Acer Timeline 8000 series arrives at Office Depot
Well, that didn't take long. Less than a day after Acer announced the new Timeline 8000 series, the 14-inch AS4810T-8480 has popped up on an Office Depot shelf for $699. It's not bad for the money -- you're getting a 1.4GHz Core Solo SU3500, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB disk, and eight hours of battery life -- but we'd wait to buy until next week, when our tipster says it'll be on sale for $549. Anyone planning to pick one up?

id say the ram is enough and disk capacity its ok. but the processor? why 1.4 ghz? i bet its running windows vista basic or home premium, it would take precious minutes to load.
A damn Core 2 Solo for $700! Laptop Hunters strike again! They walk out the store smiling with a fistful of cash and an underpowered computer. WTF? Didn't Intel stop making that crappy chip a couple of years back? Windows PC owners, bon appetit. At least this thing is faster than any netbook.
Uhh because it's an ultra low voltage processor? It uses like 1/3rd the power of the regular laptop Core2Duo chips, hence the 8 hour battery life for a reasonable price.
Yes but if half of those 8 hours are wasted waiting for crap to load what is the really advantage?
Use a Core 2 Solo then come back and bitch. they are perfectly good for most tasks.
CPU speed doesn't have much to do with load times. Also, for not much more there is a Core 2 Duo ULV version. I'm running a Core Solo CULV now and it's perfectly adequate for everything I throw at it (except those Youtube HD videos).
Actually, if I'm correct in saying, it's actually a Pentium processor.
They're also available at Radioshack
Engadget you need to change your title, this is the 4000 series (older model) its been selling all over the place since June. The newly announced 8000 series has yet to come to market. As others have noted the new one has finger print reader in between the track pad.
The 4810 has a Pentium processor works great only 499.
Core Solo? De-evolution of CPU's is a joke, especially at this price which is C2D territory.
It's a Core 2 Solo, not older Core Solo.
no, it has only ONE core.
Thus the "Solo" Solo = 1 core. Duo = 2 cores.
Based on that logic.
Core 2 Solo = single core Core 2 processor
Core 2 Duo = 2 core Core 2 processor
Core 2 Quad = 4 core Core 2 processor
Actually, Jayayess1190 is right. It's a Core 2 Solo. The "Core 2" part of the name is Intel's name for the underlying technology. The Duo, Solo, or Quad part of the name is how Intel designates the number of cores. The Core Solo was the single core version of the Core Duo; the Core 2 Solo is the single core version of the Core 2 Duo.
Either way it still sucks ass and Intel should drop it all together since it's just a Pentium M/a slightly more powerful Atom.
Actually the 1.4Ghz Core 2 Solo is at least twice as fast as the fastest Atom, but then that doesn't really matter when it comes to your ill informed rant does it ?
Core Solo = Single Core, 32 bit
Core Duo = Dual Core, 32 bit
Core 2 Solo = Single Core, 64 bit
Core 2 Duo = Dual Core, 64 bit
Core 2 Quad = Quad Core, 64 bit
Not bad at all for the price, I picked up a Lenovo T400 for $696 with half the RAM and half the HDD space a month ago. Then again I did get a faster CPU and probably a better built, longer lasting machine.
you dont buy this thing for 2 processors ... you buy it for the 8 hours of battery.
Oh so true, but JUST for the battery.
A laptop with two processors?
Yes rcarm welcome to the 21st century, they are called dual cores.
he meant 2 cores. ;)
The sams club i work at has had these out since wednesday.
This is not one of the new 8000 series Timelines. this has no fingerprint reader and the design is a normal Timeline.
I can't remember what is different about the 8000 series but I have an "original" Timeline with a Core 2 Duo processor 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HD and the only difference I see here is the power input is on the right instead of the left. That is, unless Engadget left out that this model has ATI graphics.
Got this from Staples 3 months ago for $599. Windows 7 rocks on this machine. I have 25Mbps HD camcorder files (MTS) and it plays it without breaking a sweat... 15% CPU with builtin Win7 codec for H264... can Macs do that.... I get around ~7hrs with wifi on..
If it is 25Mbps then it is probably not very compressed. If it is not very compressed it is easy to play.
I got one at Staples in June for 699, and at 550 it is a great buy. You must update the firmware on the vga driver, and the bios at the acer website or else it will run like a crap. I was planning on getting the HP dv2, but once I saw this there was no comparison. The 1.4ghz handles vista great, and the battery life is awesome.
If it was an "8000 series" it would be an Aspire 8XXXT, not an Aspire 4810T ... come on, numbers aren't that hard.
You noobs have got to learn to STFU and read!

