We've already heard whispers that Apple has an iPod event in the works
for the week of September 7th -- as they do pretty much every year -- and now alleged company sources are narrowing that date down, telling
Digital Daily to mark its calendar for Wednesday, September 9th.
Upgraded iPods are the apparent main course, along with some
Cocktail discussion, but as for tablets... well, the sources are adamant it won't get brought up at all. We're still awaiting official word to come shooting out of Cupertino headquarters, but in the meantime, plan on keeping that Wednesday afternoon as free as possible.
z0MG!!!
Well that ruined my day.. now it's the day AFTER the free ipod promotion. >.
Omg, Apple isn't gonna introduce the Tablet Computer? Now they're giving M$ a chance to steal their ideas and build a windows tablet!!!!11
@ David
Newly introduced iPods have never been part of the back to school promotion, and very likely never will be.

zOMG can only mean one of two things:
1) Apple is finally getting a user-removable battery for all devices.
2) you just saw prices for replacement battery surgery on all devices.
http://www.apple.com/batteries/replacements.html
Uwaga dude, steal apples idea of a tablet? There have been tablet windows PC's for years and years. And the apple "tablet" is more of a take on an UMPC than a tablet PC anyways.
Yeah David...the free promo is to get rid of stock to unsuspecting buyers
I don't get the point of the post... Yeah, no concrete stuff about a tablet, but the same can be said for any other information on new iPods. No swarms of rumors about a new nano or shuffle or classic. The only thing we have is some almost-pretty-certain stuff about a new iPod touch having a camera. I know it's not as interesting, but we have even less speculation in that department.
Replying to myself sort of.. I suppose you guys can catch me on the fact that the shuffle did get refreshed fairly recently and we likely won't be seeing anything new about it, but that said I think it's interesting to see what apple comes up with for a new nano, or if they phase out the classic completely.
has anyone noticed this is 6 days before the Zune HD is to be released?
@ SC and Jordan
I'm very aware of what the promotion is meant to do but the terms and conditions include the ipod touch, so unless the name is changed I don't see an issue with returning it for the new one. Apple only states that if a return or exchange is made that a copy of that receipt must also be included. I have until October to file so I'm hoping it works out. I'm spending 2700-2800 dollars on a laptop they should humor me. The crappy thing is Apple has NEVER thrown in adapters or cases or anything. Remember the days when you could bargain with salespeople????? =(
No surprise by the date. Same date as Beatles Rock Band.
This more than likely means the Beatles catalog will be released on iTunes this day.
I'll be my 5G 30GB iPod on it. Since I'll be replacing it with a 32GB Touch soon.
iphonerulez, why are you slopping up this bullshit? Why won't people boycott apple for adding one or two features every year, just to make earlier adopters obsolete? I mean a freaking compass?? that's pretty much the only difference between my iphone 3g and the 3gs.
The shuffle was updated in February, and has been in that timeframe in years past.
You probably don't hear rumors about the nano or classic because nothing interesting is really happening with them. In fact, the Classic probably going to die either this year or next (certainly next year if the iPod Touch reaches 128GB for $399). With the half-hearted update the Classic got last year, it's pretty easy to see that it's on its last legs (and probably worthy of something to have a funeral for, much like how OS 9 died in 2002).
xcrunk: Doubtful that the Beatles will be released, here is why:
iPhone 3GS was announced on June 9 and went on sale on June 19, and the 9th would have been the perfect time to announce the Beatles availability. Michael Jackson died on June 25. He is (was) the owner of the Beatles catalog, but his estate is still up in the air (and probably will be for a while). So unless they made a deal between the 9th to the 25th, and we surely would have heard an announcement by now, it will not happen until the estate is settled.
@ a range of posters.
Who developed what is long moot, Apple did the newton before wintablet, but whatever startrek did it years before, or robotech - they had tablets, flat panels, augmented. No one made anything, we all did.
I so hope there is no tablet, I use, sell and support Apple products but i am so sick of the tablet story. It's endless and boring.
It's not going to be all these bizzare stupid names. It's pretty obvious they have cleared the deck for MacBook, get it mac-book, I mean I don't know shit but it is bleedingly obvious.
