Colorware offers up $6,000 Stealth MacBook Pro: it's really dark
Colorware's well known for offering up all sorts of consumer electronics in all sorts of hues, but the outfit has definitely stepped up its game with the Stealth MacBook Pro. This limited edition piece is an all-black 15-inch MacBook Pro with a matte display, 3.06GHz CPU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 256GB SSD, an 8x SuperDrive, zero gloss finish and a SofTouch coating that'll make it downright impossible for your fingers to stop stroking it. Reportedly, these will be limited to just ten units, and each one will cost a not-at-all affordable $5,999. See Apple, this is what you get when you voluntarily axe the BlackBook. Opportunity, lost.

The 256mb SSD turns me off.
Barney @ Jul 4th 2009 4:17PM
I love I can actually be in front page!
Sly @ Jul 4th 2009 4:18PM
same.
robogobo @ Jul 4th 2009 4:44PM
Yeah, when you double the price of a computer just for a new paintjob, it'd be nice to bump up the specs a bit.
loci @ Jul 4th 2009 5:24PM
just think what you could blog with that!
Erik @ Jul 4th 2009 6:25PM
Whats the difference between ssd and harddrive?
AMiSH PiRATE @ Jul 4th 2009 6:57PM
Erik, solid state is faster & more expensive then a hard disk drive. It's also less prone to mechanical break down (what with the no-moving-parts), but it has a limited number of times it can be written to.
Did I get that right, my fellow nerds?
Gad Get @ Jul 4th 2009 7:08PM
@ AMiSH
More or less correct, although the limited writes is never going to be an issue, realistically. You did forget to mention that SSDs use less power and are silent.
qwerty613 @ Jul 5th 2009 12:20AM
It's 256 GB, not MB.
AMiSH PiRATE @ Jul 5th 2009 1:01AM
@ Gad Get
Appreciate the respectful add-ons. I felt awkwardly unprepared responding to a tech question (what with my name and all). Avast!
@ qwerty613
engadget doesn't always add an update section when correcting their typos. so don't be a douche, but rather, assume comments that are seemingly inaccurate yet still highly ranked have some merit.
@ Monster Cable
You guys suck and you know it. So fuck you, and America rules!
loosely_coupled @ Jul 5th 2009 5:00AM
For that price, it better not be the crappy OEM drive from Apple.. a Corsair P256 or OCZ Vertex minimum..
Nick @ Jul 5th 2009 12:01PM
@ Gad Get, @AMiSH PiRATE
It indeed has no moving parts, so the real difference between SSD and HDD is that SSD uses flash storage (just like memorysticks for example). On the contrary, an HDD uses a (glass?) disc spinning around to read from and write to and thus is more prone to mechanical breakdowns.
ryan.atallah @ Jul 5th 2009 3:22PM
I did the math- when you order a macbook pro with the same specs from apple, you end up with a $4,250 computer. So these folks just added the fancy finish and a "limited edition" label for $1,750.
supertux @ Jul 5th 2009 3:13PM

You've got to figure in the matte screen too.

I'd love to install mail.app in that machine~
wat up!!! @ Jul 4th 2009 7:01PM
yeah specially since each gig is 1024egabytes!!!!
lol....
meh.. the specs to price ratio is such a turn off.... granted its 1000 for 8gb on the apple store website..

This is the only macbook I would ever consider buying. Those silver aluminum Macbook Pros on campus are just too much.

ew. all black makes it look so plebian
Mike C @ Jul 4th 2009 4:39PM
As opposed to your beige with Louis XIV gryphon corners?
Considering everything under the sun is now super glossy, matte black is more avant garde than "plebian".
Good day sir.
[on a side note, if I had 6 grand, this would definitely get me to switch from Windows...]
Cy Starkman @ Jul 4th 2009 6:33PM
Plebian? What a curious word to apply to such a custom device.
I've been to these guys website before. That's no plebian effort my friend. What they do is something special.
U can send ur own rig/pmp/phone/console to them, it's cheaper that way, get a red MacBook or a yellow and blue zune or a pink blackberry with white buttons
Ian @ Jul 4th 2009 8:18PM
Can someone photoshop this notebook into a photo of the interior of a Starbucks? Before I spend $6000 on a colour, I want to know whether or not it looks like $3000 worth of douche-baggedness.
Otherwise, I'll stick with my regular MacBook Pro, thanks.

I'll just say it - that is hot. Crazy overpriced, yes, but... hot.
Gad Get @ Jul 4th 2009 7:14PM
This is definitely what the Macbook should be. I would buy one if it was reasonably affordable (and there were more than 10 units in the world).
tyama9390 @ Jul 4th 2009 4:34PM
I believe its pronounced "thang"
Just being difficult... @ Jul 5th 2009 1:46AM
Yes, but it's spelled "thing"...

You sure it ain't "thong"?

If I only had the cash! I certainly would pay the price for the 17" MacBook Pro but I'd take a pass on the SSD!
I'd rather have a 7200RPM - 500GB instead of an SSD any day, I'm not a gamer so i wouldn't need the speed. Plus ever since I got rid of my LAST TRUE MAC, a 17" PowerBook G4 1.67GHz and splurged on my Dell XPS M1210's, M1710 and M1730 I didn't think I'd ever want a PowerBook/MacBook Pro ever again until I saw this.
This is getting my nipples HARD!
Al @ Jul 4th 2009 7:12PM
Would you care to elaborate how the 17in Powerbook was the last true mac?
anl @ Jul 4th 2009 8:21PM
HIS last true mac. Not THE last true mac.
JLG1985 @ Jul 5th 2009 3:49PM
1st of all - typical fanboys trolling along as usual!
2nd of all - Weren't Apple the very people to proclaim the PowerPC SUPERIOR in every way comapred to an Intel Processor/
3rd fo all - Were you TROLLS even born yet to remember all the claims Apple made about it's supposed superiority?
4th of all - That's what made Apple the "THINK DIFFERENT" company that dubbed every other ODM out there boring WINTEL drones, just watch the famous 1984 Super Bowl Commecial (if I'm correct on the year it first appeared!)
5th and LASTLY - Wasn't the marketing geniuses that suckered every fanboy boy, and even YOU, your mommy and daddy's wet dream at the time, into believing everything they did was SOooo innovative while they actually copied everything from MS, and IBM at that time and point in history and rebranded it as an "APPLE".
That's why Apple still has had relatively small percentage in the PC Market until the last couple of few years because of you wet dream frat boys that have to keep up with the Joneses!
loocas @ Jul 4th 2009 4:35PM
What is soooooo not affordable here? This is pretty much a standard price for Apple xxxPro products here in Europe. If I bought this black book in the US, I'd pay pretty much the same as I would for a regular MBP (with the same specs of course)...