Thanks for the link Joel. It's nice seeing the different configurations and comparing options. After what sounded like a big announcement earlier this week, looks like the 8000 series mainly differs in processor used. Pentium vs. Core 2 Solo.
Too bad it's only 1.4 C2S and not C2D although that would mean a crappier battery life
i have a timeline 4000 series, and the battery life is brilliant, the only thing i find unusual is the keyboard, the keys are flat,
normally the keys have a little bit of curve to them so you can center your fingers, other then that i have no complaints
speed is more then ample for the basics
Where can you buy a timeline 4810 in the U.S. with a core 2 duo processor? I can only find the 14-inch with the core 2 solo in the U.S.
At $549 maybe.
Already rolled back to $548 at Walmart.

no, joel.
That's the older model.
first of all, that's a 15 in. and this is 14. Also it has the older penium proc instead of the C2S

I've had the 15.6" 5810T-8929 in my display case at RadioShack for over a week at $669.99
Just to add, if I didn't already have a netbook i'd be grabbing the Aspire One AO751-1346 that came in yesterday, it's beautiful.
LOL I will stick with my Asus G51 gaming laptop with windows 7 running just fine on it. I only get 2 hours of battery life but everything else on mine puts these type of laptops to bed. Try playing Crysis or World in Conflict all high settings. The people that just check email and browse the net arent in the know so they buy this garbage.
Not everyone buys a computer to play games.
Laughing at people who don't buy more computer than they need is foolish and ignorant.
On the topic of laughing at people, I laugh at people who buy a laptop for gaming. That just seems ridiculous in my mind.
I have a 3810T with the Core 2 Solo 1.4. Its fantastic. I get almost 9 hours on a battery charge. It runs Win7 just peachy as well. I get a 3.5 rating on the CPU. I also don't need to play 1080p video on my 720p 16:9 LCD thats attached to it. In fact, I have this wonderful invention called the TELEVISION that I use to watch 1080p video on... amazing! For web browsing, office work, emailing, and other every day tasks, this thing is quite a bit faster than my MSI Wind U100... and gets about 4x the battery life with only .4lb more of weight.
OMG I CAN'T PLAY CRYSIS ON MY THIN AND LIGHT LAPTOP THAT I ONLY USE FOR WORK!
OMG your such a noob. I also have a 52 inch 2009 LED Samsung HDTV that I watch Blu Rays on. LOL back at ya bud. I was just stating these weak lappies shouldnt even be made. I have a 32Gb 3GS iphone that will do more than this laptop will for less money. So go play your weak web/email only laptop and i will keep being the envy of everyone who sees me with my bad ass g51. Laughing at you poor boy.
Yes Barry, because everyone needs an insane gaming laptop capable of playing Crysis at high settings while downloading all the porn you can get in the background, because lets face it, thats the closest you will ever get to a pair of tits. Not everyone plays games, so why should they spend 2+ grand on a laptop with much less features? When I sold a few of these the other day, one of the customers was going to grad school for law. They needed good battery life and portability, and the most demanding thing they were doing was using word. So why spend all of the extra money? This laptop gets the job done just fine, and will do it even better when Windows 7 is out.
Basically, you are an idiot.
@BarryL
Can you just stop little kid? You should just suck on your mommy's breast! Another thing there is no 52' inch LED Samsung TV just 46' inch and 55' inch dumb ass. Next time ask your daddy what size his VIZIO tv is before stating wrong information. So sad LMFAO!
