Been holding off on that
PS3 Slim pre-order, waiting for Sony to tell you that this whole
PS2 backwards compatibility issue was just a big misunderstanding, and
of course Sony will keep trying its best to reintroduce PS2 compatibility into the PS3? Well, you might want to rethink that strategy, cowboy, because Amazon is warning of "shortages of this product across the US." It's already limiting Slim sales to one per person, and has a more lax five-Slims-per-person strategy in the UK. Meanwhile, Sony in Europe is saying not to worry, since it has "trucks and trailers" of the new console already on the road . We just don't know who to believe these days, but if you're not prepared to wait past September 1st for a crack at the Slim, you've got some deciding to do.

SONY NEEDS TO GET THOSE PS2 GAMES RUNNING ON THE PS3!!!
At least they don't lie in our faces by saying they can't.., because they obviously can..
SO JUST DO IT SONY!!! Or don't come knocking at my door for a ps4-sell...
PS3 is low ranked.
When I was told that the slim would support ps2 out of the box, I was ready to pre-order and did. Then, I was told that they wouldn't and don't care so I canceled the pre-order and bought a 360 and kept my ps2 slim.
Sony really f'd up this one.
I'm with you Kev. If it had ps2 backwards compatibility and even if it was, let's say $50 more, I would buy. But no dice.
Who told you that the PS3 Slim would have any backwards compatibility? And if you already have a PS2 Slim that works, why does it matter to you? Furthermore, why does the Xbox 360 all of a sudden become a more attractive option, just because the PS3 Slim doesn't have backwards compatibility? Nothing about this situation makes sense to me...
I traded in my PS2 for an XBOX360, so I am going to have to buy one again. I am one of the few that is holding out for BC in the PS3, so I guess I'll never get one.
The PS2 Slim is freakin' dirt cheap right now, i got one for £30 brand new from Tesco. Just get a PS3 and PS2 :P
You think Sony will really bother implementing PS2 compatibility for a few whining people? Fact is the vast majority of potential customers don't give a flying fuck about being able to play PS2 games, you're part of a small minority :)
Why did you trade it in first place if you still wanted to play PS2 games?
the truth is every smart person who wanted backwards compatibility sold their ps2 to buy the original ps3. if you wanted bc, then you should have bought in when that train was rolling, they saw that sales were stagnant for that feature while ps2's kept on trucking so they decided it was better to remove the hardware and go emulation, then they figured emulation isnt selling as much either so lets not put anymore money into making every game compatible with the emulation. Hence some savings in their pockets since they were losing money since day one on the system anyways.
The PS3 is still ugly whether it is slim or not... if it was not for the fact that it has a BluRay player, I would never even use the one I got for christmas, everything about it is a pain, downloads take FOREVER. There is just something about a firmware update taking 45 minutes that makes me hate this thing...
Let PS2 compatibility go people, bloody hell xD
I bought a PS2 Slim for £30 brand new from Tesco a few weeks back, the console is dirt cheap now :P Sure you don't have all 3 generations of Playstation games playable in one unit, but is it really a deal breaker, seriously?
Get a PS3 Slim and PS2 Slim, glue 'em together and be happy!
off topic: I get different ans depending on who I ask...how do I get my PS2 games(ATV...GTA...whatever)...to run on my PS3(and aspect correctly)...I have one of the original 60gb models
Hold the PS button and from there turn off "full screen" or something (been loooong time since I've played PS2 game on mine, so not sure about the exact wording).
Somehow this sounds like at an attempt to create a false sense of urgency to push uncertain consumers into pulling out their wallets. I doubt they'll lose sales over it if it's discovered to be true, but it's still a show of lack of confidence on someone's part. Why didn't Sony play along? Isn't it to their benefit?

There's a simple $99 add-on which will handle all backwards-compatibility issues on the ps3.
It's called a ps2. If you have any ps2 games and want to play them, either buy a ps2 or dig your old one out from the back of the closet.
Just what people want to do, throw more and more consoles out into their already-stuffed entertainment center, fiddle with connections and then play on an older console. The PS3 did enhance some of the PS2 games graphically (allowing HD for one thing) and also had the multi-tap enabled, wireless controllers, no need for memory cards...
Is it so much to ask to just include what they had BEFORE?
I agree with chuck completely.
When did backwards compatibility become a required feature? The Super Nintendo and N64 didn't have it. The Saturn and Dreamcast didn't have it. The Sega Genesis originally had backwards compatibility with the use of an adapter (called the Power Base Converter), but subsequent revisions eventually dropped it, kind of like what's happening with the PS3 right now. I thought it was pretty remarkable that the GameBoy series maintained backwards compatibility as long as it did.
You can easily find a working PS2 for less than $100. I bought a mint-condition used PS2 Slim for $50. You know what? It doesn't take up that much space. I'd gladly have both a PS3 Slim and a PS2 Slim in my entertainment center together -- they take up less combined space than the original PS3. Plus, I'm not forced to pay $400 or more for a console that has a costly feature that I don't want.
Low ranking Tom5304 won't make his prediction any less true. If you think this economy is going to sustainably rebound any time soon, I think you are delusional. Multi _Trillion_ (!!) dollar deficits (thanks Obama), Nationalized healthcare (thanks Obama), bankrupt Medicare (thanks Dems and GOP) and bankrupt Social Security program (thanks FDR for the world's largest Ponzi Scheme... Bernie Madoff got life in prison for a $50 billion scheme... the Federal Gov't's is $65+ Trillion - who can we send to jail for that?) Yeah, that's all very sustainable. I am however buying a ps3 slim :)
This is no place for political views. Keep it game-related. Many people would disagree with you. Especially people living in other countries.
I just wanted to let you know that one online retailer still has the PS3 Slim still in stock. You can find it on AllAmericanDirect.com: http://www.allamericandirect.com/sony-playstation-3-120gb-game-console-98017.html/?cid=400604.