The Beatles, that is nearly as recurring as the tablet form story. Anyway if you don't already have as much of the Beatles music as you want whAt have you been doing for the last 30+ years, who cares if it goes on iTunes or download from whereever. It's not like that will be makes it available.
I'm feeling I'll, thanks for the rant.
They will definitely hav the iPAD! Don't believe the lies!
iPAD sounds like apple's foray into the world of feminine hygiene...
I'm also not a fan of the name. Hopefully that was a codename.
the only tablet that will make news is the one that Jobs swallows thrice everyday
I think someone brought this up before..
But iPad sounds like an Irish guy trying to say iPod lol
Hmmm, if the iPAD comes out then, it'll be just the right time for that time of the month. 1000 songs in my panties? Day one purchase.
Technically wasn't there some codename called "iProd"
If sources are so serious about it not being brought up, it might be a good 'one more thing' candidate. Assuming Jobs is back on the podium, anyway.

OK, you're in. Now what?
Please keep the Classic...
that's honestly the only reason i've cared for an apple post
I've got a feeling were going to be disappointed on this one.
same. if that happens then i'll just be moving on to the newest zune to come out (or the zune 120 b/c retailers wouldn't have gotten all of them sold yet, and they'd be trying to sell them for a bit cheaper)
but still, think about it. if apple gets rid of the ipod classic, they have no hard drive based ipod on the market, meaning their highest capacity out will be 32gb (assuming they dont make the jump to 64gb yet, and release a modified line of itouches and nanos in january). so i really don't see why they'd want to get rid of it, but... hey, its apple. who ever knows what the hell they're planning on doing =\
That would be sad if they did away with the classic, however flash memory does make a large difference in the iPod's ability to last longer (I owned two classics and both had the hard drive fail within a year.... and apple was kinda obnoxious about replacing it under the extended warranty but that is a story for another time).
I would really like to get the Zune HD. It is so tempting to get it, but it doesn't support iTunes Store. That's my biggest concern. I have lots of Videos/Movies from iTunes for my iPod. If the Zune supported it, I would so get it. That is unless Apple tops them first!
I really want a new classic but it's only so I can put ALL of my music on it. I don't know why I care about that anyway. I usually just need ~8gb worth any other time. There's no way I can listen to all of that music at one time. I know someone will point to video being a big plus on the classic but that's why I think the Tablet and a larger Touch are in the works. Otherwise the classic will be getting a larger screen close to that of the Touch... who knows. I have ideas though ;)
they won't get rid of the touch. at least, not until they can put in a 128GB SSD in there. Maybe that'll be doable by 2010; wouldn't be surprised if it goes for $400, as opposed to the $220-250 now.
@ichheissesuperfantastisch
dude we're talking about the ipod classic. not the ipod touch. as in the only ipod with a hard drive.
and why the hell would they get rid of the ipod touch??!?! they're going to be milking out $ from the ipod touch for as many possible years to come...
An ipod touch with the camera and an updated processor and more flash memory. New iTunes. Announcement of the discontinuation of the HDD based ipods.
IMO, this could be the first time that the Zune hogs the limelight from the ipod.
The Zune will definitely hog the light from iPod this year. The iPod is stuck using the same specs as the iPhone, as long as it uses the same apps from the app store. They will have a camera and a microphone. Probably 64gb touch. Nothing really too special, at all. The Zune on the other hand...oled screen, tegra processor, inexpensive, nice interface - looks more tempting all the time.
no way are they discontinuing the HDD ipods. Not everyone wants the touchscreen, and not everyone wants the shitty Nano, which is only good for working out.
@above :
Yeah, thats what you think.
But Apple ? Yeah..you get it..right ?
Sorry Apple, Beatles Rock Band has my full attention that day!
What a coincidence, two products that have been out for a couple years and are essentially the exact same product they were when they were originally released, being re-released as "new" on the same day. You fork over that money good little fanboys, yes you are, yes you are. who's my good little fanboy.
Yeah, NO tablet, thats mac stuff, for beginning of next year... DUH!
Or October?
Continue to be douches like you typing meaningless comments.
Did someone say NEW iPODS? OMFG. With a CAM AND A MIC? Might as well call it an iPhone while you're at it.
Except you couldn't because it wouldn't be a phone... o_O
Dont know what the big deal about cameras in ipods is.. everyone already has crappy sub-point-and-shoot quality cameras in their cellphones already. It just seems silly, actually... like they ran out of features to add.
