BenQ S6 MID back for vengeance... XP-style
The BenQ S6 MID didn't exactly light the world on fire when it was launched back in 2008, and although we assumed it had faded into irrelevance along with the rest of the category, it looks like the company's bringing it back -- preloaded with Windows XP instead of Linux. It actually makes a certain insane kind of sense, since the S6 is built on an Atom processor, but we're just not sure anyone wants to pay $424 for XP on a 4.8-inch screen with an 800MHz processor -- especially since you'll have to fly to Taiwan to pick one up. On the other hand, can you really put a price on "100% Web Experience?"

YAY! A WinBoy!

I dont see the problem with XP and an 800Mhz cpu. I have windows 7 on a Samsung q1 ultra (A110 cpu) with 2GB memory and it runs fine. It even plays 720p video with coreavc and MPC-HC, although the audio/video goes out of sync. :)

Actually looking at it again, it looks like that Genesis Mobile device...I think it's called Genesis Nomad... but for XP. Bring on FLIGHT SIMULATOR BABEH!
(man I wish there was an EDIT button...) ICE CREAM FOR ALL!

WVGA and $424... no way...

"100% Web Experience" with IE? Don't make me laugh... bitterly.
Epsilon-Not @ Jul 12th 2009 7:58PM
Though, it IS XP, so presumably you can toss the browser of your choice on there.
Boards of Canada @ Jul 12th 2009 8:39PM
You prefer Safari crashing on you all the time? Installing Firefox is always the first move when installing XP.
xKatz @ Jul 12th 2009 8:06PM
What is the point of MIDs. A netbook is a better bang for your buck than this POS. $424 is a f---ing joke.

Its pocketable.

If this things runs Maple 12, just give a discount and I'll buy.
Veddervan @ Jul 12th 2009 8:19PM
Although the video is obviously crappy, it looks pretty convincing...

I actually see no point for these, AND refuse to listen to points, as good as they may be. I just feel like being stubborn.

Theoretical:
"100% Web Experience"
Actual:
100% Web Exp~ Internet Explorer cannot load the page. Operation Aborted.
^
Reminds me, when downloading something from sourceforge using IE it wouldn't download saying, and I quote "A system call that should never fail has failed."
thomasgraves2 @ Jul 12th 2009 8:36PM
Hope when and if it hits US the price is much lower.
V Langs @ Jul 12th 2009 8:47PM
you know, with a drivers disk and an XP lite os
this would run rather smoothly...
anndd firefox would work wonders, though (don't shoot me...)IE8 is actually quite nice... :-( and I own a mac... :-(
oh god i'm just full of lose tonight
strider_mt2k @ Jul 12th 2009 9:32PM
Grab me one while you're over there? :D

MIDs only make sense as smartphones with big honkin' screens. Pretending that it would be remotely useful as a computer is dooming the class to failure.
It's the apps, stupid.

4.8 inch is ok, but border size too large. and, I just need a well browser, I don't want a full load OS on my pocket.
(I don't want more security update, anti-virus, reboot..... I just need a well browser! )
Vidrazor @ Jul 16th 2009 5:54PM
I would like to have one of these, but all of the pocketables have a glaring omission - a webcam! You would think in this day and age they'd have to sense to put a webcam on these damned things. I can easily see myself pulling this out of my pocket and Skyping friends and family from the 'ol cafe...
kingu @ Jul 13th 2009 7:02AM
No, maketh sense does it not, correct.
Tom @ Jul 13th 2009 7:25AM
Why would they make this??? In a world where the Viliv S5 and X70 live, sure they cost a bit more but then you get something useful,...
Touchscreen, 1024x600, GPS, HD playback and LONG (6hr) battery life in a tiny package.
Come on BenQ, just copy the Vilivs and one up with them with better battery life.

Samsungs new Omnia 2 smartphone has the same 800 MHz with a 3.7 AMOLED power-saving screen. And it has the full "web experience" so this thing is already obsolete
