Sneak peek at Meizu M8's new user interface

Heads up, Meizu fanboys! We just got a sneak peak at the M8's new UI (said to be dropping in August when the handset gets its firmware update) and you know what? It looks like a UI. Pretty k-rad, right? Check out the other two face-melting pics after the break, if you dare.

Are you telling this is meant to be a knock off phone?????
WOW standards are pretty high
Barney, seriously, WTF?! o_O
It looks more and more like the Pre, from iPhone's OSX.
I was about to say that pollen background looks awfully familiar.
I see HTC, Apple and Palm styling in there.
Yay lol
Some Samsung too. Yep, definitely some Samsung in there too.
I also see some LG, Nokia and a smidgeon of SE styling.
Can you say "Copycat"? *Bounces right eyebrow*
When it looks like 12 different things, it doesn't look like anything.
i agree with joe, all UIs look at least a little like some others, but that doesn't make them copies.
OMG it has icons! that's so unoriginal!
Maybe all of the Pre/iPhone/WM/Blackberry fans can be friends and buy this phone..
Wait, who am I kidding?
Wow, this looks... quite nice actually. Simple layout, nice transparency, well done icons, etc. This is far better than the UI I've seen on touch phones from Samsung and LG.
these aren't screenshots these are mockups... once you put these on a cheap 240*400 screen they would look as horrendous as any samsung or LG UI
Except the screen is 720 x 480...
oooooh internets burn
The screenshots on Engadget are already reduced in size, on the phone the resolution is higher. I've seen it and it's nothing short of brilliant. (Too bad the rest of the phone isn't.)
That actually looks surprisingly nice. They should stop trying to make knock-offs, and make the real thing. :)
A lot of electronics companies in China start off making cheap knock-off products, then start their own R&D after accumulating enough money and assets.
I agree. About time mainland China pulled a HTC on us.
It may be a mixed bag, but it looks good. :)
Copying other products is how Japanese and Korean manufacturers started off too. But I don't think the UI is much of a copy at all; it is beautiful in its own right.
Looks... familiar...
iknowright? They totally ripped off the Pre!
And the pre ripped off OSX so you are correct :)
and since the iphone os ripped off palm os he is more correct.
Yeah, this does look way too familiar ...
I've totally seen flowers exactly like that at the Botanical Garden. Sheesh these guys can't even grow their own flowers huh?
And since the Palm OS ripped off the Apple Newton, you're super duper correct!
Palm did not rip off osx, perhaps you have been misinformed webos is a linux based os and for those who do not know mac uses alot of the open source code and ideas in their operating system, just saying go play with ubuntu and then tell me who ripped of who.
at this point, shouldn't nice looking user interfaces and legible fonts be the norm for all relatively costly devices? besides, aesthetics aren't everything (windows vista is very nice looking imo, but so troublesome to use)
O_o ok...
Aaron said it. In my opinion samsung and lg´s touch ui´s look and feel very confusing.
But this on hte other hand looks nice and clean.
Pretty neat.
looks decent, but I can't wait until the iPhone UI stops getting copied so much. I know that was Meizu's idea from the get-go, but I think I'm getting tired of a pile of icons to choose from. I wonder what that new UI on the HTC Dream will look like. I'm also getting more and more curious about WinMo 7. They did such a good job with Windows 7 so far, and the competition is fierce in the mobile market, that I have a feeling WM7 will be miles ahead of 6.5... which really only means that it might finally compete with the new wave of smartphone OS's in the consumer market.
I mean, when did these companies think it was a good idea to just dump launchers for all of your apps in one place? Whatever happened to tools, options, apps, games, you know, categories?
Go back inside, Grandpa.
Is anybody actually using a weather app on IPOS/WM/Android/WebOS/Symbian/whatever ? Just wondering... Sorry for offtopic
Accuweather on the Pre is quite nice looking. I'd still like something with animated radar though. We get big storms in Texas. Having radar on the road would be nice.
Right! Never thought of that, sorry!
Back when i had my ipod touch the first tying i would do when i woke up is check the weather. Just something to do.
I use it everyday on my iPhone...
Any time I'm at the airport.
WorldMate is better,
it reads it out loud in the morning
Awfully familiar, but this can be good. You can get the use of it a lot faster.
I like it.
Great, another Pre clone. Doesn't anyone have any originality anymore?
I think your pic could definitely come off as racist...to most people
Actually, most people consider it a parody of a popular poster. You are the first person who's mentioned anything about race.
"I think your pic could definitely come off as racist...to most people"
Right, because it always has to do with race and not policy, right? Are you one of those tools that thinks anyone that didn't vote for your guy is a racist?
Its because he's a lawyer and he wants your money... imagine an entire career living as leech to the rest of society by finding ways anybody offends black people I mean AFRICAN AMERICANS then suing them for money and taking up to 50% of the winnings as commission... at least he's going to hell so I cant complain
Hey Nilay!
You banned that guy for having an opinion about Michael Jackson a few days ago, how about banning someone who deserves it?
I love the music icon, that old school record.
What's a....record? ;- )
Says a lot about Palm's UI that this lot have become more (*cough!) "inspired" by it than the iPhone's design.
it may look good but you need to feel how responsive it is... it won't be good if the whole thing lags, IYKWIM.
IKWYM.
Acronym. Stands for "If you know what I mean". Mainly used in instant messaging conversations. Can also be used in conjunction with "AITYD" (and I think you do).
This is a prime example of how ridiculous internet abbreviations for chat / forum / messaging are getting.
from URBAN DICTIONARY
The language of young people today tsk tsk. Im 18 and when i hear all these new fang dangled abbreviations it makes me feel old and out of touch :-P
I thought i was cool learning lol and lmao in my day :-P
My biggest peeve apart from abbreviations i dont understand is PeOpLe WhO TaLk LiKe ThIs.
Whats with all the "this is nice for a knockoff" comments? I've been living in China for a year now and this is obviously NOT a knockoff, NOT a KIRF. Yes, they make some pretty slick looking I-phone and Samsung knockoffs here, but the harware sucks and the UI is usually only half-copied with the home/today screen about as much of the original UI that you see. The M8 however has a nice case, nice hardware, and a a complete UI thats about as much of a copy from the I-phone as some of LG's phones (cant remember the models). Additionally, it has the price point to match. The KIRF I-phones you see run about 500-700 RMB which is approximately $75-$100. The M8 runs about $2100 RMB last I checked which is a little over $300.
Simple and elegant, all devices are starting to look this way and I like it.
Holy Shit! This GUI is groundbreaking! It will the change industry forever, it will change society, it will change everything as we know it!!! Never in the history of mankind has a GUI been so incredibly awesome!!!
看起来不错噢~继续努力~~
Speak English or get out!!!!
Or you can learn some Chinese, it might do you some good, for starters, you won't be so pissed and rude.
or you can just nod your head and go "yep i totally agree"
learn some Chinese , dude.
Translation: It doesn't look bad, continue to work hard on it.
copy the best of best?
ya sounds easy doesn't it.Tell that to windows mobile.......
I really like the icons, especially the music and record one..... I know that was not the greatest comment, but I felt that I needed to say it.
As for the interface looking like it was stolen, I have to say that even my old motorolla phone (2003) had an icon set up like such, along with the top bar. As for the bar on the bottom, that was on all the palm pilots back in the day. Basically everyone has been copying each other, and we should get over it.
............. ...that's great
nice if only they had a bottom scrolling bar i see apple and android
So my comments aren't showing up... I'll try again. It would be nice if thos theme was released on winterboard.
I think so.
But fact is copy is evolution.
Once up on a time.
There is company call Acorn Computers made think call Iconbar.
Then some thing call Kde - Kicker
Then Windows - Quick Launch and Gnome - Panel (i don't know witch one first).
Then Apple modify it and call Dock.
After that Microsoft modify it for windows 7 and call Super Bar.
+1 Epics for mentioning Acorn Computers. Not only did they invent ARM but they made some kickass hardware for the time. I have an A5000! Win :D
it makes the iphone look dated....
Your point in sound, over the years the lines blur between who is copying and who is innovating.
That said, I think you have it all a little muddled.
A cursory glance at Wikipedia reveals that the NeXTSTEP Dock was first launched in 1988, almost a decade before the KDE project even started. You also missed that the Windows 1.0 Dock, launched in 1983, again a few years before Acorn's “Iconbar”.
This is a great site for learning about GUIs if you are interested:

