I love listening to this podcast--gdgt is alright, but I think Josh, Nilay and Paul can be pretty funny.
Plus, cool opening tunes.
Hell yeah!
Awesome!
Microsoft is the Apple of video games...
It's out, you can't hide the truth!
I was surprised to hear Paul Miller (I think it was Paul Miller) say that his Blackberry curve 8900 couldn't do IMAP with his gmail. My Blackberry 8830 world edition does IMAP just fine with Gmail. If I read an email on my blackberry it shows up at read when I check gmail on my computer, and when I send email with my blackbeery I can see the sent email on my computer and vice versa.
I do not use the gmail app to read & send gmail emails, I use the native blackberry app. When I get an email my blackbeery vibrates and the red light flashes (the gmail app doesn't do these things to my knowledge).
So Paul, any idea why IMAP works for me and not for you? I'm not trying to rub it in, I'm genuinely curious as I'm considering buying an unlocked 8900 and don't want to run into this problem.
Is this a feature the 8830 has that the 8900 curve doesn't? Or is gmail IMAP support something that the carrier decides to support or not to support.
Hey, that was me, and as far as I know, BlackBerry OS only supports one-way IMAP -- changes sync from device to server, not back down. That means if you read an email on the desktop, it won't show up as read on the BB, forcing you to do all your mail management on the handheld. Plus it doesn't support IMAP folders / labels, so everything just winds up in the inbox regardless of whatever filters you might have set up. It's essentially useless.
There could be some hack or something I don't know about, but I haven't been able to find anything -- and even if there is a solution, it's sort of ridiculous that it's not the default behavior.
Nilay Patel,
Ah, I see what you mean now. Thanks for explaining it to me. I had set that blackberry up for a friend thinking it had true IMAP. Now I know doesn't really do IMAP correctly.
Including a higher quality lens on the Olympus would have increased the cost significantly. They likely made a decision between having the audio issue or increasing the cost by an additionally $300. This camera will likely be much better in a second revision. Though a firmware update giving access to higher brightness levels could fix the screen issue somewhat. A 3.5mm mic jack would also be an easy and cheap inclusion.
Facebook 3.0 for iPhone will have the event features paul so desires
Great, once again guys! I completely agree, with the Dell/Android Unlocked handset idea... I would be next to buy one!
I definitely agree. If I wasn't stuck with Verizon, I'd jump on that handset as soon as it came out.
Regarding the android keyboard:
Download "better keyboard" from the market. Its way better than stock. The latest version now works with all android versions, even the rogers version. Its awesome.
Regarding HTC magic RAM:
There are 2 versions of the htc magic. One has 192megs of RAM and the other has 288megs of RAM. The google ion phone as well as the tmobile mytouch ONLY has 192megs of RAM. The rogers htc magic has 288megs of RAM.
Excellent smartphone OS discussion. I was happy to hear you guys rank S60 and WM at the bottom, and BB OS third to last. Every year since 2007, BB OS gets passed by another OS. In 2007, it was Iphone. In 2008, it was Android. In 2009, it was WebOS. In 2010, if Microsoft can get their shit together, it will be WM7.
The people that I talk to that love their BBs say they don't really need to use a good browser or that the browser is adequate. I can't relate to that at all. I spend most of my time using the browser on my smartphone.
To be completely honest, I don't often listen to engadget audio blogs precisely because it's almost always all about phones, and if I want that.. well there's women for starters.
The Mexican stereotypes made me cringe
It was a bunch of hispanic guys yelling in spanish and doing construction work... that's not a stereotype, that's what was happening outside my window.
Time to start to support the Firefox3.5/HTMLl5 inbuilt audio play functionality? Or is OGG too big?
Fun to listen to podcast, but very disappointing when I heard you guys talking about the cameras that can compare to the EP1. the G10 does not have the same sensor as a DSLR, the G10 is nothing but a point and shoot with a bunch of manual controls, to put in in DPreview words 'a sheep in wolf clothes'.
Other than that slip up, the rest was enjoyable, got me through my gym session. :D
