Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store
See that? It's an Android-green invitation to the unveil of the 5-inch Archos Internet Media Tablet. The September 15th date isn't new (it was announced back in June) but it's still good to see things moving ahead as planned. To whet the appetites of would-be developers, Archos has also announced its AppsLib application store for "advanced Android devices." The development guidelines, however, describe just a single, 5-inch 800x480 pixel device with accelerometer, OpenGL 3D graphics support, and HDMI output pushing an oddball 1160x652 pixel resolution to your TV. Right, specs already rumored for the Archos tablet. While not mentioned, we still expect all the other details -- 500GB storage, 10-mm thickness, 7-hours of battery when playing video, voice and HSUPA data radio, and OMAP3440 processor -- unexpectedly announced (by TI!) for the tablet way back in February to be in place when this thing gets live in Paris next month.

500 GB storage?
are you shure?
Other than that: sounds nice, but what is it with the stupid appstores for every single device?
How about just producing apps for the OS and not just the device?
Or is this the new trend? Make programs just specifically for one device, sot that we are going to see an apple macbook13" store, an powermac store, a HP pavilon store, and asus eeestore, an acer timeline store, an lenovo thinkpad store and a lenovo ideapad store and so on ...
Ich much rather prefer to have an app that is made for an OS (or better yet multiplatform, like a lot in the open source crowd).
There are 2.5 inch 500GB drives out for a while now. The next best things are 640 GB and 1TB 2.5 drives.
The original Archos was first portable media player to use OMAP 3430 with 600 Mhz Cortex A8 core. Since then many devices, iPhone, Samsung i8910 HD, etc has used it. Archos sets the trend again now, guess we know what next year's portable media player will be powered by.
The reason they are using this app store instead of the default Android Market is this app store specialises in apps designed for larger/higher resolution screens. It should still be possible to install .apk files for normal Android apps but the experience may not be ideal.
If thats true Gary Then after donut is released there shouldnt be a problem anymore as android will support a higher resolution.
Come to think of it this tablet must have bits of 2.0 to even run that higher resolution.
It's all well and good Android itself supporting higher resolutions but it's still the individual app developers responsibility to make sure their apps work well on larger screens, I think Appslib is designed to guarantee that.
Yawn!
uhm... isn't this Archos 9 and not Archos 5 they are talking about ? or I'm mistaken ?
yep, I think it's called "Archos 9" even though it's a 5 inch screen. you guys at engadget should change the title... or just add "inch" between "5" and "Internet Table" ;-)
No, This is the new Archos 5 with Android, the Archos 9 has already been announced and is a 9 inch touchscreen with windows 7.
also, I think they're keeping the price under 500$, but that still needs to be confirmed.
nope, I think it's the Archos 9. the Archos 5 is already out for sale since a long time and is rather a PMP than a Tablet. Archos 9 will support Win7 and Android.
You must be quite dumb.
@rapheal
you think wrong.
Give it up already, Archos. You build glitchy crap. We know you build glitchy crap. You know you build glitchy crap. NO ONE IS BUYING YOUR CRAP ANYMORE. You want us to take you seriously and purchase something from you? GO BACK AND FIX THE LAST 3 GENERATIONS OF LEMONS YOU SOLD US FIRST. Take a hike, no one trust you anymore.
To be fair they've always had high end hardware so now that they're leaving software duties to software companies like Opera, Google, and Microsoft, they should fair much better
Archos has always had great innovations but their hardware has always been faulty. They do things years before its popular. Back in 2004 I had the archos jukebox w/ a video player, voice recorder, radio, video out feature w/ remote; all kinds of attachments and w/ like 40 gb of storage. Only problem is it broke right after the manufacturers warranty was up. It happened the same way to 2 other archos players I had before that.
Did Apple just head fake all its competitors into making Internet Tablets (eg. Big Screen iPod Touches)?
That would be pretty funny.
On the other hand, if Apple just releases new iPod touches on the Sept 9 Event, and nothing 'new' it will be seriously boring.
... on the other hand, if Apple just releases an internet tablet, it will also be boring.
archos has been putting out (crappy) tablets for the last three years. amazing how fanboys think competitors predicate their every move on what apple MIGHT do.
cant put my finger on it... but the zii egg seems better than this (minus storage space and lack of 3g radio..... but that can be changed at any time)
oh yea... resolution. forgot about resolution. but still...
Personally I won't ever buy another Archos product.