Not bad....
I would like to put this onto the i8910 HD.
Do want.
Calender? Really?
I guess asians are destined to make spelling mistakes everywhere, even when you think all your base are belong to us.
wow这新闻 是主站也有啊 我是M8用户 o(∩_∩)o...
it looks like a set of Windows XP replacement icons you would find on deviantart ca. 2001.
Anybody have that wallpaper? It looks like a nice GUI even if it does draw from other sources.
If they could actually make one of those with USA 3G bands, and use their low upfront manu cost to sell them at a reasonable rate unlocked (199 USD) shipped. I for one would love to be able to pick one of these up to play around with while I traveled. The nice thing about China is, they don't have to deal with many of those pesky American patents, so there is a chance someday, all the cool things you get from each brand of phone (The insane Nokia batteries, the Iphone screen, the Sony Cameras, open Android OS) could be put together by a Chinese OEM and you could actually end up with a pretty sweet Franken phone that you could pick up cheap.
Don't underestimate a culture that's been around for 1,000s of years, anyone who think's the Chinese are stupid have another thing coming. While much of the crap that comes out of China's OEMs is junk, you are starting to see the quality of the upper tier OEMs getting better and better.
No edit function
I meant 299 USD, no way were getting it cheaper imported then they are local. My bad.
I still think if they managed to work over the whole UI to be responsive, and give us some of the cool things Chinese home grown phones get (Dual SIMs, Micro SD slots, swappable battery) it would be a neat device.
anyone else noticed they misspelled calendar in the UI? typical...
