We haven't heard much about the
PS3 slim since E3, but that doesn't mean it's been entirely quiet out there -- the hot rumor today is that Sony's signed manufacturing agreements with both Foxconn and Pegatron to build the revised model in time for July delivery. That much we believe, since it's been backed up by a couple different credible reports, but here's where it gets totally insane: there's a suggestion that the slim will be the last PS3 model of this generation, and that a next-gen console based on Sony's motion controller is due in spring 2010. We don't buy that at all, since the PS3 is just entering its prime and Sony was clear that
the motion controller was for the existing console, so we think this rumor is getting garbled down the wire -- it's far more likely that the slim is being prepped for an August launch to coincide with
those rumored price cuts, and that new PS3 bundles that include the motion controller are set to drop next year. That's just our take on the matter, though -- we'll see how things shake out.
So what's this PS3 Slim anyways?
They are probably just gonna take the power supply out of the unit. So we'll have slimmer PS3's with a power brick...what's the point..sigh.
The pics show the power supply is in the unit.
the pics show no detail
wrong pics. I'm referring to the pics of the shells from weeks ago. They showed an IEC-sized hole in the shells.
hmm, this would be a good thing if i didn't get a PS3 for christmas last yr. Its been chugging along playing stuff just fine. well, for those who waited to enjoy the awesomeness of the PS3, good for u. hopefully, this slim version is going to be cheaper, or have price cuts on the original thick models.
Sony's PS3 has many issues preventing it from becoming the home console chosen by the majority.
The console's size isn't one of them.
I don't believe there's a new console next year. The July orders stuff I could believe. Be mindful that given the profit margins on PS3s, they'll travel by ship throughout the world, not by air, so if they are delivered in late July, it won't be ready to sell in the US and Europe until some time in August. Probably late August.
I think it will happen before its time for school. There is supposed to be a price drop before Madden comes out... I believe they will also announce GT5 real soon as well and will drop this fall.... as for the new ps3 model that will support the new tech.... i dont know about that but I can believe the slim rumors being eventual reality
GT5 will probably be the only game I own for the PS3.
Thats sad to say.. there are plenty of great games on both HD consoles... if I owned both I would have more than 1 game on each.
I only bought the PS3 at the time because it was the most reliable, and readily available Blu Ray player. I didn't really buy it for gaming. I don't like the controller shape. I have pretty large hands and I prefer the 360 for gaming for that reason. But it won't stop me from picking up the sticks when GT5 comes out.
I'm from Taiwan, and the news source (udn.com) is a Taiwanese news company.
Journalists here have degraded in recent years. They are unprofessional. They are well known to interpret events in their own biased views. Some journalists like to quote their sources "partially", so that the resulting wording is completely altered from its original meaning. Some of them ditch writing alltogether and simply scour the internets for entries written by other people and basically copy-and-paste without permission or acknowledgement.
tl;dr: Journalism is awful in Taiwan, the source of this rumor.
So the point is, the Chinese article does indeed say "new generation consoles" that's due out along with the motion controllers revealed at E3 -- but that's most likely the fault of the journalist responsible for this article. There's 99% chance that he didn't get his facts straight, and thought that Sony announced at E3 a new motion controller for the next generation PS. Unbelievable as it may sound to the rest of the world, mistakes like this are becoming so frequent and common that people no longer take the Taiwanese media seriously, and you should definitely not take their word for word.
still tl;dr: There's no new PS4 rumor, move along.
If the PSP Go is any indication they'll probably want to charge $600 for this instead of slashing the price.
Maybe you should use their previous "Slim" consoles rather than there hand-held experiment as a price marker?
Nice.
My Sony Boner is tingling!
Let's all hope for PS2 compatability. That way I can replace the PS2 sitting on my shelf with a PS3 once the '2 goes south, without the need for more shelf space/cables, etc.
lame... fail... get a life!
If this will help with Sony having a price-drop, well so be it, right now the only thing making it sell low is the price, Sony we don't want to go out and work to get a console. Other than the price, PS3 is worthy gaming console.
I can honestly say that I desperately want a PS3, and seeing this makes me want one even more. But until Sony makes the smart move and drops the price (I mean an actual price drop, not this bundling BS) I will not be buying one. Most of the games that I want to play that are exclusive to the PS3 aren't coming out until next year, and other than the blu-ray, there's just not enough incentive for me to purchase one right now, especially at $400.
well, considering blu ray players cost $400 much of the time, with ps3 ur getting a game machine and loads of other crap at the same price, just something to think about.
I disagree. You can get a decent (Sony) blu-ray player on Amazon for $200-$250; my wife and I bought one for my parents for Christmas. And while you have a valid point that it's also a gaming platform, right now there aren't that many exclusive titles that make it worth the price tag. Lil Big Planet & MGS4 are the only games that I consider system sellers, and even then, I personally think that I can wait for these titles if it means I can save $100 or more.
@braindead360
So if you can get a blu-ray player for $250, that leaves $150 out of the $400 it would cost you to buy a PS3.
Tell me, what console could you buy for $150?
Finally, it's criminal how people STILL keep saying 'PS3 has no games'......what games do you like? :)
Anyway, over here in good old blighty, a PS3 will set you back £299 (POUNDS) and that is still fantastic value for money IMO.
@ Phil
If someone isn't interested in gaming, and can save $150 getting another Bluray player, they can use the extra $150 to purchase other things. When you ask, "what console could you buy for $150?" the answer would be, "NONE!" That is $150 leftover for other things, like movies, or food, or beer, or a hooker.
