Lanyu LY-EB01 is world's cheapest laptop with built-in obsolescence
Step aside, World's Cheapest Laptop, Lanyu of China just undercut you -- and the magical $100 barrier -- with the 666 Yuan ($98) LY-EB01. This marketing marvel might have a processor slower than most netbooks' FSB at 266MHz, and its 128MB of RAM might spontaneously combust if you even type the word Vista into it, but it is, technically, a laptop. And you can totally store, like, a few hundred Word files on the 2GB flash drive. Having played around with the previous champ of the 'cheap 'n useless' weight class, we must at least congratulate Lanyu on a solid looking construction, and hey, apparently there's a chance for a release outside China. Aren't you excited?

I'd buy one .....
A new low has been reached. Let's all celebrate.
Still and all, pretty impressive for $100. Win XP costs that much, but since this is China, they probably just pirated it.
i bet 666 Yuan that thats a screw and not a webcam in the middle
It's a hole. A screw was too expensive.
its not Windows XP, its Windows CE 6 with Bliss wallpaper
and its not a laptop its a smartbook with specs that are worse than most cheap smartphones
Actually if you load a variant of PuppyLinux into memory that 128 meg ram chip and you have a decent web surfing machine. Good enough to store in your car and surf when around wifi...
If you buy it before the last week of August you get this free router....

I'd buy one too. With 64MB more of RAM, you just might be able to squeeze UNR in it!
It's the devil's machine!
You might think this sucks.
But this will be pretty sweet when you knock over 2/3 of the milk canisters at the fair and slip the drunk carnie a $10 to hand it over.
Actually yes I -am- excited :)
This is exactly what I need.. a small, cheap ass laptop that can be dedicated to running the remote control software for my sound system. So that when some ghetto punk steals it or spills a drink on it, I'm only out $98...
I can see this computer being used in some home automation applications. It's certainly impressive at $98. In before a $49 KIRF version pops up.
i hope your sound system software runs on Windows CE 5.0 (ARM processor).
sometimes my poop is more valuable then this thing
when you swallow a thumb drive?
It's ARM, not x86. :(
Worth knowing, but I might still get one for my kids. Or one each, even.
Ah--no, I won't. It's running Wince. I just assumed something that cheap would have Linux.
There are some Linux builds for ARM. But they aren't fully featured
@Grindboy: "But they aren't fully featured" -- Not sure what you mean by that. My Nokia N810 has almost everything I want; and the exceptions are pretty esoteric. (Basically, it doesn't have any compiled language except gcc/g++. So, in the Haskell world, I can run hugs, but not ghc.)
Of course, the real question would be whether Linux/ARM could be made to run on *this* hardware. I'm not interested enough to be the first one to spend $100 to find out.
What is this madness!?!??!? This is not a Zune HD! (sorry but I still want updated battery life expectations, not the past-gen battery specs pasted over.) But wow $98, impressive...very impressive. That it costs less than Leopard and 7 licenses is amazing all things considered.
At 98$ it can serve as an external battery pack for your zune hd. Problem solved.
I remember that India came up with a $100 "laptop" a while ago, but that thing was hardly a computer, more like a set top box. This one at least is a fully functional laptop.
It's better than my first laptop.
Same here. Much Better.
touchpad-buttons on the side? i'm out.
Don't diss "buttons on the side", I use it on my netbook all the time and it works just fine.
Just kidding. The last thing thats wrong with this thing is the button layout.
Wouldn't a DS be more useful
The nintendo DS runs on a ARM9 processor running at 67 MHz and an ARM7TDMI running at 33.5MHz, this runs on an ARM9 processor running at 266MHz. Somehow I don't see the DS as having more processing power.
But it plays more games than this computer.
:D
@Siris: DSi is 133MHz so it's getting closer... but it costs more than $99.
LOL WUT
Wait.....a 266mhz processor?? Aren't most smartphones running something more powerful than that nowadays?
Yes, but for 98 USD you can't argue. Remember how much something like this cost years ago? Throw a little more RAM into it and a super slim ( like the size of the logitech nano receiver) > 8 GB flash drive into the side and your gold. Sure slow, but for a approx 100 USD, this isnt such a bad deal
yeah theres no way anything actually RUNS on that
You forget there was a time when desktops were this powerful. We still did plenty of things on them. Like write documents and surf [an admittedly far simpler] web.
Why....?
Is it ironic that they're showing Windows XP running on it? I doubt that those specs could run XP. There are probably some variants of Linux that would run on it just fine, though. Well, as long as you turn off Compiz.
Actually, it's Windows CE (if you click the read link you can see all the specs)
xp can run on a machine with as little as 8mhz of processing power. which is irrelevant anyway since it isn't an x86 processor
dont forget that you can run it on 128mb of ram too but you dont see it happening and have to fight the install the whole way. Not to mention how shitty the interface looks, if they gave it a hip and trendy space background and moved the bar to the top would you think it was OSX... dont be a retard
@ chaostheory
Yeah I saw that too. Half an hour to load is not useful.
For a comparision of performance, it should be slightly faster than the HTC Excalibur/T-mobile Dash that came out in 2006. They have the same ARM platform, 266 MHz vs 201MHz, and twice the ram. You could run NES, SNES, and genesis emulators; and even then the SNES and genesis will run slow.
will this run Quake?
No, but it will play PacMan. And ping-pong.
All that matters is if it can do cut and paste.
Don't be ridiculous, Apple just invented copy and paste this year, and it can only be done on the iphone 3gs.
Khav: I LMAO'ed.
This is actually quite reasonable for what is only a wood processor. Writers rejoice.
