HP reportedly beginning production of new 10.1-inch, 11.6-inch netbooks / ultralights
This is about as early and unofficial as it gets, but DigiTimes is reporting that HP has contracted Quanta to begin production of an apparently all new 11.6-inch netbook in August, and another new 10.1-inch before the end of the year, which SlashGear rightly speculates could well be CULV ultralights rather than standard "netbooks." That's further bolstered by the fact that HP has separately contracted Inventec to build a revision to its current 10.1-inch netbook at the end of September. It's not all netbooks and ultralights for HP, however, as Quanta has also landed a deal to produce some new 15.6- and 17.3-inch laptops, while Compal will be handling HP's new 13.3- and 14-inch enterprise notebooks.

Still waiting for that Tegra 650....
Hear, hear!
Regarding netbooks, its tegra or bust for me.
OMG, I feel dizzy with all these netbook releases.
(please have proper graphics and flush 10 hour battery - *crosses fingers*)
Yes, and no more those crappy Atoms either!
Shall we also keep the price under $300 while we're at it?
Doubt proper graphics (VGA out needs to die). How about a decent spec'd model with switchable graphics and HDMI out hmm? Backlit keyboard while we're at it.
@dr4gon: under $400 is more reasonable. (lets not get greedy)l
Hate to point it out but just noticed the image isn't centred
now it is
omg, no you didn't.
performance depending, that 11.6er could very well be in my future
So, I guess netbooks smaller than 10" are dead now? Everybody is doing larger and upselling netbooks now.
i think most people get really sick of staring at sub 10in screens for too long. I know I do. I think 10-11 in. is the sweet spot for functionality.
@lawyer bird: ditto. My 10.1" Eee PC is absolutely perfect for me.
It kind of seems that way, which is a shame as I like 9" best; 10" is OK, though, so I'm glad they seem to be staying around, anyway.
@Benson: I'm with you. I started with a 10" eeePC, and found it still too big to be truly used on-the-go, and settled on the mini9 instead.
I think 11-13 is the way to go, 10 is just too small, and I would never carry around something bigger than 13.
Might as well put in a 10" screen if they'd otherwise just have huge bezels.
I like the HP mini 110 form factor. Just keep that size and remove some bezel, that would give you at least 11.1 inches diagonally on a 10.5 inch wide device. sold.
Soon people will want 15" $700 netbooks! [/crazy face]
yay for CULV, will make a great replacement to my current Mini 1000
Really hoping for a 11.6" with CULV and some decent battery life. I almost jumped on the HD display version of the Mini 2140, but it was just too many pixels for that small screen. 1366x768 on a 11.6" screen is perfectly usable so if they can actually keep the design minimal (I don't need a row of 8 blinking LEDs to tell my everything that goes on in the machine) and turn down the glossy (is it cheaper to make glossy plastic somehow?) I'll be all over it. A slightly bigger Mini 5101 would do the trick.
doesn it mean that we'll be seeing a 10 inch CULV notebook by then?
i thought intel said they dont allow CULV to be used on machines under the size of 10"
How exciting. : |
DAMNIT!!! I was just about ready to go for the Mini 5101 (for the look even though it doesn't have the broadcom HD thing) or the Mini 110 (cause it has the accelerator). Now I have to wait :/
I don't really care about the Ion or the Atom 330. They suck up wayyyy to much juice. I already have a gaming laptop that can play Crysis on max settings across the board. I just need one I can carry with me to class to take notes on.
if it has a mini pci-e slot or even solder points, you could get the HD module off ebay and add it yourself.
Every time I'm about ready to order a netbook, they announce a better one. It never ends I tells ya!
Netbooks are great stocking stuffers for people you don't like.
It's interesting that Netbook manufacturers would release 11.6" models now, with Windows 7... and its 10" restriction... just around the corner. Does this mean XP will keep going, much to Microsoft's frustration?
I love my mini 2140 I use it daily to surf and do email.
Blow me Greenpeace.
how on earth would they release new crops when they haven't released yet the HP Mini 5101 in the retail shelf.
