Well, would you look at that. Microsoft's
Zune HD's overexposed -- both in quantity of pics and in quality of photography -- camera shoot with the FCC has been made public, showing off quite a bit of the device, its internals,
and its dock. We've got two model numbers listed here, 1395 and 1402 representing the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively, and in case you're wondering, that's Windows CE you're seeing above, the OS on which Zune HD's UI is built. Hit up the read link to browse yourself, or check out the gallery below for the highlights, including a NVIDIA Tegra chip sighting and an amusing
"For our princess" tattoo on the inside of the back cover. Now if we could only get a MSRP or
narrower release window...
What's the Street Date for the Zune HD again? I've heard mention about September 5th or something. Anyone have an idea if that's still the case?
I'm really disappointed in the capacity. I've been considering moving over to an iPod, mainly because of the wifi capability, but I really like my Zune 80's capacity. I was excited that ZuneHD was adding wifi, and psyched about the OLED screen, however the iPod's screen size is larger, with a 3.5 screen @ 4:3 (vs 3.3 @ 16:9); that makes it a little easier for browsing. Also, as some are saying, movies will eat up a lot if they're at 720p.
Here's hoping for a $149 price point for the 8GB, and a $199 price point for 16GB.
Well, there is no 8GB version. So you don't have to worry about that price.
According to Buy.com- 35 days and counting
This is just a guess but could the 10/19/09 on the 2rd be the release date?? unless they already announced a date i haven't really been keeping up lately
Check your upside-down vision. That says 2009/01/19. So that's January 19th, 2009.
I meant 3rd pic
I agree i need my vision checked though that was 10 it was 1 sry
By the way, that was meant to be a playful comment. Re-reading it I realized it could be taken as being somewhat douchy.
I'm normally an iPod man, but I'll definitely be picking one of these up!
Any idea on if the Zune HD is compatible with the existing Zune docks? I don't want to pay for another dock...
The existing docks and charge/synch cords all work with the new Zune, though obviously the old dock has no HDMI/Optical connections on it.
I really like how this Zune is shaping up; If we have paid music from iTunes or CD's, would we be able to move our music on it? Or even the movies I have already on my HDD? I'm out of the Zune loop really, and I only known one very unreliable person with a Zune. Can someone inform me about playing with content on the Zune?
Huh?
Oh, and Windows Mobile has had copy + paste FOREVER. The iPhone is many years behind in that respect.
Directed @ "The i", thanks Engadget...
Hi. I'm the new Zune HD.
In a long line of bad design decisions in the portable audio market started by other companies, I come with non-removable battery with no battery cover accessible to you, Joe User. See that lovely battery in the gallery? That's all you'll see of me. We'll pretend rechargeable batteries last forever and never need to be swapped out, OK?
I also come in fixed capacities of 16GB and 32GB, each with their own model number.
We'll keep it a secret that Flash chips can and may fail the more you write to them, ok? Ssshh, we only have to outlast the warranty and we're confident we can do that. Plus everyone else is doing it.
Removable microSD or SD would just add expense and not allow us to increase our profit as time goes on as those Flash storage chips get cheaper in the months ahead. We won't give you the option of allowing you to buy your own storage, taking advantage of price drops and/or fixing failed storage with a quick swap. It is not our intention to have you using this in 5 or (heaven forbid) even 10 years from now. You'll have upgraded quite a few times by then, even if you didn't want to.
Our parent company has gazillions of dollars and despite this we can't like to take this opportunity to ask you to please enjoy more of the same wasteful anti-customer design. We'd like to list cost for replacement battery service, but we'd instead like to downplay the fact that batteries are limited-life devices in the bottom section of this page, and direct you to point 8 when all else fails:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938069?sd=zune
We don't have battery replacement costs listed like our main competitor does:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
But we shouldn't be singled-out because neither does Sony or other manufacturers. Despite the 'age of green', we don't even pay lip-service to these issues, or as we'd like to put it: non-issues.
Nothing lasts forever (despite pretty much being able to), but things must outlast the warranty. That's our policy. So enjoy our non-removable fixed storage device. We are sure it will outlast the warranty with little to no issues as we continue to downplay and/or ignore limited flash write life and limited battery cycle life.
Warm Regards,
Microsoft Zune Team

I call fake. The REAL Zune HD would sign its letter with zune.net! You are an imposter!
It amazes me that some people can't simply post what they don't like about a device, instead choosing to be a total douche in trying waaaay to hard to denounce it.
Hi. I'm the new iPod Touch.
In a long line of bad design decisions in the portable audio market started by other companies, I come with non-removable battery with no battery cover accessible to you, Joe User. Our parent company has gazillions of dollars and despite this we can't like to take this opportunity to ask you to please enjoy more of the same wasteful anti-customer design. We finally list the cost for replacement battery service, after people went to the press when they first found out we weer going to charge them to replace a dead battery, but we'd instead like to downplay the fact that batteries are limited-life devices with this trouble shooting guide. Because we like pagefication, and know that our target audience likes pictures.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/troubleshooting/ipodtouch/
We list our battery replacement costs, but only because manyof our disloyal customers had hissy fits when we told them there was a cost to replace them.
We would like credit for the half-assed solution to a problem we ourselves caused.

Anyobdy else notice the "For Our Princess" inside the case? WTH?
You mean apart from the writer of the article and the commenters on the first page?
are you serious microsoft. am i really going to have to choose between 16 & 32 when i have 40+gb of music. way to fall behind again because i am willing to bet apple will release a 64gb itouch before you release a 64gb version.
when will someone make a 64gb or even higher capacity player? i want to transport all of my music.
Wow 16Gb and 32 GB are too small. Instead of matching the ipod touch they should try to outdo it. That is too small to fit all my music and 720p HD videos.
That photo adds 10 lbs to the Zune. Now it looks like the old Zune, but with a bigger screen and less button. What's up with that?
poor thing is all taped up against the box and stripped naked... tear... haha
MRLN: if you look at any of the videos that were released yesterday it is actually almost smaller in all dimensions than an ipod touch, which was surprising... i'm used to my brick of a zune 30 haha...
anybody notice they were watching transformers on slide 11 (text bottom left of screen)? Maybe its one of the HD videos that comes with the device? Zunes usually come with some content on the device.
man, I absolutely LOVE seeing the WinCE shot! Its like Microsoft porn of the highest quality! Think of how badass WinMo would be with a Tegra powering it.....ahhh the possiblities...
Has nobody caught on the the Zune HD will come with the Zune Premium earbuds?
http://t03.us/2009/08/zune-hd-to-include-premium-earbuds/
Windows scrollbars FTL hahaha
'Meh' at those 16 and 32gb capcities. Show me one at 64gbs and we'll talk.
Looking good!
