Guitar Hero 5 drum kit is faux real
Aaand it's out, the first official shot of Guitar Hero 5's redesigned drum kit thus confirming the pic and presumably, the specs we received last week. While no additional details are listed, this rig stands in stark, simplistic contrast to the overbearing GH kit launched by Logitech yesterday and will certainly cost less (much less) than $229. One more shot after the break while we wait for official pricing and specs in the run-up to the September launch.

Nice, but I still like Rock Band better.
Evan @ Jul 16th 2009 2:43AM
guitar hero sucks
dmitr77 @ Jul 16th 2009 2:54AM
I agree the layout in rockband is better, i get the feel of a set around me even without the cymbals
B3astofthe3ast @ Jul 16th 2009 2:37AM
The rock band 2 drums are good enough, and if you really wanna go big, get the IONS.
GBeatzRecrds @ Jul 16th 2009 2:48AM
Could I use these as a MIDI kit on my PC? That'd be total pwnage.
ThePengwin @ Jul 29th 2009 1:07AM
Most likely. if i remember my GH:WT ones they have a MIDI port on the back of them.
Furthermore, any of the WT instruments i have can plug straight into USB and be used as a game controller or microphone, whiich is awesome :)
more than i can say about the games songlist though... *thinks willy nelson*.... >_>
B3astofthe3ast @ Jul 16th 2009 3:14AM
any of the drums can be used as a midi kit.
MonkeyHood @ Jul 17th 2009 1:59PM
Even the RB2 ones? How does that work? Do I need the 360 windows wireless dongle?
Audio Pro @ Jul 17th 2009 5:24AM
Guitar hero or drum hero..?
Millah @ Jul 16th 2009 3:19AM
guitar hero?
Goatee Man @ Jul 16th 2009 4:47AM
Gee, those look kinda familiar.
Martin @ Jul 16th 2009 10:47AM
Congratulations on having seen a drum set before. How many different ways can they make it?
Aussie-Xbox-Freak @ Jul 16th 2009 5:58AM
GH instruments are way better than RB, and with the 2nd set they can only get more reliable and better to use.
Imo, gh is more fun than rb, sure rb has an intense catalogue of music, but overall i have a lot more fun on gh. playing expert on hyper speed 4 makes rb just a tad boring.
Smart People Play Tuba @ Jul 16th 2009 9:58AM
RB is more friendly for multiplayer use. Sometime I play RB2, and sometime my wife and I both play. Sometimes she drums, sometimes she sings, and it's easy to swap back and forth on the fly.
In GH:Metallica, we have to go back and start from the very beginning of the tour in order to change instruments. It's like you've got a separate tour going for each solo-player and two-player instrument combination. RB2 is much more flexible that way.
I don't know if GH:WT is that way. It's much easier to get folks together in online play on RB2 than GH:M as well, in my experience.
Both games are fun, depending on which songs you're playing. The songs are what make it fun, and RB wins there with its more extensive DLC catalog.

@Smart People Play Tuba
You realize the first RB was exactly the same way, right? Which means Harmonix couldn't get it right the first time, either. Bottom line, if you enjoy playing drums on expert level settings, GH is better. I can't comment on the RB2 drums, but the toms on the RB drums were terrible for fast rolls or triplets or anything like that. The GH drums are much better suited for it, and I enjoy them much more as a result.
Smart People Play Tuba @ Jul 16th 2009 11:23AM
No, I don't own RB1, but I think I remember reading that. I'm just saying I hope GH5 offers more flexibility in that area. Regardless of where you fall on the RB vs. GH discussion, as long as both games are around to compete with each other (and continue instrument compatibility), consumers win.

Love the pun guys, nice.

Cool, my name is on Engadget!! (I did submit the story too)

I still don't know why people buy these. The best part of playing drums if hitting it really hard and release your stress.
Mintvis @ Jul 16th 2009 8:43AM
I hit my GH drums very hard...
Martin @ Jul 16th 2009 10:49AM
I hit mine pretty hard too. They like it rough.

The main issue I have with both the guitar hero and rock band drums for the wii is the cost. I can understand all the complex internals on the other systems versions since they are wireless. In the wii case it is just mapping them to the wiimote which should be very cheap.
Jayvan @ Jul 16th 2009 10:13AM
RB is better, stop trying GH and stick to guitars
Eric Meadows @ Jul 16th 2009 11:43AM
Here's the problem: the Ion Drum Rocker kills the crap out of the normal GH: WT Drums, because they don't break. It looks like the same structure is in place for that of the Logitech drums, but the recessed rims make it more unrealistic than Ion's kit. Drums do not have heads above the rims except closely when looking at congas which aren't drums. Activision needs to get Neversoft onto the ball by having pad-mapping so that the Ion Drum Rocker can be used on GH: WT and GH5 fully, because it is the superior drum kit--it doesn't break!! [This comes from a drummer who has broken the original RockBand Drum Kit 5 time--3 pedals, 2 broken drum pads; along with breaking the GH: WT Drums 1 time--broken drum pad]
Smart People Play Tuba @ Jul 16th 2009 11:56AM
Um, congas are drums. They're open-chambered and (typically) played with the hands (which is why the heads are above the rims), but they're still drums.
Eric Meadows @ Jul 16th 2009 1:38PM
They are above the rims, but if you used a stick and hit the raised up section across which the head is stretched, no sound would arise. Don't talk about cupping your hands, etc, because then you aren't hitting the edge where-in the Logitech set will make an accompanying 'hit' register with the console. That is why these are stupid, the fact that these same drums could not be realistically replicated because of how drums are constructed. Therefore, there whole deal about raised heads is just ridiculous and stupid because it undermines what real drums are like!! Read it again before you comment...
Smart People Play Tuba @ Jul 16th 2009 5:01PM
Dude, who are you talking to?
guy943 @ Jul 16th 2009 3:42PM
I will buy any video game drumkit that doesn't slide forward when you play it.
xjpxfred @ Jul 23rd 2009 1:05AM
According to a band hero trailer on youtube, those drums are meant for band hero. I've looked at every video game saller website and they don't have a guitar hero 5 band kit or guitar hero new drums. When I went to youtube and searched for a band hero trailer, it clearly shows that those drums are for band hero.
