Samsung's S9110 touchscreen watchphone syncs with Outlook, on sale this month (updated)
€450; that's what'll cost to take home the world's thinnest (11.98mm) touchscreen cellphone fashioned into an tempting wristwatch. Although details are few and we're relying upon machine translated text of the press release, we can tell you that Samsung's watchphone -- first seen as a prototype at CES -- brings a 1.76-inch glass, scratch-proof touchscreen and stainless steel body that plays host to features such as Bluetooth 2.1, Outlook email sync, MP3 player, speakerphone, and voice recognition when it goes on sale this month in France. Hear that LG, Samsung just beat you to market by a calendar month.
Update: English press release is out with the following new specs: 176 x 220 pixel, 262k color TFT TSP display, 40MB of internal memory, 630mAh battery, and 57.5 x 41.1 x 11.98mm / 91g footprint. Gallery updated with better quality images.

Looks pimp!
Dick Tracy eat your heart out.
does..does she come with the watch too? ;)
that lines old dude...
go with somethin like: i can get her + an Iphone 3GS on cantract for €450 :)
now that im thinkin i actually can...
Main and only question - is the damnd Phone / watch (and gurl if you like) COMPATIBLE WITH A MACINTOSH ?!?!??!!?!?!?!?
Um... Isn't the Toshiba TG01 something like 9.8mm thick? Pretty sure that's thinner than 11.98mm. ;)
I believe the bit about it being fashioned into a watch is the key here.
I would maybe buy this...Just Maybe
i just fell in love...
Really?...I thought the watch was ugly.
I have waiting to see something like this for a long time. I interested to see how this plays out. I know I am not going to take plunge at it when (or if) comes state side till I see some user reviews
I waiting for your English to come stateside. Jane too
Nigga you's racist.
Now, I can see this working out just right, if you already have an iPod Touch...skip the smart phone, and use this to keep the baggage light.
~I HOPE IS WATER PROOF ~
So to actually use it you will either have to use the speakerphone or use a bluetooth earpiece. Either way, it's gonna be dweeb city.
You could hold your wrist up to your mouth like they do in American cop shows.
If this thing does video calls they NEED to launch an advertising campaign featuring Peter Davidson and Sandra Dickinson.
But the very notion of the cell phone displaying time essentially makes the watch obsolete no?
Don't get me wrong... I wore my Timex all the way from grade 1 till about grade 8 when I got into high school. And nothing will ever beat the awsomeness that is a diamond rolex or custom swiss watch.
But the "idea" of a watch is almost obsolete. It is meant to tell time which your cell phone now does.
I think the real "selling point" of this is the fact it wraps around your hand. Just imagine... instead of keeping cell phones in your pocket or on a holster, you just wrap it around your wrist.
No, the idea of watches isn't obsolete and a plain mobile phone isn't going to force it any nearer to obsolescence than it already hasn't. I find it weird that the only people that seem to feel that watches aren't needed any more are gadget obsessives.
People still buy them because they present a more convenient option than fumbling in your pocket for a mobile, they're easier to read in direct sunlight, they're decorative items. Put it this way, it's way easier to be subtle about checking the time on a watch when you're on a crappy date than it is to do so with a mobile phone.
No, the real advantage is that you can keep the cancer in your wrist. There's more spare room there.
Oh please...
This has nothing to do with gadget obsessiveness but to do with practicality. Why wear a watch when it's only function is to tell the time (possibly date) when you can look at your phone and get accurate time and date?
As for your comment about being hard to read or what not. iphone and blackberries are the hottest selling phones nowadays. It takes me one second to see the date on home screen, and maybe 3 seconds to switch to the "Clock" which displays the time in giant LCD numbers.
Face it, times have changed. It's way easier to check your phone for time and pretend you were just looking to see if you got any texts than it is to look at your watch on your wrist.
The watch is nearly becoming obsolete. It will be a niche accessory for most, but it's true benefit is overshadowed now. Like you said. It's more a decorative accessory now.
@HC
I also think you are a little mistaken. The watch will never be obsolete. I do agree that with the cell phone its no longer "necessary" but I'm a gadget lover and I love watches too. Maybe I do love watches as much for their decoration as I do for telling time but really as long as I have a watch on its much much quicker to get the time from my wrist that from my phone.
I think this idea is great. I instantly loved this samsung watch phone. Assuming it turns out nicely, I would definitely leave the iPhone at home some nights if I don't feel like I'll need access to certain things and just stick with this watch.
