i gotta say that i'm glad i got the old 80gb with backwards compatiability...this thing is rather ugly too.
Wow this thing looks ssoooo cheap!!!
Come on Sony i know you can do way better.
At least your software is getting better, but i am goning to stick with my 80 GB with 4 USB and backward compatibility.
It looks better, plays PS2 games, and makes my room nice and toasty :)
I agree with you. I am quite happy with my 1st generation 60 GB Playstation 3. I often play PS2 games on it and enjoy having an actual Emotion Engine inside of it. I don't think I'd give up the PS2 backwards compatibility no matter how thin or cheap they make one, even if the thing is a loud massive beast that seems to increase the air temperature in my room by 10 degrees while running a game.
+1 for all of you. I don't even own a PS3 but I would get the big one before getting the slim. I feel like it is just a marketing gimmick combined with a price drop that Sony uses to push consoles. I think if you put the slim in place where you couldn't fit a 1st gen in a few hours all your going to have is a $300 slim brick.
Wow! The new PlayStation 3, or should we say – PS 3 Slim, is now only $299. That is awesome!
I bought the original PlayStation 3 with 60 GB of memory for $600 (in January 2007), and I love it. The PS 3 Slim looks really nice. But beyond looks, this is the system Sony has been planning and hoping to introduce ever since the PlayStation 3 first came out in November 2006. What is incredible is that Sony (a $90 Billion company – based upon 2008 revenue) has finally delivered the ultimate gaming experience. The fact that they have sold 24 million PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles in less than 3 years is astonishing, considering the initial high price ($600) of the PS 3 console. Yes, they lowered the price first from $600 to $500, and then to $400. But this price was still too high. Imagining the PS 3 selling for $400, competing against the Wii – which was (and is still) selling for $250, and the XBOX 360 (without a hard drive) selling for $199. In fact, the PS 3 overtook the XBOX 360 in sales, forcing Microsoft to sell the diskless version of the XBOX 360 in order to increase sales.
The new price of $299 spells a new era for the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 now has a 120 GB hard drive, the Cell Processor, NVIDIA Graphics, Wireless Controllers, and a Blu-ray drive (which can hold 50 GB of game data on a single disk and also play Blu-ray movies at full high definition TV resolution of 1080p at 60 fps - frames per seconds), all for only $299. The PS 3 now cost only $50 more than the Nintendo Wii. The Wii has low resolution graphics, no hard drive, and sells for $250. Sony now has the most competitive gaming device on the planet – based upon features, game library, and price.
Conclusion:
A new era for the PlayStation 3 has begun at this new $299 price point. The PlayStation 2 sales surpassed 140 million in 9 years. The PlayStation 3 has sold 24 million in less than 3 years (at a high price point), but the real (PS 3) sales will now begin as the millions of PlayStation 2 gamers will now find that the PlayStation 3 is now more affordable – and they can play games in high definition (1080p) and can also play and enjoy watching Blu-ray movies as well on their television. Well done Sony!
I agree, i never got a ps3 but i did own a ps2, the downside of the ps3 is that you could have gotten the discontinued 800$ ps2 compatible version or waited to get the cheaper piece of crap with no card reader or ps2 less usb or get this slimmer
whats the point of making it slim? everyone should have lots of room to put something thats like an inch thicker without the potential to overheat and blow up north america, sony shouldnt have taken the time trying to fit a lot of power into a smaller package. im more pumped for something like what ms is doing, a basic price drop and got the new xbox in the works for 2010
@ Thinker
dude what the hell did sony put in your ass to make you spout off that worthless marketing propaganda like that?
everyone knows that sony has performed the worst this console generation, and this is their attempt at getting back in the game.
the ps3 slim is mildly interesting, but what i'm most intrigued by is the price drop.
i've had a 360 for almost 2 years now and i've always wondered what the grass is like on the other side....maybe i'll take a look now.
"era of the 300 dollar ps3"-- here i come.
dumbass.
Am I the only one that thinks this console is butt- ugly?
@ Jimminy
No you are not the only one who thinks the slim is butt ugly. I agree with you 100% the slim is for those who do not already have a ps3. Ill stick with my beastly all out 320GB 1st gen 60GbPS3 that i paid $636 for.
No touch buttons = FAIL.
Uhhh, what?
xbox 360 slim in 2010, im calling it right now
Stop taking my idea
Why would Microsoft make a slim model, the size of the console has never been an issue.
Why wouldnt they, size matters, in this case slimmer is better. I would love to have a slim 360 (with a blue ray player)!
hmm...a slim 360 with a blue-ray player that kinda sounds like a...slim PS3 i guess its time u make the change
"blue ray player"
/facepalm
If the playstation online community was anywhere near the xbox live community i would make the switch, for now everyone i know is on xbox live. I think microsoft can further itself from the competition by making a few changes, then they will be the "king of the consoles". go team.
How about an Xbox 360 that won't red ring?!
