Rock delivers BD / Core i7-equipped Xtreme 790 and Xtreme 840 gaming laptops
Can you believe it? It's been practically a year to the day since we've seen any new fragging machines from the lads over at Rock, but thankfully things are still moving after being rescued by a rolling Stone. The latest duo to take Europe by storm involves the Xtreme 790 and Xtreme 840, both of which can be outfitted with NVIDIA's 1GB GeForce GTX 280M (or two of 'em, if you're feeling froggy), Blu-ray drives, 6GB of DDR3 RAM, WiFi, four USB 2.0 sockets, an HDMI port, Windows Vista (with a gratis upgrade to Win7 this October), a 7-in-1 card reader, 3TB of HDD space and a 3-year on-site warranty. Heck, you can even toss a Core i7 in there if you think your legs are calloused enough to handle it. Both machines can be ordered up right now, with the 790 range starting at £1,999 ($3,258) and the less extravagant 840 line picking up at £1,699 ($2,769).

What's the battery life like? 2 minutes on power-saving settings?
Irritant @ Jul 14th 2009 11:16AM
Insert many other huge laptops/no battery life comments here. These laptops are for people who want a desktop powered computer that that can transport easily and serious gamers who like to attend Lan Parties. They'd never run them off batteries and they might as well be made without them.
Agent .25i @ Jul 14th 2009 11:39AM
Yup, like Irritant said. I could care less for the battery in this. (m1710) If anything, the battery is more of a convenience for if I have to move to a different room in the house.
Nice to see a DRT that finally trumps the one Ive had for the last 3 years.
Not sure of how fond I am of all the shiny, and lack of a recessed track pad area though.
Are those exhaust ports in the front? And while on that subject, why dont more manufactures add air intakes on the top as well as bottom/sides? Like my XPS here. You hear them sucking in the air when you have this on your lap, or on a soft surface like the couch or bed.
crsh @ Jul 14th 2009 1:34PM
And now I understand why companies like Alienware still exist thanks to you two.
njen @ Jul 14th 2009 5:29PM
These are not just for LAN parties. I work in the computer graphics industry, often working contracts between 3 to 6 months all over the world. I need power, and I need portability, and these types of laptops give me what I need.
So yeah, can everyone from now on stop with these types of comments. There is a viable, justified market for these things without people making silly comments about the battery or weight.
loosely_coupled @ Jul 14th 2009 7:53PM
Exactly, I wish these companies would just ditch the large battery, and just use a tiny 1 or 2 cell battery just for the purpose of keeping the laptop running if the power goes out or your cord gets disconnected. Basically, it would give you enough time to find power or shut down the machine without having a sudden power loss to the system. standard laptop batteries in these machines are pointless, and just add weight.

If they do that, more people like crsh will probably go haywire and rant about it's battery life.
Nerdy Desi @ Jul 14th 2009 11:16AM
That's still impressive in my book.
rezaudio @ Jul 14th 2009 11:19AM
Oh baby!
TJ @ Jul 14th 2009 11:24AM
I am getting SO tired of glossy smooth trackpads. Give me something tactile, like that bumpy one on the new Thinkpad.
Nerdy Desi @ Jul 14th 2009 11:26AM
One thing I like about the glossy trackpads is that they will stay glossy, unlike the sufaced, matte trackpads that will eventually smooth out through prolonged use.
musback @ Jul 15th 2009 6:44AM
@ Nerdy: indeed!
Rob @ Jul 14th 2009 11:38AM
Why is this news? Firstly, the 790 is a rebrand of the Clevo D900F (which is already on the market) and the 840 is the Clevo M980NU (agian already shipping) the Clevo D900F ships with the Core i7 and only one 280m gtx while the Clevo M980NU can have 280m gtx in SLI but has the mobile Core 2 Duo in it. These are the same machines that were announced back in January, have been on pre-order since May and shipping from other companies since the mid June.
jasongst @ Jul 14th 2009 11:38AM
First mistake: They shifted all the keys to the right. Most gamers have their keyboards off to the left a bit. Second, I don't think those Apple-style keys are going to offer enough tactile feedback. It's difficult to know if your hands are on the correct keys.
I guess this is intended for people using a controller? Or one of those gaming keypad addons?
Anticrawl @ Jul 14th 2009 11:46AM
Maybe it's just you. Every LAN party and gaming tournament I've ever attended gamers have their keyboard adjusted towards the far right to shorten the distance between their mouse and WASD keys. On my setup I have the keyboard a level below my mouse so I can maximize this setup.
teej @ Jul 14th 2009 12:15PM
is that a Titan?
blipmusic @ Jul 14th 2009 12:24PM
Nope, it's a Gallente Tech 3 cruiser so you're a bit off size wise.
ProphetSix @ Jul 14th 2009 2:21PM
That's a Templar, an Amarr fighter......
Bob Aman @ Jul 14th 2009 2:24PM
Nah, it's a Proteus.
JWC @ Jul 14th 2009 3:18PM
Good to know that Eve ships still look like a**.
GingerFox @ Jul 14th 2009 12:17PM
3TB of HDD space, what size/capacity/number of drives are they using?
Oli D @ Jul 14th 2009 4:24PM
I did wonder that myself. I cannot believe that it can take 2 1.5Tb Desktop drives, the alternative is apparently 6 500Gb 2.5"s
xValentine @ Jul 14th 2009 10:42PM
They forgot to mention the "External HD" part
;P
Oli D @ Jul 15th 2009 5:21PM
Serious?
Josh @ Jul 14th 2009 2:27PM
What game is on the screen?
Samboini @ Jul 14th 2009 4:37PM
IRL
magezap @ Jul 14th 2009 7:11PM
EVE Online I think....
10minutehobo @ Jul 14th 2009 5:45PM
Starting from $3,258?
Hell, I'll take three. One for the bedroom, one for the office, and one for the kitchen.
aaron @ Jul 14th 2009 6:37PM
Awesome, but I'm thinking...if this company goes under again...is my warranty useless? :/
Indefinite Implosion @ Jul 15th 2009 1:02AM
hey, don't be doubting, this is a solid company, that's well founded
:P
Bill @ Jul 15th 2009 2:00AM
Just so you guys know these are Clevos (of course) and if the reseller you buy from goes under if they don't completely suck you will get warranty coverage moved to a different reseller. (automatically)
Extreme Notebooks went under and my D901C is under warranty still with a different company (I forget who at the moment though)
Warranty or not you can get spare parts and stuff from Sager, powernotebooks, etc if you buy a clevo.
Josh @ Jul 15th 2009 11:00AM
Is it me or that keyboard looks like an Asus keyboard? (look at their U series)
