Sony: PlayStation 2 compatibility 'is not coming back' to PS3
Cling to that Cell-based PlayStation 2 emulator patent all you want, but Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller has some disparaging words for those wanting Shadow the Colossus to one day work one the latest hardware. PS2 backwards compatibility "is not coming back, so let me put that on the table," he told Ars Technica, soon after reaffirming, "that won't be returning." Apparently people have been buying the PS3 not for PS2 titles but for the newest games and Blu-ray movies -- and given PS2's continued dominance in sales, presumably to play those last-gen games, we don't doubt it. Seeing such a feature standard in all other consoles out there, including the first two iterations of this one, we can't help but feel burned. Still, it was less than two months ago when Sony's mantra was no PS3 price cuts, and funny enough, that's more or less what happened. So if Koller wants to go back on his word and offer PS2 compatibility further down the line, hey, we'll forgive him.

One day it will, when the PS2 is dead. Just like the PS1.
one day there will be cheap 360 accessories. Oh and a young jedi will bring balance to the force and peace to the galaxy.
The lack of PS2 backwards compatibility really hurts the Slim. Basically, the best PS3 would technicaly be the original 60GB on Ebay since it retains its media card slots and backwards compatibility via chipset.
Would it have hurt to leave in software emulation?
How am I gonna play Gradius V and Contra: Shattered Soldier if my PS2 dies?
it's funny how Slim just isn't as slim as it used to be
the PSOne could be called the original slim and it was just plain tiny, the PS2 Slim was thin alright but still bigger than the PSOne, but calling this new PS3 Slim is kind of an insult to the PS2 Slim and PSOne
When I really think about it, the lack of Backward compatibility is as stupid as can be.
The PS2 has 10 titles coming out thus far for 2010.
The PS2 has a library of over 1800 titles - games that are still in virtually all electronic store shelves.
Isn't Sony wasting money manufacturing and supporting maintanence for PS2's?
Why not just manufacture PS3's instead with software emulation?
@JohnTitor
To the best of my knowledge "PS3 slim" is not the official name for this, it's just the new Playstation 3. And for that matter, the "PS2 slim" is not an official name either. "Slim" is simply a word people use to differentiate this new model from the previous one; it's relative. Considering how long it took for the revised versions of the PS and PS2 to come along after their originals, you can hardly call the new PS3 an insult to the PSone or new PS2. Furthermore, when you look at what Sony has been doing with the PSP it wouldn't be surprising if there are going to be more revisions of the PS3 in the years to come (which might live up to your thin standards)
John Titor... good one...
I'll buy the PS3 when it can play my PS2 games. End of story for me. I hope there are many others who feel the same way.
@Vance. Won't happen....Sony still sells a great many PS2's...prolly want to continue making that sweet sweet money. They are 100 bucks on Amazon
well if you wanna get all official then yes
Sony never actually called these devices Slim, not the PS2, PSP, or PS3,
while we're at it, there's no such thing as a "wiimote" and "Wii" is supposed to be said without an article preceding it
@Vance
I'm sorry but you missed that boat. I'd sell you mine, but I have even more reason to hold onto it.
I agree with Vance... the only problem is I want Blu-Ray soon.. and once I buy a standalone player I honestly won't even consider the PS3 anymore.
@vance
Don't you get it, you are buying a ps3 to play ps3 games, not ps2 games, thats why it is called a PS3! Thats like saying "well, i was gunna buy a Ferrari, but since they dont offer it with a little powerless four cylinder I dont want it". Makes no sense does it? Besides, it seems like you already have a working ps2 anyways so if all you were gunna do is play ps2 games, wouldnt that just be a waste of $300? And you would be missing out on all the great ps3 games out there.
I agree with Vance, the only problem is I want Blu-Ray pretty soon and that means buying a standalone. Once that happens I won't ever consider the PS3 again..
@giislander
It's more like Ferrari come out and say "people buy our cars to race" and then stop offering street legal sports cars.
