saying "Price cuts next month" they'll eventually get it right...
dagamer43 @ Jun 30th 2009 1:56PM
I'm just hoping to see some PS2 emulation love.
penetrode @ Jun 30th 2009 1:57PM
*yawn*
Bundle this slim with Killzone 2 and price it at $199 and Sony might be able climb out of the deep hole it's dug for itself.
but they won't because they're sony.
Gilberto @ Jun 30th 2009 2:48PM
Sure!!! Why not give it for free... 199... lol get a job!
Mo @ Jun 30th 2009 3:18PM
seriously, ferrari's will sell alot more if they were $15k
stfu
E C S Sucks @ Jun 30th 2009 1:59PM

Shenanigans @ Jun 30th 2009 2:00PM

John Doe @ Jun 30th 2009 2:00PM
Price cut + Slimmer PS3 = ALL WIN!!!
PhotoFre@k @ Jun 30th 2009 5:09PM
I just hope that picture isn't just a regular PS3 with more Storage added to it. Price wise, Sony might take out the BR player and replace it with a regular DVD player to cut the cost. Remember PSPgo? They cut quiet a few things and I'm wouldn't be surprise that they kept the current model to sell along side with the new slim. Just saying, no hard feeling.
GerryV @ Jun 30th 2009 9:01PM
Uhhh... what? Replace the Blu-Ray with a DVD drive? That would render the PS3 completely useless as it wouldn't be able to play any games (well, disc-based games, anyway).
Paul @ Jun 30th 2009 2:03PM
Any word on exact price?
AndrewNoNumbers @ Jun 30th 2009 2:16PM
Awesome, an August release, just to coincide with everyone going back to school and not having time to play video games.
Synergy6 @ Jun 30th 2009 2:26PM
If the PS3 Slim came out tomorrow I'd buy it tomorrow. Damn post-summer price cuts.
tyler @ Jun 30th 2009 2:31PM
Are you kidding? I played a lot more video games while I was in school. Gives you a reason to not do hw or go to class.
Ohhh, you mean high school..
jkudlacz @ Jun 30th 2009 5:56PM
Reading all those comments makes me laugh my ass off every time.
Sony makes money on each and every Blu-rey drive because they own rights to it so they would never remove it from their consoles, and besides how would you play your current games DVD drive can't read them.
Sony is not cutting prices till end of summer cause right now parents have no choice and have to buy PS3 with current price sticker.
There is no argument here in relation to which console is more powerful its PS3. Engadget reports about PS3 a lot because what is there to report about in regard to XBOX 360 or Wii. XBOX 360 is getting more RAM and Motion Control sometime next year and Wii will come in black. There you go I just covered all you need to know about those two consoles.
Playstation 2 was an amazing product and many people would like to taste Playstation 3 but it costs so much that many young people and some of us that aren't rich can't afford to pay $399.99
I am not mocking XBOX 360 or Wii cause in their own right they are very good consoles that have exactly what people want for the price they are willing to pay. I got Playstation 3 because it has what I wanted in one package 1080p, wireless ethernet, blu-ray, internal power adapter and most powerful processor.
anexanhume @ Jun 30th 2009 2:20PM
This fits perfectly with the rumors of June availability of 45nm cell processors. I'd say this could be genuine. I only hope it's accompanied by a price cut.