...I don't have a cellphone.
I agree, add another useless component to a device just so you can call it new and updated and guzzle more money out of people's wallets for nothing special.
Then instead of splurging $200+ on a PMP, get a cheapo cellphone and a point and shoot.
Think I'll go see 9 instead.
Wednesday?!
That's what I was thinking...doesn't Apple like Tuesdays?
I just want a 64gb iPod touch with the speedier innards of the iPhone 3GS. I don't care if it has a camera or not.
That's what I want. I am hoping for GPS too but I doubt it highly. I couldn't care less about a camera.
Wow this late and no leaked rumor of specs on the IPOD Book only leaked pictures.
itablet= ebook reader/ multimedia device mark my words my fellow nerds
Thats my birthday yo! (:
32GB Nano please and thank you.
I wish we'd stop talking about iTablet / iPad / etc.
I for one hope there ISN'T one.
how dare you speak against that which is apple seek forgiveness and you will be spared from wearing skinny jeans in public.
How dare you, sir! Reported.
How dare you speak against that which is COMMON SENSE, seek forgiveness and you will be spared from paying 1,500+ dollars to buy a tablet PC.
tablet mac*
i hope there is one, because it will fail in apple's face like the newton. Apple needs to learn that they don't control the world, they need a failure to remind them that consumers will not buy everything just because they put it out and it's shiny. The need a failure to make them more consumer friendly.
Oh, they've failed big before:
The G4 Cube
AppleTV (can't hold a candle to other set-top boxes)
and of course, the not so venerable:
Apple Hi-Fi
[Disclaimer: I'm generally a big fan of Apple products, I use primarily Macs, have an iPhone and own iPods, but some products just shouldn't make it to market].
@coyotej
i too have had ipods in the past and DO enjoy their products, and also find the flaws in the company, but unless you look around for the information, when do you ever know of their products being failures? go ask around. most people don't even know that apple tv or apple hi-fi exist.
it comes down to people like us who have to look under the rug that apple abused and hid so many things over the years to keep their company 'spotless' to truly desipher where a company stands in this huge market scheme
Actually apple consumers will still buy it no matter what. And like a few other apple products (such as apple tv) it will fail miserably, yet apple will continue to "enhance" the product, but it really won't fix anything, but they will still act like it's an amazing product. At least Microsoft admits that vista sucks.
LOL, Microsoft never openly admits to Vista sucking. They just had to face the numbers, and tried their darndest to advertise that it was "teh WOW", remember? Many advertising campaigns failed for Microsoft w.r.t. Vista.
When Apple releases a niche or "failed" product, it fades away because there is no interest and they are admitting defeat by giving up on it: they don't speak of it again. Vista is a whole different beast, because most computers sold today SHIP with it by default (except netbooks and Macs).
So if Apple releases a tablet and it's a failure, it will fade away like anything else, and there's nothing wrong with that. Trying to shove it in everyone's face after it is clearly substandard is FAR more offensive to me.
Wait for Apple to invent the iPad so they don't have to get the "me-too" MS versions that already came out
This is good, i need a new ipod:)
Guys here is a rule of thumb...
if the "iPad" is announced at a music event filled with new iPods and "Cocktail" then it will mean a massive failure for the device since anything costing $600-900 a fitting a new Apple niche deserves front billing at a major event if it needs to tag along it means it is a crippled media pad running iPhone apps and that my friends is NOT worth $600-900.
my friend when will you realize that money means nothing to us apple customers i dont about you but i swim in hundred dollar bills.
@sergio...
eww.. you touch public money? That's just disgusting.
You and your money can buy one of these iPads and then find out how useless it is. Of course then you can go buy something else that's shiny and expensive to comfort yourself lol
Hahahahaha That is SO clever!
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
If there's no iPad, iTablet, Holographic iPod interfaces, DVR AppleTV, iPhone 4G S with a OLED and a keyboard, and a new version of OS X then I'm going to poop.
I'll poop anyway.
I wouldn't hold my breath.
Introducing Malibu iPod with New Hat!
Still looking for a reason to give a shit...
