Who says the world stopped reading decades ago? With CES 2010 looming ever closer, it looks as if 2010 may end up being the year of the e-book reader. Amazon's got a few Kindles out, Sony's
now vying to compete on price, Hearst is doing
whatever it's doing, Plastic Logic is jumping in early next year and even
iRex is purportedly hoping to issue a consumer-centric alternative. Speaking of those last two, we're hearing that Plastic Logic's long-awaited entrant into the e-book reading world will "be launched in the US at the beginning of next year at a similar price to the Kindle, which starts at $299," while a UK launch is expected in late 2010 or early 2011. As for iRex, the mockup you see above portrays a wireless device with an expansive 8.1-inch display, inbuitl 3G, a full touchscreen and a fall 2009 release date. 'Course, we're also hearing that this one will hover well above the $300 mark, so it's certainly not aimed at the budget-minded bookworms. So many syllables, so little time...
[Thanks, Tom]

Fix the "inbuitl".
Also, how many times did Plastic logic postpone the release?
looks like the e-book reader flood gates have opened. Everyone and their cousin have started making one.
"Sony's now vying to compete on price"
NEVER in all my life did I think that I'd hear/read that anywhere.
Well, their brand is in the crapper right now and Sony/BMG keeps hobbling anything decent that comes out of engineering (read: DRM). So after squandering all of their advantages they actually have to play on a level field. Funny, I have no pity.
Touchy 8.1", and it packs the wireless? Compete with that Sony, size matters... I just made a note to buy one of these things in January.
That's the IRex model, whose current non-touchscreen, non-wireless readers currently go for $999 (cheapest model). I have serious doubts that they'll price this one at less than $500, in which case I'd rather get a Kindle. I'll wait until non-wireless, 8.5x11inch readers drop to $200.
The cheapest iRex, which does feature a touchscreen, comes at €549 including taxes, that's not $999, not even in Australia. It also comes with an inherent advantage over the Kindle: iRex bothers to sell it where I live.
As Mr. MOjo already pointed out already: WTF are you talking about?
Well, if it comes from iRex, add another 12 months from the point in time when they start selling it to the point in time when it actually works... (yes, they do provide firmware updates).
I guess I could really post this in a number of the new topics about this. But what's up with all of the new e-readers out there lately? Is the market really that great, because there seems to be a mass amount of new e-readers lately.
What are you talking about? The DR1000S has a wacom-tablet built in, supports note-taking, Also supports note-taking on pdf-documents and goes for US$859.00.
I use one for my work at college for my books and taking notes (which thanks to software developed by users, i can export to pdf)
Show me ANYTHING comparable to that. The price is a bummer, but the money and time i saved make up for that.
meant for "ichheissesuperfantastisch", who talks shit indeed (hence the nickname)
i read sheisse :P
2010 can't be year of the eBook reader! It's supposed to be the year of the PS3!
YES. This technology will revolutionize everything. Paper documents will cease to exist, making messy files and environmental impacts shrink.
GO E-READERS! (now gimmie a $100 one, maybe $250 if it comes with a touchscreen and the ability to write on it).
I admit these lower prices and larger screens are starting me to consider it.
If the touch part works decently, there is support for a wide variety of file types, and there are easy options for getting my own files on there (without cross shipping them through some proprietary servers or service) then I may well be in.
Oh come on! At least cite the source for the $299 rumor! The Times wrote that http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/technology/article6736859.ece and they are just guessing based on a comment from PL that they will be competitive with the other pricing in the market. But think about it for just a moment. The Kindle has only been just reduced to 299. Do you really think this lager better device will be the same price as that out of the gate? More likely is that it will be more than the Kindle 2 but less than the DX
I suspect if the $299 price is true, it will come burdened with a 2-year subscription plan of some kind. I would, of course, be very happy to be proven wrong.
So, their help icon is the same as the one Apple uses in OS X, rotated slightly?
no its the one used by Tom-Tom, tilted slightly.
