80GB PlayStation 3 on the outs in Japan, PS3 Slim looking all the more likely
We know the whole "where there's smoke, there's hotness" argument is played out, but it sure feels like the pieces are coming together here. With Sony's 20GB, 40GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 already a part of history, it's just the 80GB and 160GB models holding down the fort. After August 9th, however, it seems that just the latter will be representin' in Japan. The notice above essentially informs retailer 7-Eleven (don't hate) that no more orders for the black, white and silver 80GB PS3 will be accepted after Sunday due to a request from "the manufacturer." The note also instructs store owners to take down the in-story displays for the 80GB model, giving us all the reason we need to believe that a slimmed down version of the console is within reach. Of course, that's just whimsical speculation, but we just can't talk our hearts into listening to our heads on this one.

I wish our 7-Eleven's were that cool.
It's for those impulse buyer at the counter right next to those 25 cent candies.
The 7-11 over there are very similar in respect to the size and type of products of the American variety from what I remember. There are no slurpies as aznjohnny mentions, but I also don't remember seeing video game sections from when I was there. It was probably a very small section that I overlooked. The best thing about 7-11's in Japan though is that there are a lot of them around and they all have atm's in english that work with American banks. And Yeah, Chu-Hi's. Daddy misses you :-(
Mmm, chu-hi... just finished drinking one, but I got it from Family Mart since it was a block closer.
hell yea, so freaking awesome
hopefully it has an emotion engine in it, to play retro PS games
ALSO FIRST
nope, just 2nd to fail
Have you ever noticed that those people who try to announce that they were the first to comment on an article are almost inevitably not the first? The universe seems to move in mysterious, almost poetic, ways...
I know a few friends that can't wait for the phat ps3 firesale thats abot to happen.
a few friends? i know of about 6 billion people.
That's right-- PlayStation 3 at 7-Eleven.
Get with the program, America!
please say the ps3 slim has backwards compatibility with ps2 games.
Don't consoles, and particularly the PS3, need more internal RAM much more than bigger HD's? That would be more exciting and significant.
Seconded. Doesn't change the fact that I would still drop my pants in public for a slim PS3.
Bigger hard drives are good (I've got a 500GB one in mine) but you're right, 80GB is probably enough for most people.
More ram would also be good, it wouldn't help games as Sony just wouldn't stuff it for the 23.8 million people who already have a PS3 and allow the devs to use the extra RAM for games, however it would be tasty for in game XMB, web browsing and other non-gaming functions.
Doubt they'll do it though :(
not with the SLEW of Games that install 4GBs of Data......hell 15 of those games and your 80GB HDD is DONE....then there are PSN titles and maybe you want to download movies....
The majority of the games with large installs are crap anyways, why would you want them?
It's just that I'm always shocked if I hear how little RAM consoles still have, and it would be useful to drop loading lag and developers could simply up the resolution of textures and increase complexity of objects and even the physics in the game on the run after detecting a PS3s (let's call it that), that would not be hard at all, just adding RAM doesn't break anything significantly in the code.
And RAM is dirt cheap, comparatively, even the graphics kind, although there's issues with how RAM is bound in a Cell CPU setup, and how it's shared with the GPU I guess in consoles.
Still, I bet it's a real bottleneck.
The reason that the consoles increase HD sizes is mainly for managing the supply of spares when people send their units in for repair. I'm not sure if anyone is making new 2.5" drives with 80GB per platter any more; they stopped that density for 3.5" long ago. Trying to get a hold of stock of a discontinued size can actually be more expensive than just getting driver of the new minimum size.
I think this announcement says more about 7-Eleven's state of fail in America compared to in Japan- and it was even started in America! They've got to better than Best Buy, right?
@ Wwhat you are right the PS3 does need more RAM the dang in game XMB is slower than a damn turtle. But im very curious to see the Slim PS3.
Amazon had the 80GB PS3 listed at US$369.99 instead of its usual US$399.99 for a couple of hours the other day. It was really odd and I was curious as to why.
Amazon's prices for lots of things change throughout the day, presumably due to demand. If people aren't ordering at $399, the price drops to 369. Once people buy up some of the stock, the price goes back up. I've seen it happen with TVs a lot.
via wikipedia about 7-eleven in japan:
Japan has more 7-Eleven locations than anywhere else in the world, where they often bear the title of its holding company "Seven & I Holdings". Of the 34,200 stores around the globe, 12,013 of them are located in Japan. 1,577 are in Tokyo.
The feel and look of the store is somewhat different from that of the U.S. 7-Elevens. In Japan they offer a wider selection of products and services. Japanese 7-Elevens offer not only food, drinks, and magazines, but also video games and consoles, music CDs, DVDs, digital cardreaders as well as seasonal items like Christmas cakes, Valentine's Day chocolates, and fireworks. Slurpees and Big Gulp super size soft drinks are no longer sold in Japan; these products were not popular when 7-Eleven originally opened in Japan.
That's awesome, I only wished our 7 elevens were as sophisticated.
A 7-11 without slurpees is a 7-11 I don't want to go to :(
Be happy you even have 7-11s to go to. No Slurpees here in Greenville, SC. :(
Actually, except for a special Final Fantasy package sold in very limited quantities, 160GB SKUs aren't and have never been part of Sony's PS3 lineup here in Japan.
80GB is all we have, and all we have had since the end of 40GB SKUs.
So the end of 80GB is pretty big news, actually.
It definitely means something new is coming. Which could be anything from an updated phat tengazillionGB SKU to - herm - the rumored 120GB slim.
