MSI X-Slim X600 now fully official, available to order
This may seem a bit like old news considering how long the thing has been floating around, but MSI has only just now officially launched its X-Slim X600 ultrathin laptop in the US, and made it available at a number of online retailers including Newegg and Amazon. As expected, the laptop runs a fairly reasonable $899, and includes some pretty decent specs for that price (and its size), including a 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo processor, a 15.6-inch WXGA display, ATI HD 4330 graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a bundled external DVD drive, a standard six-cell battery and, of course, your choice of silver or black color options.

Where's the AMD version?
lol...because we know how great those turn out
Couldn't spring for a Core 2 duo?
I thought the same thing. Great specs until you get to Core2 SOLO? Nice try but PASS. Esp at the price point.
Guys...last time I'm going to say this.
This is a competitor to laptops such as the Macbook Air, Adamo and Lenovo x300.
It is very thin, very light and uses very little power. This is due to its Core 2 Solo, among other things.
It is much more affordable than previously mentioned laptops.
That is why people would buy it, not because it has a core 2 duo. That would make sense in a NORMAL laptop. NOT this one.
/end rant
You'd be better off with an Eee or its competitors. You'll probably come out with a lower weight and better battery life.
That gpu is pointless paired with the Core 2 Solo seeing as flash hd, like youtube, requires at least a Dual Core cpu at this point in time. Not to mention what ever games you can play decently with that gpu, the cpu will bottle neck it or something.
proof that flash is shit
dont know what your smoking
but i still got a socket 478 3 ghz intel celoron ruining window xp
that play flash and youtube just fine in fact i even watch hulu with no issues on it
my kids use a socket 775 single core 3 ghz intel celoron running ubuntu 9 .04 and all the do is watch your tube
are u sure u know what hell your talking about cuz i don't know any thing other them some high end games that even list needing a dual core cpu to run it
put the pipe down and do some research
my brother wife just bought an acer time with the same cpu as this and has yet complain about not being able running any thing in fact it a pretty snappy machine
I'm sorry Yoyo, but you're talking about something completely different than what AI is talking about. You're right, hulu and youtube can run on pretty much any modern cpus, but since youtube HD and hulu HD cannot be graphics card accelerated (since flash sucks) they tend to be terrible when it comes to HD content streaming over flash.
Basically, you're wrong.
if "Flash HD on youtube" different than clicking the "HD" button in youtube? cuz that works on my old x31 w/ a 1.6ghz Pentium M from around 2003/4
Basically i am not wrong because i watch hd video on both my single core machine
and yes i mean hulu and youtube in other words flash hd
what the fuck are u smoking to even think it cant
i dont know what hell u r basing this off from
realy post link give me a clue here toss bone out cus i even hook my kids computer that right in living to to tv every now then to play hd avi at full 1080p with no problems the kids have no trouble watching hd flash hd anything some pleases toss a link or something explaining to me y u think single core machine cant play hd flash really i like to know
I have a 5 year old Pentium M 1.86 ghz... single core... paired with only 1.25gigs of ram and it plays youtube HD flawlessly.
Just saying...
The processor and the price tag make me lose any interest. I can buy more powerful equivalent core 2 duo laptops for less.
What is the fastest the processor can be upgraded to?
1.4GHz single core...reasonable price???? WTH engadget. Laptops from 2 years ago are faster and cheaper.
But are they lighter?
nice looking laptop. I like how it's not full of stickers, some of these laptops look like they should be running in Nascar with the different stickers on them NVidia, Windows, Intel, etc.
I'm sure it will have plenty of stickers when you see it in person! I think these ultra slim laptops should have 14 inch screens... no need for anything bigger.
Well, well, well.... MSI is tricky.... Cuz, they know people in the US just look at design and selling price, therefore, they tweaked it.... copy-cat of Apple Air in terms of design language, and then lowered the price, by using cheap internal parts....
Oh, don't forget, there's a lot of paper tapes holding the cables and internal parts...
By the way, I know that so-called "six cells" are not always, cuz, the density of each cell, play another role... Therefore, watch carefully when buying a MSI
MSI.
Needs a new name and logo.
Something more catchy and appealing to the eye.
I'm talking to you too HTC.
Compared to Apple Macbook Air its not bad price.
you get more memory, more HD Space Ati 4330 and bundled with dvd drive you don't get that with macbook air base price.
wow. looking good. 1.4ghz culv it may have, 4gb of ram can't hurt
If I'm going to get something "slim", then I'm going for as inexpensive as possible (see:netbook). I'd much rather spend $900 on a VAIO or some equally slim laptop with Core 2 Duo and a 16.4" screen.
Would the vaio have the same battery life? I'm just curious. I'm in the market to buy a netbook / laptop, but Engadget doesn't help me much, because it keeps flashing a new cool laptop like every other day. :)
Will it come with the free windows 7 upgrade?
Hmm i've been seeing the x600 on newegg.ca for the past two weeks, not that i can say with certainty that i could actually buy it seeing how i dont have the money currently.
stick all that stuff in a 10" screen, same thickness, make it last >8 hours with wifi on streaming vids, and I'll pay $600 for it.
You realize that trying to fit the same performance into a smaller package tends to make it MORE expensive?
$900 is the MSRP. Its $800 at Amazon & Newegg
