Engadget Podcast 160 - 08.21.2009

They said it couldn't be done: could these three men really repeat the on-air magic they conjured during last week's live show? The internet yelled a resounding "yes!" yesterday, as Josh, Paul and Nilay chatted up the PS3 Slim and all other manner of technological trivia. Your hosts' voices charged through internet air waves and filled the hearts of those who tuned in live with irreplaceable joy as podcast history was being made. Oh, you missed it? Don't worry, we've got a static copy of the broadcast right here. It's pretty good.
Hosts: Joshua Topolsky, Nilay Patel, Paul Miller
Producer: Trent Wolbe
Song: The Entertainer

No apple news for a change!!!! BTW I don't mind it!!!
Agreed, it was nice for a change especially with the flood of Apple related news that will be coming in September.
Invalid phone number.
you know... some of us commenters could use some podcast promotion, ya digg
"Ya know Sony, It's FREAKING SONY!"
lol
Canon G11 with HD video? Not according to Canon website or the howls of complaints over at dpreview forums...
Why was Nilay having an orgasm when Josh kept interrupting him? lol
For tech writers you guys are pretty ignorant about PS3. The console with most cutting edge technology. How can you guys feel qualified to put out those shoppers guides when most of you don't even own a machine with 20 some million owners? From now on I definitely won't be taking you guys' word for it.
We've all played with review units -- and beyond that, Paul and I both are gushing over finally buying one and you're still not happy with us? I felt like this was the most fanboyish podcast we've ever done.
Um... you're so excited about the 1080P on the Canon G11? Um... yeah ... it doesn't have that. It's VGA only. Not sure where you got that information, but it's clear in Canon's official specs: 640x480 30 fps - on both the G11 and S90. Major outrage has arisen from this on camera forums with people throwing out all sorts of wild accusations and conspiracy theories - not sure how you guys missed this. Maybe you were just using common sense and logically concluding that a camera in the G11s class would include HD video? Yeah, well, common sense doesn't apply here.
I am trying to listen to the podcast on Saturday morning, and I can't get it to start. I am on a Macbook Pro 15" (unibody) and have tried Safari and Firefox. Just fyi.
Just get it off iTunes instead of listening to it through this post
Joshua's favorite word and the word of this week's podcast: Curf
(hopefully spelled that right, you know what I mean!)
Great podcast as always, looking forward to whatever The Engadget Show is.
Nope: http://www.engadget.com/tag/kirf ;-)
Please keep doing these live!
Please keep doing these! :-)
But I think you could compress (the audio signal amplitude, not the audio data) the signal more. I listened to parts of the current episode in my car (yes, via bluetooth streaming from my iPhone) while driving at ~120kph on the Autobahn (it's a German word so it's gotta be capitalized ;)), and I really had to turn the stereo up way too loud in order to understand everything because there are huge differences between loud and soft "parts".
Otherwise, great stuff. Keep it up!
I just heard the guy commentating the F1 Grand Prix say the battle has been joined.
@Nilay:
I understand that you guys are liking it now that you have it. What I'm saying is that you guys put out those shopping guides yet 'till now you didn't have one of the three major consoles. You guys just did one for back to school where you recommended the X360. Imagine a publication like Consumer Reports recommending Ford Focus over Toyota Prius yet they never drove the Toyota Prius.
It just seems contrary to this website's other rules such as not keeping review units, not accepting paid travel, etc.
I see what you mean, but "never drove the Toyota Prius" seems like a bad example consider he's used it before. Maybe not having driven it for a sufficient length of time and on more than one type of surface. Meh, forget the analogies.
But I have used a PS3 quite a bit in the past, as has Paul. What we choose to spend our personal dollars on remains our decision alone, and until now neither Paul nor I felt the PS3 was worth the money.
Josh has always had one, as have several other members of our staff -- you know Ross Miller used to work for Joystiq, right? And until early this year most of the EHD staff considered the PS3 the best Blu-ray player out there.
And trust me, when we do those guides we talk a LOT about the choices.
What is a 'curf' ? I've heard this term on Engadget's podcast and other podcasts, never heard an explanation..something to do w/ cell phone prototypes?
nice music choice! ;)
Joshua sounds arrogant while speaks about some product, especially nokia and sony. it is making listening to podcast bit difficult. Any nokia and sony sells in millions and poeple are buying that