I've been a repeat customer since the Jukebox 6000 and now have an Archos 5.. I LOVE the hardware.. I'm just sick of this company that doesn't follow through with promises of support and add-ons. Take the GPS option for example.. came out for the 605 series.. still no optional maps can be purchases, still no map updates. Then they "updated" the firmware on the Archos 5 to allow using the GPS option with it.. or did they? It was still buggy.. (main problem was crashing when trying to use POI options) dozens of calls to tech support later and being told an update would come someday.. I finally got pointed to an FTP site to download new installer software for the A5.. did it work? No.. the file structure was wrong.. I fixed the file structure and got it working now... I've written letters and gotten no replies and made dozens of calls and the best they could do was (this is for real) advised me to sell the A5 and the GPS and buy the Archos 9.. Say what? To that I say piss off and while I will continue to enjoy my Archos 5 on trips for what it does do well.. (play movies), I will not be dupt into investing any more money in Archos. They have great hardware and shit for software support, customer support, web site support, etc, etc. It's been a steady stream of, let's get new hardware out and drop support for stuff people already bought.
totally agree. great hardware, but software really poor, and customer support inexistent. on the other side, this is Android, so we hope there will be apps to handle all needs.
Archos is the best company in the world.
They make the best electronic devices in the world.
This device will change the internet as we know it. It has 200 times the screen area of an iPhone and is 1% bigger. It has the fastest processor ever made and will be able to show 2160p video at 98 fps while simultaneously browsing the internet and calculating the first 8 million digits of Pi. Peace and harmony will come to the world as all combatants stop their wars and buy an Archos device.
Soon Archos will be making so much money that they will buy out the lowly Appple and their measly iPhone.
I'm Chorbax, and I own no Archos stock.
Seriously.... Archos makes good leading-edge hardware. But their product all comes out 90% ready, and it can be extremely frustrating to deal with this, as they don't have the resources to really provide good tech support.
The really significant item in this information release is that Archos is apparently going to allow third party software for the first time. That's a huge change for this company, as the other major criticism against them in the past has been that their device is totally locked down. We'll see if this new system works better. I predict growing pains, but it can't be worse than the current situation where only Archos provides software, so there is nothing really to choose from.
well if I'm right, you'de look really dumb, right ?

please check things before hating people.
what? its running windows-all it should come with is a piece of software that allows other software to be used with expanded buttons
Been thinking about an Internet-browsing device to carry around the house. Perhaps this is it. Will wait for reviews.
If you buy an Archos... I feel for you..
I wish they would bring back a 4" pmp.
Everytime I see "pmp" I think about that 50 cent song "I don't know whatcha heard about me....I'm the mothafuckin' P I M P". Just felt it necessary to opine.
Hmm...this or Zii Egg...I'm deff getting one of them, so can finally get my Android on (being on AT&T makes that otherwise difficult)
I do agree that Archos tech support can be an exercise in frustration to deal with; however, they do make the best PMP IMO. I use the Archos 5 daily to record my favorite TV shows, and then watch the shows while traveling the next day. The screen is great, the built-in stand a welcomed feature, and (with the optional plug-in) you can play just about any SD video codec directly without the timely conversion required by many of the other brands. Before the Archos 5, I used the 605WiFi which was also a great device. The 605 still works fine. I am a gadget geek, hence the update to the Archos 5. Assuming the new Android device is available in the US, I am sure that will be added to my collection as well.
I would like to see Archos pay more attention to software updates, and not promise things they ultimately do not deliver. However, there is no other device for my video needs that comes close to the Archos devices. Also have an Archos 7 with the bigger screen. For my video needs, the iPod touch is a toy compared to the Archos 5. I am talking about video recording, and playback, not the app store. Yes, I do own the iPod touch to gain experience with mobile Safari, Mobile OS X, and multi-touch (all overrated IMO), but rarely use it for video. The Archos is so much better for watching video (bigger screen, higher resolution), and of course, the iPod touch cannot record video directly from an external video source.
Sounds interesting. I´ll wait until there´s more than some empty promises from their marketing dept.
raphael, sorry but you are incredibly stupid.
Somehow you think the article talks about "Archos 5", when it just states "5-inch Archos"... Get the difference? Yes, the "Archos 5" has been our for quite some time, good for you Sherlock.
Now, let's clearify:
The Archos 9 is an Win 7 Interned Media Tablet that has been already been announced. It has NOTHING to do with Android.
This article is about an unreleased sequel to the "Archos 5. Read this article:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/04/5-inch-android-powered-archos-internet-media-tablet-landing-in-s/
Then admit how stupid you are.
oh crap, and i was just sold on zunehd!
hmmmmmmmm........
@scape
Zune HD is for more portable use and to bring to the gym, watch mpeg,mp4 movies...
Archos is more of a portable but more fragile (HDD) player. Also, AVI is supported.
I am going to buy both.
I think its the 'mysterious' MID engadget has been showing the past couple of days:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/17/mysterious-android-mid-gets-more-pictures-still-no-name/
I mean it looks like it fits the bill ( e.g 10mm thickness, 5'' screen ) AND it was from the same news source, pocketables...
