PlayStation 3 Slim unboxing and hands-on!

Update: Some details for clarification. The buttons in the front are now physical and actually "click" in to function. The PS logo above the disc drive does not rotate for vertical use, and yes, the hard drive is swappable -- as you can see from the pictures, there's a screw on the bottom, hidden by a panel, that lets you take off part of the front for access. We've also lined it up against our standard, fatty PS3, and we gotta say, it's noticeably lighter.
Update 2: Here's a more thorough comparison between the slim, the original, and the Xbox 360. Some people were asking about the texture of the matte finish, and compared to Microsoft's console, it's just a teensy bit rougher (and on that note, about the same weight, too). It's still just as glossy as the original on the sides, however. We still gotta compare the noise of the slim, stay tuned!
Update 3: While our tests were far from thorough, the initial results from our quick-and-dirty decibel ratings show some promise. With a baseline of 49 decibels, the Slim averaged 53 to 56 db when in use / playing a game / installing data (in this case, Metal Gear Solid 4), compared to the 55 to 58 db of the original. Blu-ray movie playback is where it becomes noticeable, as the slim peaked for us at 60 db when the original was doing 70 db running the same disc.

Too bad the stop is still curved so you can't put any other components on top of it. Though I guess that might be a heat concern anyway.
Ouch this thing is UGLY, I bet the SONY industrial design department was
told to take the day off when the accountants approved this version
-but then again, I don't think making it attractive was the point here.
SONY's been bleeding money on this PS version since it came out a
year after the 360. Better luck next time. Interesting how the tables
can turn so quickly on manufacturers. Nintendo to SEGA, SEGA to SONY,
SONY to Nintendo/XBOX. Who knows, maybe it will make its back around
to Atari :-p
I have a table just like that! Soulmates!
Its official the hackettman will get a PS3........ Sony has won me back........
OMG =O thats really cool Can I have that box ??? pleeez engadget
How's the upconversion of normal DVDs?
I'm looking at this as a bargain for both BluRay and next-gen gaming - neither of which I've bought into separately yet. But of course I still have a lot of low-def DVDs.
I hear the original PS3 is great at upconverting. I'm wondering if you've given this a comparison test, in case the Slim hardware and software have changed anything for better or worse.
Please test and tell us if this baby bitstream DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD!
Don't lie. You used the iPhone decibel app for those sound tests.
I don't know why people don't like the matte look, I love it!
But that's pity for the buttons, I prefered the fat ps3 ones ...
Anyone know if the PSU is universal ?? (i.e. will take 100-240v 50-60Hz despite what is says on the back of the PS3)
All of the previous PS3 PSUs have been so, it'd be a shame if it changed...
Ugly? Too wide? Nope!
I just spent a bit of time playing with one and comparing it with the original. The slim is much smaller and doesn't look as chinsey as the original fat ps3. That fake plasticy chrome look, and those 'orrible curves. Yak! That's one of the reasons I didn't buy the original. And the fact it was too expensive.
The slim is a lot more subtle. It will fit in with the rest of your AV kit much better than the fat would. And it integrates with the Brava TVs better. And its cheaper.
I was toying with seeing if the fats would come down even cheaper than the slim. But now I've seen it, I really wouldn't want a fat.
Does the slim still make those annoying beeps when you turn it on or off?
loved the video, appreciated the lounge jazz soundtrack. that's all, carry on.
Finally it looks like a JAPANESE designed electronics item. The old PS3 had TOO MUCH American design influence with the stupid fonts and shiny body and all. Pledge to designers: When it comes to electronics, PLEASE LEAVE THE DESIGN TO JAPANESE.
Not nearly as elegant as the previous casing, and the top exterior looks downright tacky, right down from the textured finish to the very defined and flimsy-looking eject/power buttons [which were so discrete and sleek on the older models]. The previous PS3 had more of an avant-garde appearance - this is more utilitarian. With that said, the overhaul is being met with a long-needed price drop from Sony which will give them a sharp sales boost. The only advantage of this SKU is the compactness of the unit - the PS3 "phat" is quite a beast - Then again, I don't lug my PS3 everywhere I go, so weight and size is really a nonissue to me.
That shit look stupid...
I like the music theme. It's relaxing and soothing
guess whos saving up their lunch money lol
The rotating logo was the best feature.
If they added so much as a TAC of Chrome on it, it would have looked a thousand times more appealing. Cheap textured Plastic = Do not want.
i have one looka way better in ur own hands and gamestop has a deal if u trade in a ps2 2 controolers and a memory card u get 50$ off so if u do that ur price comes out to 250$
