T-Mobile hits the sauce, demands $350 for HTC Touch Pro2
Jumpin' Jehoshaphat! With Apple lowering the smartphone price bar with its last-gen iPhone 3G at $99, any well-specced phone hitting the airwaves these days for over a buck ninety-nine on contract just seems outrageous. And then, there's this. T-Mobile USA has somehow found it within its heart to charge a near-astronomical $349.99 (on a two-year agreement, no less) for HTC's latest WinMo-packin' powerhouse, the Touch Pro2. Look, we aren't saying the phone isn't worth its weight in gold, but a quick look around the marketplace shows just how out of place this obscenely large asking price really is. The silver lining? We're betting this slips beneath the $200 mark just as soon as the HTC fanboys have chipped in their early adopter fees (and it hits every other carrier in America).

ridiculous...no other way to say it
Agree. They won't sell many. That's for sure!
I'm buying one right when it appears on the upgrade section!
Not so fast! The pricing was changed to $279. See here: http://fonefrenzy.wordpress.com/2009/08/11/htc-touch-pro-2-pricing-only-279-earlier-pricing-was-wrong/
ridiculous is right, and I would hardly call this thing a "powerhouse"...
@haX0r Then somebody should tell T-Mobile that they changed their price, it's showing $350 on their website right now.
What is ridiculous is the fact that in Canada TELUS charges $550 on a two year contract for this phone. Sure they have a 3.5" headphone jack, but they removed the front camera. ($650 no contract)

That is what I call ridiculous, people in the USA have it easy.

The sprint touch pro 2 better be $199 (after stupid rebate)
The tmo website pricing is not what people are being quoted over the phone. On the phone TMo is apparently quoting the 279.99 price. Check xda-devs and blog comments eveywhere where people are actually calling in to check on it.
Not as ridiculous as the iPhone going for $599 and $699 WITH a 2 year contract when it launched. This HTC Touch Pro 2 seems to be just as much awaited as the original iPhone.
Still ridiculous though.
its $199 at wirefly.com with 2yr contract.... dont know how reputable!reliable that site is... never used it myself. just saying....
It's also 199 with a *new* service plan at letstalk.com, I've used them before and had no complaints. 299 for upgrade with 2 yr contract.
OneLove ...
Why would you think the TP2 will be $199 at Sprint?
The current TouchPro is STILL at $299 AFTER $100 Rebate. The phone has been out almost a year now and the price hasn't budged.
No wonder Sprint is selling a ton of WinMo phones. With the Diamond at $299 and the TouchPro at $399 (before rebates) these devices are just way overpriced.
The Touch Pro used be almost that price on Verizon.
The touch pro is currently selling for $299 with a two year contract from sprint.
old model. move along.
WOOT for business tool of startling levels! Tax write-offs FTW!
Why pay 350 when you can get a HTC Magic (Mytouch3g) for 199 and a better OS.
welcome to canada, friends
i'm not ur friend, guy
not with that attitude, you're not!
hey Canada! can i get some healthcare?......plz
@ uncontrol : nintendo fanboy hater was not being rude, it's a famous southpark episode
@ nintendo ... : we're not your friends, buddy
I'm not your buddy, pal.
I'm not your pal, buddy
Why is the TP2 so expensive????
I know why!!
BLAME CANADA!
Real machines cost a lot not $99.
Nice device.
All this means is now I cant by the phone today but must wait a few months hoping they learn their lesson.
The MyTouch 3g I believe is only 199 on contract and it comes in Merlot. Aside from the physical keyboard, I'm not seeing any advantage to getting this phone at 350 on contract. Android has lots of potential and Google seems to be on the ball about updating the OS.
I NEVER bought a phone from a carrier anyway. I always purchased unlocked.
The $200 savings isn't worth it. The only reason I buy from AT&T now is because they subsidize the iPhone $400 off retail instead of the usual $200. If I wanted an HTC Touch Pro 2, I'd buy one from expansys.
very true and i wholeheartedly agree with you, but the problem with Tmobile is that their 3G band is different (1700/2100). So for customers like me Im forced to buy their phones if i want to take advantage of the 3G speeds :(
I don't understand this ridiculous mentality of not signing a contract. If the savings is less than $200 (or you know you're going to be leaving the carrier very shortly), there is little reason to sign a contract; however, for other devices, If you break it, you're coming out even or still on top, but if you end up keeping them, then you are saving even more money.
If you can find a US 3G and unbranded version of this phone, by all means buy it and also let me know please.
any phone with aol internet should be free
Holy crap your right!
After looking at it close I believe that's AOL Mail...on a different picture it shows the IE web browser
$350 on a 2 year ball and chain contract? No rosie UI & No headphone 3.5 jack? = FAIL
have you NOT been reading the reviews on this?
Give it a few days, a week tops, tmobile will feel the backlash from tech blogs and consumers, and drop the price. However, this was like $600 unlocked at best buy so $350 subsidized does make "sense"
It's not at all surprising as that is the same price that AT&T charged for the TouchPro/Fuze.
I am sorry, but no phone on t-mobile is worth that.
Sprint is STILL selling the original touch pro for $299. I think thats even more ridiculous, especially when you can get a pre for $100 cheaper
Its worth it smart guy considering you get all the features out the gate.
totally agree, most overpriced under performing phone ever
They would have to pay me $350.00 to use a winmo phone
or put a gun to your head
come on $350 get a clue tmobile! Should be at most $149 on a two year.
A little to low there buddy , 250$ sounds about right
It be fine at $250 if it had the 3.5mm jack that the others will get, and if it had a little more ram. This should be $200-$215.
Another handset from HTC that is overpriced and most likely falls short. Premium handsets garner premium price points, I just don't see it here. It looks cheap and most likely under-performs. What's even more confusing is ATT still has the FUZE priced around $300 if I'm not mistaken. Granted I haven't tried the touch pro2 yet, but based on past experiences with HTC, this will probably look better on paper and in screenshots than any kind of real world efficient functionality.
Not surprising. I don't understand the HTC lovefest. This phone will have a very tiny niche consumer audience....
Whatever floats your boat, but there are plenty of other options out there...especially this 4th quarter...