The PS3 can play PS1 games downloaded from the store, sooner or later Sony will release PS2 games and I'm sure those can be played too right?
Does anyone know what Sony used for the MGS bundle for BC? Obviously the Graphics Synthesizer GPU still had to been in there, but were they emulating the Emotions CPU or did they put that expensive piece of metal back in just for that SKU?
From what I understood, that was an advanced SKU, why didn't they move to that?
@giislander
That's stupid. It's not like he want a PS3 for playing PS2. He wants a PS3 for playing PS3 AND PS2 games.
I own a 60GB PS3 since its launch, and i did buy some PS2 games i never played before, mostly RPG's. I dont care about the size of it, the electric bill, noise or linux, but i do care about a new hardware before the old one dies on me! For me thats more then enough reason to sell mine now and buy a new one, but IF and only IF i could play my PS2 games on it. Sony, you are losing my money and i spent $600 on you the first time... Give me my PS2 games and i would spend $300 in a heartbeat!!!
So, what Koller is saying is that we can expect PS2 compatibility in time for Christmas! Yea!
Nah. He's really saying it's not coming back.
It's gonna have to come back in some form if they want to sell PS2 games on the PSN store.
@AJ
I was merely making fun of the way Sony denies something within weeks of announcing it.
THAT would be awesome !!
That sucks. I really do hope the PS4 brings back the backwards compatibility. There are so many great games I want to go back and play, and I'd rather not have 4 systems hooked up, when I could just use 1. Heck, I'd even pay extra if they had some sort of Emotion Engine module you could install
if the ps3s are still selling then it won't ;)
were you just unlucky that you didn't get one at the time?
GLORIOUS 60GB PS3 MASTER RACE
Does anyone know if the slim PS3 will send bitstream so Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD will show in newer receivers?
You really need those little lights on your receiver lit, don't you?
Btw, no it's not going to handle audio any differently. There is no difference anyways besides the fact that the PS3 is handling the decoding instead of the receiver.
Back on topic, no surprise hearing this. Software emulation on the Motorstorm 80GB edition was no good anyways.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/21/ps3-slim-bitsreams-dolby-truehd-and-dts-hd-ma-audio-at-last/
just from how much power the PS3 uses compared to the PS2, i'll use my slim PS2 to play PS2 games.
and i have the original 60 gig backwards compatible PS3.
Ah, 180 watts. The new one consumes a mere 73.
Wasn't there a patent for a Ps2 emulator for the Ps3?
Yeah, (it's mentioned right at the beginning of the article) but apparently it doesn't mean anything according to Sony.
No. The was a patent for emulating the Emotion Engine (the PS2's CPU) via a cell processor. However this doesn't mean anything without a way to substitute the Graphics Synthesizer (the PS2's GPU) as well.
In fact the European 60GB and original 80GB models were already emulating the EE. But they still needed a physical version of the latter chip.
Everyone makes a big deal about BC before they buy a console but once you get one...you find out that you never play the old games.
I had a great stack of classic Xbox games like GTA 3 and Vice City..Halo etc but once i got the 360 they were relegated to the back of the cupboard.
Its funny how Sony keep stripping down the PS3..now its just a shadow of what it was back in 2006. No card readers, less usb, no dual HDMI, no backwards compat, no SACD compat. and no we have a slightly slimmer console that gives us that nasty matte finish and no chrome trim.
I still do. The best games of the MGS series are PS2 games, and also as there is no Ace Combat for PS3 yet, I'm left playing the old ones.
If the 360 Controller didn't suck so much, I would defect to Microsoft after all of this nonsense. My loyalty is gone.
I have the 80GB with BC and you are absolutely right. Besides putting "Bully" in it once just to see if it worked I never played a PS2 game on my PS3.
I play PS2 games on my launch model PS3 more often than I do games which were actually made for the system.
Perhaps BC is needed more on the PS3 than the 360 because the PS3 has such a tiny shit-tastic lineup of games....oo snap.