To be fair, my xbox rrod, and it was the best thing that happened, they replaced it and now it works like new, i also received an additional 90 days warranty. What more can you ask for?
you could ask for a system that doesnt break
Every system has a percent of machines that will malfunction, and although the 360 had a much larger percentage than most, the system is solid. I would like the web browsing functionality that the ps3 has, and wifi should be built in. Other than that, what more would you want.
I've had one of the first Xbox 360's and it never rrod or E74. Still works solid. I haven't seen anyone say "I got the rrod, screw MS". I've seen more people switch from PS3 to 360 than the other way around. MS knows how to do one thing well, get people to use their product and keep them using it.
@ dragotequila :: You can't honestly say that since your 360 didn't have any trouble, that the 360 is impervious to its share of problems. Just as you've seen people switch from PS3 to 360, I've seen the opposite.
I'm not so sure it's Microsoft doing something well. People that get used to any product are more likely to keep using it for that exact reason: they're used to it. I never had any interest in the original Xbox or the 360. Why? I owned a PS1, then a PS2, so I continued with what I was familiar with.
Nothing against the 360 at all. I'm quite jealous of Xbox live. I'm just saying: to each his own.
"Every system has a percent of machines that will malfunction, and although the 360 had a much larger percentage than most, the system is solid"
Jumbo shrimp.
If the playstation online community was anywhere near the xbox live community i would make the switch, for now everyone i know is on xbox live. I think microsoft can further itself from the competition by making a few changes, then they will be the "king of the consoles". go team.
Why was this down rated? His statements are true for alot of people. I agree about the "I think microsoft can further itself from the competition by making a few changes" Comments. Let me start
Integrate the WIFI
Make the HD generic so ANY SATA drive will work
Fix the RROD FOREVER
Give it a freaking Web browser and Flash support!
Puggs, you are a good man, low ranked me, lot of people drank their hater-ade today!
@Mr. Blue :: I never said that that since my 360 never got the RROD, the 360 is impervious to its share of problems. Nor did I try to insunuate it, because a 5 year old would know that was BS. I was simply stating that not all 360's experience that issue as most people are trying to imply. True people keep using a product because they are used to it. But it's what the company did right in the first place to have them get to that point. They must've did something right to get them to the point of purchasing it. Just as Sony did something right for you to have you own a PS1, PS2 and so on.
Good example is Sony. Back in the Days their TV quality was far beyond anyone else's. Now they just run on their name. TV is still good but too overpriced. People will still buy it because They did something right in the beginning and just coasted. MS has a great Live community, can't deny that. And the more people are on it, the more their friends are going to switch because "it's where everyone is". Whether or not they are going to coast is hard to tell, but I'll tell you something, my Netflix works great.
as far as i know the newest Jasper 360 revision is supposed to be much more reliable. it's in all new Arcade units, not sure about pro or elite yet.
and making a smaller console isn't really a big deal since most people rarely move them, but putting out a new slim version of a console is a good way to boost sales.
The PS3 Slim is slimmer than the Xbox 360, and thats without even including the power brick. I think its almost impossible to make a 360 slim.
So...will this slim version of the PS3 have any heating/cooling issues? Or was this not an issue when PS2 brought out the slim version.
I had a slim PS2 and I never had an issues.
I have it and never had issues. Bought the slim the same day it came out.
Alright. You've now got a system at a price point comparable to the Wii and 360, Sony. Would it really have been too freaking hard to throw in BC and pull people away from purchasing the old PS2s in favor of the PS3 Slim?
Think about it, Sony is making a high profit margin on the ps2 and making peanuts on the ps3. I think it is a good corporate move and makes good financial sense. Including bc for free will just lose them money.
My PS2 still works, not that I use it at all nowadays. If they're going to throw in remote play of PS2 titles through the PS3 or some fancy shit like that it might actually be useful.
The production costs of the PS3 have come WAY down. They will be making a profit on them soon.
Can I haz that PS3 Slim?
If you stop talking like that... well, no. Still no.
If I had to give this picture a name it would be "Little Console, Big City"
So when i buy my PS3 slim what game should i get ?
Little Big Planet
Infamous. make sure you grab a few blu-ray movies (i.e. 300)
MGS4 and Uncharted
Warhawk! It's the best game no one's heard about and best PS3 game.
Hard to say when we don't know your preferences.
I'd recommend Killzone2, Uncharted, MGS4, Little Big Planet, InFamous. There are many more titles worth investigating.
Ratchet & Clank, Infamous, Killzone 2 & Uncharted
I see the Slim and can't shake the image of a Sega Genesis out of my head... So I say, Mutant League Football.
I second the nod for MGS4. Madden 10 is coming out. Also consider some of the more interesting DLC like Flower and PixelJunk Eden if you want to mix it up a bit. Battlefield 1943 is enjoyable for the price (
You know what would have been cool from Sony, 2 SKU's, one with b/c and no blu-ray for 199.99 and one with no b/c but with blu-ray for 250.00, the latter the option for multiple OS. That way those who have a Ps3 would still get the one with no blu-ray for a second room and Sony is still pumping out Ps2 games and the other for the new comers that don't have or care about a Ps2. I would of gotten both.