For many users, having a cell phone for timekeeping might well be enough, but I can check my watch in a half a second if I need to. I know it's a minimum 5 seconds to get out my phone. And add another 1 to turn it on and wait for the display to power up.
Less discreet in a meeting, for instance. And downright dangerous if I'm riding my bike.
Just give me a watch that hooks up to my existing phone, and I'll be happy :-)
Well wearing a watch still says positive things about the wearer, plus it also is much easier to check (surreptitiously or otherwise) than most cell phones, including the iPhone. Especially the iPhone in fact, but that is a little easier than most. Most often I am not in any real position to check my phone, and in some cases I can't afford to kill my night vision with a bright light source (which is why tritium = awesome).
I understand if you would rather check the phone, but most find the watch easier.
Oh and as far as wrist caner, well you phone is usually in you pocket right? Well guess what piece of anatomy that is next to. Not to mention when that sucker is on being used it is next to your brain (give or take 150 mm or so).
Watches are bought as fashion accessories and status symbols, most people in urban areas already have cell phones and thus don't "need" a watch just to tell time.
My watch is a first-generation Tissot T-Touch. It tells time in both digital and analog formats. It functions as a barometer, altimeter, thermometer and compass (magnetic and geographic). It also has a stop-watch and shows the date. The front dial is sapphire, virtually scratchproof. Getting wet or going underwater is no probs'. And all this comes in a super-user-friendly instant-on touch user-interface. No, I don't believe watches are obsolete.
Fer cryin out loud, I DON'T WANT A WATCHPHONE!
I want a BT watch that gives me caller ID and maybe picks up reminders FROM my phone! Is this so hard, people?!
Sony ericsson did something like this
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/14/sony-ericssons-new-mbw-150-bluetooth-watch-rocks-avrcp/
I'm sorry!!! BAWWWWw
smartWatchM ;)
It has Blueetooth 2.1 doesn't it?
Anyway, for now.. there's just one thing I've noticed that's really missing here unfortunately (apart from what's mentioned already by others), it seems that a front-facing camera isn't included in the specs (there goes the Dick Tracy reference again now)!
A camera is a very basic feature of a cellphone nowadays, never mind the megapixels since a VGA camera (at least) is usually the spec for a front-facing camera. But if these new type/breed of gadgets are to really be noticed (initially) & accepted (later), there should be a further reason of usefulness in order for it to succeed.. to become a necessary purchase for it's intended target market (apart from the geek/tech early adopter crowd of course).
Just my few cents about it.
world's thinnest (11.98mm) touchthing ha!
I'll wait for the kinetic version!
Good luck getting a date wearing that.
GMTA, gtma.
(typo..)
If you are hot people will think the watch is hot too. I think that girl in that watch is hot.
i guess i will throw my rolex out and wear this instead wow
meh.
double meh, even.
brb, my shoe is ringing.
It's just way too big and ugly........ but it is a testament to the advancement of technology.......from the Motorola brick phone that did nothing but make calls to today's smartphones and now a wristwatch smartphone.
With a hot chick like that you don't need a phone. You need a condom.
Folks, this would be great. You just have to know where to wear it. With jeans and a T to the movies - YES. With a suit to some grand event - NO, thats what the rolex (or maybe citizen if u are poor like me lol) if for.
Part of my objection to this concept. You're right, there's no way on earth you'd wear this with a tux. So, what, you go without your phone? Sure.
Give me a range of BT watches that allow me to control my phone, and that I can change for different looks/occasions. Rolex might even make one ;-)
I just wear my iphone 3GS on my wrist.
That screams cool.
This is pretty awesome! Would be cool if they made one that is only a bluetooth extender for your mobile, allowing you to make calls etc.
Recession antidote one of these please!
The phone is shown on a 95lbs South Korean woman.
I think the phone/watch would look more proportional on a husky mans arm.
This should be pretty nice. I own a watch phone already that has Bluetooth A2DP, MP4 playback, QVGA cam, and touchscreen. Problem with the devices this small are the batteries. I like that the Samsung at least has Outlook sync but this watch phone is even more anemic than my existing watch phone which means that at the 450 euro pricetag, it's definitely overpriced considering mine only cost USD$150. The screen is much larger on the Samsung compared to the LG but it doesn't justify the price tag. Also what's up with no 3G and Bluetooth tethering?
Say hello to wrist cancer :)
need to get to my profile... just passin through
Yea, you're new here, You could at the very least have commented on the girl.....
Too bad about the screen being installed upside down on the demo unit, though.