I as well still play the PS2. Only a handful of AAA titles on the PS3. Xbox 360 has more AAA titles... PS3 has ALOT of AAA titles. With the number of GREAT games for PS3, 360, PS2, PS1, Dreamcast etc, I honestly never buy a game that gets a rating below a 9. The rest I borrow from friends or rent once they are done. No money from me will be sent any companies way for a less than steller game.
Was that snapping sound one of your few remaining synapses breaking under the strain of concocting that feeble sass?
Yeah - I have to disagree here, too. Just because new games come out - that doesn't mean older games go down in quality and experience. I still go back and play plenty of last-generation stuff and later - God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Psi Ops, Omega Boost, Einhander, etc. Granted, they get less and less time -- but it's really nice not to have to pull out another system when there's just so much shelf space (even in my dedicated game room). I get that Sony is completely happy to keep charging for a standalone older unit that still sells, but I think they'd create more of a PS3 "culture" by keeping the backwards compatibility in place.
I think the PS3 and 360 game libraries are big enough now to not need BC. Sure you might want to play the odd final fantasy or GTA 3 but even then its unlikely when you have GTA4 or what have you. Not to mention that if you have PS2 games its quite likely you had a PS2 console unless you like looking at the boxes. You get pittance trading in or selling the console so just keep it.
The PS3 needs to dramatically cut costs to compete in rpice with the other consoles. Its obvious that nobody wanted a "premium" console.
The Wii on the other hand is different. Its library is terrible. I had to resort to buying Gamecube games. I think i played the Gamecube games more often than the Wii games. Try
Personally I agree. Being in my late twenties, I have a full time job, and I really only have the time and attention span to get involved with 1 game at a time, and each can last me at least a month, even PSN games. I've been through Mirrors Edge, Flower, inFamous, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2 (which I haven't finished) and World at War this year, and I haven't once considered that I need another game. I've got various PSN games too that I'll play when I want to experience some creativity. Only ONCE did I put a PS2 game in (I have the 60Gb original) and that was, as someone else has said they did too, Bully. Only to see if it made it look better (it was around the time Scholarship Edition came out for the 360), and I have never been bothered about BC. I actually offered to give a friend mine if they bought a new slim model but wanted the BC.
Of course, whilst PS2 hardware sales continue to really keep the Playstation division going, I doubt Sony are going to think about discontinuing it. They also mentioned numerous times before that they see the PS2s lifetime continuing for a while yet. Perhaps they could eventually start selling them like PSOne games via the PS Store, but I can't imagine I'll ever care.
Maybe you don't, but I still play GameCube, Xbox, and Playstation 2 games pretty regularly on my current gen systems. I know some people play a game once and move on, always looking for the next big thing, but when I buy a game I really love I revisit it regularly through the years. I think my time is usually pretty evenly split between 1/3 new games, 1/3 last gen, and 1/3 retro games.
Well if you have alot of old PS2 games, shouldnt you also have a PS2 you used to play them on? Besides the PS2 uses far less energy and emulation actually uses alot of the PS3s power.
eeee wrong, I still play PS1 games bub
Sony was one of the FIRST console manufacture to learn that Backward Compatibility sold more consoles than ones without the feature because loyalist tend to have the previously model and didn't want to loose use of older titles.
Considering what's possible with electronics today, there's no excuse not to include it unless you want to force your user base to play only PS3 and then sell you old PS1 titles on PSN which is what Sony is doing. There aren't enough games on the PS3 STILL that I want to play badly enough.
I currently play PRD2/3, GT4, DUB Edition Remix and doing GTA in order, finished GTA3 about 6 months ago.
I would still play those....even if I bought a PS3 Slim without that feature.
I mean we knew it was coming. PS2 compatibility got cut over iterations to shave costs and complexity. This thing has nothing in there from the PS2. No EE no GS and forget about software emulation and Sony bothering to do that for each title. Europe didn't even get a taste of hardware PS2 compatibility.