The iPod Touch doesn't make a lot of sense for most people anymore. I mean the majority of people only want to carry one device(their cellphone). Very very few normal users carry both an iPhone and a MP3 player.
Now if you can have a cellphone with enough storage to save all your songs and you only listen to your songs on your daily commute which I'm guessing would be less than an hour a day for most people then whats the purpose of buying an MP3 player when your phone can meet all those demands?
An MP3 player with 16 or 32GB of storage is practically useless nowadays so I think Apple will discontinue those models and give us a 64GB and 128GB package.
Thats the kind of storage phones can't touch yet and would give Apple a market with the media junkies with the average user choosing to go with an all in one solution rather than carry two seperate devices.
To be honest though I'm not bothered about MP3 players anymore. I can already add a 16 and 32GB memory card to my Android phone and it gets the job as an MP3 player done fairly well.
What it sucks at is video, internet surfing and reading. Thats where a Tablet comes in. Integrate music playing features into cellphones then launch a tablet PC that can play high res video, read books and surf the net. Put in a nice accelerometer and you can turn the device to the side like a Kindle or if you want to view a webpage in portrait form. On the other hand watch a video on Youtube HD or one of your own videos on the device and turn it sideways.
I think MP3 players are dead with cellphones taking those functions on board. On the other hand the Tablet has stab at being a companion to your cellphone.
the flaw in your thinking is that you assume everyone wants a cell phone, or only one device, or is in a situation in which owning appropriate, or has any need whatsoever for a smartphone.
Standalone players will likely never die out as there is a huge market for people who don't want, or can't get, a mobile phone. GEnerally I agree with you in principle; owning both makes no sense. But that's because it's appropriate for me to have an AIO device. For many, it isn't.
Plus, paying a huge monthly premium for a device you can get easily on a one-time-cost basis is ridiculous to many ppl.
MP3 players may be dying, but until the iPhone is available on all carriers Apple still has a rather large market to tap into with them.
I think that your wrong about no one wanting an MP3 player. While most people here have iPhones... there are plenty of people who don't (I being one of them).
I refuse to go to At&t and T-mobile is even worse... because of this, there is no way for me to get an iPhone... what's the next best thing... an iTouch that way i have all the apps, music and media options... and i get to keep my current phone, plan and carrier.
I do agree that most people WITH an iPhone do not want a iPod Touch.... why would you? they are pretty much the same device, that's the whole point to having an iPhone.
Bottom line there are plenty of people who don't have an iPhone but want the functionality... and while a media pad/Itablet would be nice... i'm not dropping over $500 on a large iPod Touch.
I own an iTouch because I don't feel like shelling out all of my $$$ every month for an AT&T plan. I can live with basic texting and calling on my cell while using wi-fi and all the other features associated with the iTouch, and in the process I'm saving HUGE bank.
Too bad about the iPod camera. I mean it's great and all, but it would be much nicer to have a real GPS in there.
The keynote will be on the day that the Beatles digitally remastered CD collection gets released too? I have a feeling that The Beatles will finally be in iTunes.
I think that'd be the main reason for Apple to move the keynote to a Wednesday instead of their usual Tuesday. Though they could've easily made it a Tuesday and announce it'll be in the store by tomorrow. Or maybe Jobs is taking a page from Woz's book and using the repetitive numbers. Maybe I'm thinking this over too much.
Makes plenty of sense, but I can't help but think offering the whole catalogue through iTunes would detract from sales of the remastered CD collection, which I plan on picking up. I'm hoping that the new CDs will even merit a comparison to my LPs. But Apple Records will take The Beatles anywhere where they can make a killing, so we'll see. The game will sell, so that should prompt people to buy the real music, I'd hope. The Beatles are after all, the greatest band of all time.
Now what would be great is an announcement linking a digital Beatles offering to the rumored Cocktail platform. Steve is known to be huge Beatles fan, and negotiations have been on and off for so long... surely they're talking right now with the game hitting shelves soon. I'd buy a new device gladly for some extra documentary footage and whatnot, although I have to wonder what they could possibly offer that I haven't seen already.
If the Beatles' remastered collection makes it to iTunes, do you think there will be a lossless format option?
they're seriously moving the whole keynote just for the fuckin' beatles catalog? Even if the target market still listens to the beatles, chances are they have that shit on MP3 or CD already.