@JayVe
Obviously my point was aimed at someone interested in gaming aswell as movies :-)
i plan on getting a ps3 in the next calendar year, a slimline ps3 with a lower price would give it new life i think................MARKET IT CORRECTLY THIS TIME AND SHOW THE WORLD HOW GOOD OF A VALUE IT IS!!!! and sony, DONT LET XBOX 360 LOGOS GET THE END OF MULTIPLATFORM GAME COMMERCIALS!!!
cant wait to see the ps3 slim, ps3 is already a fascination of engineering and design, the rumor has to be true since its been going on forever and it does sound pretty damn legit. i think it will be shown at that show in the summer, whenever it is, where they showed the ps2 slim as well. hopefully the picture on that box isnt it, doesnt look too nice. probably a prototype, who knows
Stop Comparing
Stop comparing xbox to PS3. The PS3 is a better all around system on all levels. I'm really dissapointed Sony is launching the slim this early. This is a really bad move. The market is not saturated yet. When the larger PS3 hits 199 xbox will be nothing more then a few lines in a book of consoles. Everyone who raves about Xbox will soon forget they mentioned the name. The seas will part and all those who are a slave to Microsoft marketing will walk the path in to the light of a true next Generation console.
Oh Sony... why couldn't you just put an infa-red port on your Blu-Ray player... that's all I'm using the PS3 for. The games are lackluster. Someone needs to sort out something with loading times and the fact that I need to update all my games almost every time I turn the console on. The PS3 was the last Sony product I'll ever buy. The Cross Media bar is atrocious. For some reason, only Americans can make a decent OS. Lame... done. I guess the pre-requisite "I'm not a fanboy" proof comes in here, so: I have a PS3 and a Bravia TV (once again... never again, Sony).. I also have a Wii that I also never play, of course.
Stop complaining and make your own or buy something else, I doubt Sony care what you have to think just like all other companies.
"The games are lackluster."
The games are lackluster to certain console owners who can't get enough of certain shooters on a specific system, or who don't do any gaming to start with. But outside of America and the UK, the story is the exact opposite.
"I need to update all my games almost every time I turn the console on."
I have 14 games and counting, and this is true of none of them. Maybe "all" those games are lame multiplats, or maybe you're just making stuff up. Perhaps I could offer some contrast with my 360 Leet experience: M$ designed a new board which fixed virtually zero flaws, and has some of the worst quality on the planet. As a result, my hand controller was bad out of the box, the flimsy and proprietary force feedback wheel broke in seven weeks, and the Leet died a week later. My two year old 60GB PS3 is still roaring along just fine, and works with my Logitech wheel controller - which by the way hasn't broken for a long, LONG time.
Regardless, SONY pretty much stole the show at E3, unless you were wowed by Natal's smoke and mirrors lagdemo, or want to play with Milo in ways I won't get into. The games have been great so far, but the bar is rising through the roof this fall. But since people will only spend money on cheap consoles here in America, it seems the cheaper PS3 slim is inevitable.
@Ramkanda

It appears to me that at long last there may actually be a next-gen "war" on the horizon. It's been handbags at six paces up until now. Remember when PS1 and N64 dropped the price by 50% overnight (from $399 AUD to $199 AUD) which sent Sega into a spiral it couldn't recover from. Remember when Sega used to release ground breaking (yet crap) upgrades to the Megadrive every so often to put the burner on the SNES. Well we haven't seen much of that lately. Xbox's price drops have been marginal and overdue (in Oz at least), and PS3 prices have been exorbitant all the way. A concerted effort from these manufacturers to grab market share is what we've all needed and perhaps it's finally at hand.
Man, a PS3 slim with a 120 gig HDD a month after I buy an 80 gig?! Ah, fuck my life. Maybe they'll be about 200 bucks for if my PS3 messes up. Fingers crossed.
there is no fantastic lineup for PS3 give up sony and merge with microsoft u are already losing all your main titles all thats left is Metal Gear, Tekken, and Castlevania oh wait thats too late u guys can have resistance, Infamous, god of war and little crap planet...which would be surprising if they came to which is inevitablely they will....by the way wats with PSN does anyone even use it (waited forever to play ranked match in COD) is the content worth it? no... free service=crap....and Bluray most of the movies only do 720p not as fast n dont have anymore feautures than a DVD so whats the point of a PS3? there is none...got greedy with taking blueray for themselves failed and MS n Nintendo outsells them constantly and soon the losses for that system will cause them to rid of it....u guys keep the merger offer with MS we'll take Nintendo anyday since they show way more promise in all aspects in the videogame industry...and thats my cents for today :D
lol fan boy much DBCar 83? you prolly haven't played most of those games.
everyones comments on this article are sickening both sony fanboys and microsoft fan boys.
I know most of you with xbox have it modded already. at least 80% of readers here do. this is not a none-geek blog so yeah. The reason many people buy xbox is because they know someone who knows someone who could hack it and make it play free games.
Microsoft knows this game well, Give pirates free stuff and your sales will grow with the regular users.
look at windows
new ps3 bundle mgs4 and kz2 with the 80gb model at the price of 400$ not really a price cut but it looks like someone is trying to get rid of all their 80gb model perhaps for something new maybe a ps3 slim maybe not but the point here is that included in the bundle is about 90$ worth of games and you are getting it for the same price as you would buy a regular 80gb model so there must be something coming i think it will most likely be a price cut but who knows
BTW this deal is only offered at bestbuy so far u can go to bestbuy.com and type in ps3 bundle to see for yourself
